I'm confused. If matchmaking is added, then raids will be nerfed. This is a constant theme I've been seeing in a lot of posts. I just don't understand it. So if Bungie does not add matchmaking, then does that mean raids will not be nerfed? No. Also, I'm no expert at MMOs - although I have played quite a few - but can someone give me some examples where matchmaking has led to nerfed raids? Finally, I just want to point out that the OP has made a lot of absolute statements that just aren't true.

Raid finder in world of warcraft. The community was crying out for a raid finder. Since many people felt it was "unfair" or that only "elite" players will get to raid. They decided to make it a 25 man raid. Blizzard knew getting 25 random people to raid successfully was going to be hard. What did they do? They made it easier so the "casual" player could complete it. It completely ignored all raid mechanics needed for the regular raid. If you had 5 people who had no clue the other 20 could still carry them. The gear reward was also lesser for the raid finder content than the normal raid. So raid finder just became another obstacle in the way of raiding. Everyone turned raid finder into another step to gear up to do the regular raids. So compared to destiny it would be like saying Currently you run strikes to get geared up. Then you tackle raids. What raid finder did was Now you run strikes to get gear. Then MM raid. Then you raided. So in all actually you made the gap even further. I know I know. This is not wow it wasn't 25 people its only 6. All I'm pointing out is its easy to make the transition. Putting 6 or 25 random people together and get them to work as a group will be difficult. So either its too hard and peole more often than not will fail. Or you tone it down so they can more often complete it. I'm in no way saying a group of 6 random people can not complete a raid. I'm merley stating that the completion success rate would on average not be very high. I would imagine most people that want MM want the epic gear the raid gives. So if a large portion of people hop in a MM raid and don't get that epic loot they want they will be back on the forums needing a "nerf" cause they still can't get what they want.

  • I see. So when they made all the changes, did they nerf all the raids or just the ones in raid finder?

  • If you spend 5 minutes in the General Discussion World of Warcraft forums (which I did just a little bit ago to do some research into the effects of MM after no MM was possible), you'll see the general disdain for Looking for Raid mechanic. They call it easy mode. Where people go and if they can't beat it, they complain until Blizzard nerfs it into easy mode. That raiding seems "hollow" and their accomplishments diminished due to LFR being added.

The raid finder one was the easier of the raids. It was still the same boss fights and things like that. However you could pretty much ignore all those mechanics, stand in one place and burn down the boss. The 10 and 25 regular raids were not so. There was coordination between the 2 tanks. Each healer had a separate responsibility and people to heal. Typically there was also things the dps had to look out for. Such as don't stand in fire. Swap targets to a new target. Run out of the raid group if you had a certain de buff. I'm not saying destiny will be like that. There clearly are not the same rolls tank/healer/dps that fill wow. Then on top of the normal raid there was an even higher difficulty called heroic. Where bosses did even different abilities. This is just one example in the many games that have had a form of raid content. I heard stories from a friend of mine about early ever quest raids. They made wow raids sound like a walk in the park. What it all boils down to is this. In a raid environment typically if 1 person screws up everyone dies. It's not like a strike where if someone didn't know to shoot the legs the other 2 people could make up for it. There were enrage timers. Where if you didn't kill the boss in a certain amount of time it wiped the party. So if your best damage dealer died the group could hit the enrage timer and all die. This is why some of us believe MM is doomed to fail. It's possible that destiny will make puzzles to solve that need all 6 members to click certain buttons. Maybe a door closes you all in a room. If someone's not paying attention and didn't make it to the room? You all can't do the puzzle, die and try again. This is not to discourage players from trying. Just simply stating for a lot of people might not know what a raid is. Yet a lot of people are saying it's unfair there is no MM. If you don't know what your going to get yourself into how can you know it's unfair you can't do it?

you can't really nerf one and not the other. A puzzle is a puzzle, you can't make it any easier. The hard thing about raids is not how much damage enemies do, it's controlling all of the factors and thinking through puzzles. Those things can't really be nerfed in one because it would completely change how the raid works.
