Suggestion: Melee Weapons, Melee Combat, Melee Introduction Lore

This sounds great, I really want melee weapons in

This is stupid, we don't need melee weapons!

Ok, so with the title being self explanatory, I'll just jump right in. Let me start by saying the Sword of Crota mission was one of my favorite parts of Destiny to date, and we can guess that since they took the time to set up melee animations and combat a reality, then they are probably giving its addition to the rest of the game a serious thought, and are probably gauging our reaction as a community before they make any decision. Most of us have run the mission, and you either loved it or hate it, but most everyone I know absolutely loved every second of it, as I do. But, even if Bungie were to consider adding melee combat to Destiny, there are several issues to that process, namely how to make it feel as real and forceful as the shooting combat, how to make it balanced so that it is on equal grounds with shooting, and finally how to fit the addition to the existing world of Destiny so that it flows with the rest of the lore and the overall story. Let's start with the lore so that we can understand how the weapons end up in our hands. During the Golden Age the people of Freehold researched all applications that the light had, from its effects on living organisms and inanimate objects, to treatment of diseases, and even how to create new elements. When the Darkness came, the scientists turned to a discovery that was thought to be unnecessary, but could might be useful to push back the Darkness: when steel is forged while bathing in the light of the Traveler, the light becomes infused into the very molecules of the metal. This strengthened the metal a thousand fold, making it almost indestructible, but light as air, leading the scientists to name this new material "Mythril". This discovery was shelved, however, because the Traveler had provided the knowledge to manufacture materials similar in strength which could be produced in far larger quantities and without the efforts needed to manufacture mythril. When the Darkness arrived it destroyed most of the things it saw as a threat, but the few light forges that were made had been shut off for so long that they were not seen as threats. The scientists of Freehold new that this material, indestructible and bathed in the light, could be used to fight the Darkness so they hid clues to the forges whereabouts and use so that one day they could be found and lit once more. Now only one survives, buried deep under the red sands of mars, waiting to forge fangs and claws to tear at the Darkness. Now that we have the lore set, let's get into how these weapons would work. First of, they would either be given their own equipment slot, or simply go in the heavy slot. When in use, the screen would go into 3rd person view, like when using the sword of Crota, you would have a light and heavy attack, and a weapon skill depending on the weapon, for example, some 2 handed swords, like Crota, as well as some other 2 handed weapons would have a shockwave attack, while some 1 handed swords would be able to send a slash of light through the air. There would be some kind of stamina system that would effect the strength of your attacks, so the longer you use a sword, the weaker the attacks get, and using a weapon's super sends it into cool down for a set amount of time, how long depends on the weapon. There would be different types of melee weapons to choose from, from daggers to short swords, 2 handed weapons like the Sword of Crota, and heavy melee weapons, like maces, battleaxes and hammers. And finally, the introduction of melee weapons. Melee Weapons would be introduced with an event, titled something akin to "A Forge Alight" I know it's cheesy. The event is started when the Speaker gives you a package to take to Banshee, upon delivery, Banshee informs you that it is an encrypted message referring to a lost forge of light on Mars, and sends you to the red planet to search for the rest of the message pieces. The Cabal have started to rip apart what is left of the computers in Freehold, so you must fight them and recover the message bits. Once you recover them all, Banshee sends you to Ikora to decipher it, only to find out you need the cipher. You return to Mars, in a special mission for the event, where your ghost searches a Cabal database to find out that a Cabal warlord has it as a trophy, so you have to kill him and take the cipher. Returning to Ikora, she retrieves the location data and activation codes for the Light Forge. When you go to the forge, the Cabal follow you, and you have to fight to claim the forge for the city. Afterwords, you're able to access a new choice on your starchart, the Last Forge, which is a small social area where you can turn in materials from spinmetal to ascendant shards, as well as motes of light, to forge your new tools of war. Well, that's my idea from a to z, if you like it please let me know, or if you think it's stupid, tell me why, I'm willing to consider outside opinions and alter the pitch if the issue is valid. For the sake of validity of the community's opinion, I made a poll, please cast your vote so Bungie can know how we feel about melee weapon content! Thank you for your time and I'll see you starside guardians.

  • how about just a melee only game type in the crucible? Though there could be no melee skill as warlock sunsingers would be too op.
