The Darkness Explained.

After combing through the Grimoire, putting as much of it together that i could in a way that makes sense, i think this is best possible answer for the Darkness. Thoughts, Comments, mistakes you see that need to be corrected in later videos, or theories of your own. I'm fully aware this could be completely wrong as Bungie could decide to throw everything in the Grimoire out the window in turns of lore since they kind of already did that by putting it in the Grimoire in the first place.

  • That was great. Thanks for making putting it out there. It's incredibly how deep the story is in this game. Some sort of intergalactic Titanomachy between Ultimate AIs could definitely be at play. In Marathon one of the themes was how once the AIs gain a certain amount of power, they practically become gods and start worrying about such things as escaping the collapse of the universe itself. Balance between forces is an interesting concept - with entropy threatening to cool the universe until all energy has dissipated, and gravity threatening to pull it all together in a burning collapse. A few thoughts on the Black Garden: 1. As I type this I'm looking through the final gate towards the heart. First time I saw it I didn't look to close, thought it was literally just a beating heart suspended in space. On closer inspection though, it looks like an object that is folding in more than 3 dimensions. I remember once watching a science fiction show where hyper-dimensional objects appeared and that's sort of what they looked like. Just kind of constantly throbbing and folding in an inexplicable way. So anyway it lends to weight to the idea of a multiverse or alternative dimensions interfering with our reality. 2. In the Black Garden, if you look into the distance you see a sort of aliasing effect on the cliffs and rock foundations. A sort off ghosting of their borders. I think this represents a timeless view - you're seeing the rock at its most worn down, as well as where it started from. It would also suggest that the current point in time is in the distant future, when the rock is most worn down. Note also that time seems to be flowing backwards on this level, as you can see droplets of rain rise up out of puddles. 3. What is meant by 'the Black Garden?' What are the implications of a 'black garden' ... and also, on that Grimoire card, what is 'a red space before victory' ... what does that mean?? One last thing about the Darkness. I think thematically there's a strong connection to the 'dark ages' in history. I think Bungie want the game to echo that period in history where the Roman empire had fallen and its former citizens found their world overrun by outside empires and looked back to a golden age which they couldn't quite comprehend. If you read the writings of historians like Petrarch they talk about 'the darkness' that befell the golden age and how one day the light will come back to humanity.
