A Freight Train Held Back by a Single Rubber Band

Is kind of how I feel when I pick up another awesome gun or utterly sick exotic armor, another glistening jot studding my sparkling, extravagant inventory and as "new" fades into a comfortable "mine" all I can think about is "64 spirit bloom." "128 relic iron" Ah, my mistake, Young Ahamkara's Spine isn't relic iron, so.. "192 helium filaments" I don't really mind long sidequests. I fried 200+ folk in the Crucible with nothing but my Wizard 77 as a hunter for Thorn's void-damage bounty. Used the same gun when it came time for the Nightfall kills for Pocket Infinity (Angry, no-burn, cabal, remember that week?) I thought it was kind of fun to handicap myself and still be expected to perform. But just walking around to hold square intermittently?... There's no other way to do it. No way that involves guns or being a guardian. I am not without suggestions: - Blues gives 1-3 materials of their native type when scrapped, upgrading engrams from the "nothing" vs. "purple" players mentally file them into - Give them in small amounts as strike rewards - Perhaps a purchasing option, with marks as currency Strange Coins and Ascendant Shards are the most potent currencies in the game, yet even the most casual players accrues them in minute amounts over time in whatever mode they choose to play. I grind my teeth and roll my eyes when I see thread about the Nightfall didn't drop a Gjallarhorn. I shake my head when I see complaints about 'broken PvP.' Materials are the only part of this game I can't defend. A telling fact, since they're also the only part of the game where you aren't actually playing. There is no. possible. way. programmed into the game to upgrade your gear except by walking up to static objects and holding square. I think we need just one more.

The material farming in this game is a hell of a lot quicker than any MMO I've played. Though in those you could buy them from other players. Said this before but maybe they could add a mission on each planet where we assault an enemy material stash. It would be against Cabal on Mars and Fallen everywhere else. Once inside our ghosts start transferring materials to our ships and we fight wave upon wave of enemies until we wipe. The amount of materials stolen goes up and up the more waves we survive. Would certainly be more fun than running around opening chests. Edit - Made my own thread for this one since it got some support: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/80304455/0/0

    • Another alternative would be nice... I've been stringing farming runs for basic resources with patrol bounties but aside from that there's nothing to be done about the rarer materials. Aside from raiding, but I'd prefer to be acquiring gear from that particular activity.

    • I disagree. I often walk up to inanimate objects over and over again and hold X. //Most fun I've had since pushing a hoop down the street with a stick.

    • An addendum: I don't think material farming should go away. Even in its current form I'm not sure I'd like to see it step down as the fastest way to gain materials. This is primarily because it keeps people returning to Patrol, which I find beneficial to the game for a number of reasons: 1. It keeps players mindful of their own progress on the power curve by surrounding them with peons and weak enemies 2. It provides an environment for organic player interaction 3. It keeps the world populated, and properly contextualizes the disconnected strikes. 4. It's a low pressure environment conducive to playing around with underleveled gear or unusual builds 5. In the future the possibility of scaling Patrol to your level could give rise to a more thoughtful use of the mission beacon mechanic. Someone has told me all I have to do to level up is run around in a circle and pick up the materials. This I know. The problem is that this all we -can- do.

      • Yeah, I think it's kinda stupid that no one in the Tower sells materials. The weaponsmith should sell those and weapon parts, just because it makes sense. Maybe something like 10-15 material for 1 strange coin or something.

      • +1 on this im a level 30 to be (27 until I level up and collect materials ) and flying around get mats is tedious as hell

      • I agree. I would honestly prefer a system where mats could drop from enemies. It would be a lot less obnoxious than walking in circles holding x while I ignore their potshots.

I kinda enjoy farming mats sometimes, except for relic iron. I hate that one. I usually do whatever local kill/collect missions that pop up too, for a little extra rep. Didn't they say they were adding some kind of materials vendor in TDB? As some others have said, it's easier than some other games. Taking weeks to get everything you need for a epic/legendary item. Then again, WoW hands out purpz like candy now.

        • Hopefully this would remedy the mats situation.. Every strike or crucible victory you get 2 mats of whatever planet the fight had taken place on. That way the farming isn't completely mind numbing but direct farming is still the superior way to get more of it in less time. It's only at most 14 mats in an hour compared to 60 or 70 in an hour, but it would make players a lot less burned out from the original method.

        • Bump I did a tally of total upgrade mats I need and for all the weapons and Armour I need like 500ish relic iron, 1000ish helium filaments, 300ish spirit bloom, and 200ish spin metal. And that's just for stuff that's got xp and is waiting for the mats.

        • As long as there are daily bounties, there won't be a huge push to get materials into quartermasters or whoever. It gives a second thing to do while patrolling an area. Do you know the farming runs? They are helpful. For me, spriit bloom and spinmetal are ubiquitous, I just grab some on patrol or while waiting for a public event. I rarely have less than 75. I sell those to the quartermasters for rank+marks regularly. The Archer's Line run for coils nets around 50 in maybe half an hour. The relic iron one on the Scablands seems the least fruitful. I hate relic iron.

            • I agree entirely, and I like your ideas and some posted below. They also said you would be able to replay missions for additional rewards... but that's not the case. Maybe give resources as rewards for replaying missions on each zone? I mean, they said it was a "shared-world shooter..." shouldn't they let us, you know, SHOOT stuff to earn our upgrades?

            • People like the way things are... I don't know what type of tumor they have lodged in their brain that makes them see this as fun content, but they like it... Gathering materials on this game is the most tedious P.O.S. system I've ever encountered... You basically run around in circles hoping to come across chests or pieces. Dumbest addition to any game, a desperate attempt to extend content by Bungie.

              • Or the fact that its the same mobs of pathetically outclassed enemies. Just to prove a point to a buddy I collected 100 helium filaments on the moon just by pacing back and forth, no sprint, no weapons, no jumping. Just a casual walk. Enemies of course light me up like a christmastree, never taking cover or sprinting I just casually strolled around the moon for 2 hours picking up stuff. Thats cheap lazy design hidden by distracting skyboxes and pretty graphics.
