next gen is really...quiet?

Ever since Got my xbox one, I knew I'd have to make friends because none of mine got one. Eight months later, I haven't really heard anything except the occasional angry titan fall player. Coming into the destiny beta, I had a deja vu moment of saying to myself, "now I can finally meet some people." Well, after a few hours in the tower hearing only metaphorical crickets I realized, next gen is really quiet. I've played bungie games since I got my xbox, and those games facilitated some of the best social moments I've had on video games. Whether it was joining random custom game lobbies and having a blast, making a friend in a CTF match by flying each other in a hornet, or feeling the burn in my index finger from holding down the trigger to complete the six hour long vidmaster achievements. I cherish these memories and have been excited at the opportunity to make new ones in Destiny. However I can't do that if every guardian I meet is as talkative as a statue due to 'enhancing' my destiny experience. I think it's great that you (bungie) are taking destiny super seriously as it will end up being a great game. On the other hand your pushing the envelope. I don't want my destiny experience to be solo. I want to have an experience with someone and then hang with them. Thats what I loved about halo, was the fact it brought people together. If your touring this as a social game, without chat its far from that. How is a guardian going to say "wow how did you get that sick gear." Message me? If thats the sociability your striving for, quite honestly it sucks. I really want to have amazing moments in this game with new friends. Simple solution: implement chat in atleast the tower, with the options via the pull up menu to selectively mute or mute all. in game chat is essential to making this a social game and making those special bungie moments into friendships Otherwise destiny is great Edit: After the beta I joined a clan because I knew I would want people to play with. So I'll have people to play with, but the point of this post was to express my dismay at the silence

  • I played for many hours on the Xbox one. Even got several invites from random people in the tower. Part of the reason it was so quiet is because there is no chat unless your in a fire team. That promotes lone wolf behavior, not social behavior. I too understand the problem with switching to next gen. I still have 40 or so friends on 360 and only 5-10 who have switched to the Xbox one.

  • That's because you have an xbox one and they are being outsold 3 to 1 by the ps4 or really close to that.

    • I do think that them touting the game as being social, then removing the main element in being social (being able to talk to others), was a bit foolish. I think having the ability to speak to others is kind of fundamental, especially in a "social" game. As it stands running across other people is no different to running across more boring versions of NPCs in other games. Removing voice chat because of a small portion of the community who get on to attempt to troll, or play their awful music full volume through a mic is stupid, thats what mute is for. By doing so they limit your ability to make friends to the forum or clan/group system, which you have to take yourself away from the game to use, so the sense of immersion is completely gone at that point. It also doesnt mean you are going to run into like minded people in the clan/group anyway and you have just invested a bunch of time away from the game for nothing. I'd much rather deal with a few idiots that i have to mute and have the option to talk to the people i wanted rather than be able to talk to nobody and be herded onto a forum/chat/clan for the purpose of doing the same thing. Also, just being able to speak to people in strikes etc means you could help randoms that join your matches if they arent as knowledgeable (eg. crit spots on strike bosses etc or make them aware of loot chests and things like that in the vicinity), and having the ability even just to talk about stupid little things to one another will make the game seem more lively, lets be honest, do you go out and ever just never speak a word to anyone you run into in public? All in all i think removing voice chat just distances the community from each other, which is foolish seeing as they tout it as the be all end all social MMO/FPS hybrid.

Yes this game needs much MUCH better in-game communication. Its so important I cant believe how big an oversight it is. They took many features from mmorpgs for this game but not the ability to easily chat with anyone you want with a variety of different ways? whats up with that?

        • Most people are in a live party (i typically am in a live party when I play games mostly). I think pretty much both consoles are pretty quiet and most people are watching netflix and doing other things on their consoles besides gaming because the market is still in a little rut for games. To be honest I think both consoles were released a year early because with all the power of both consoles, the game developers were not ready for it yet and games probably got pushed back because those really good ideas that got scrapped can now be implemented. Big games are coming soon. I know I am excited

          • In other game lobbies I was bombarded with noise. Everyone talking at once saying nothing, children singing, dogs barking, someone's girlfriend, wife, or mom saying get off the game, and me occasionally getting called the N-word. The silence of Destiny is soothing. Let it absorb your sorrows... Forever.

Ugh dude, I feel it. I remember back in Halo 3 when I would literally all day just search my recently-played-with list for people in joinable custom games lobbies. And that was normal! 16 random would play Fat Man or Duck Hunt and it was something a lot of people did. I didn't get that same experience out of Reach, and I think that's mostly because XBL parties were invented, detaching people from in-game comms.

              • Unfortunately this new gen has no good games until 9/9/14 and from that moment on we should see a pick up in the release of games but if you think xbone is bad ps4 has absolutely nothing in stuck playing pinball

                • Never been a big fan of proximity chat, People just walk up to you and start rambling on about there S*x life's with you're mum, Saying F*** every two seconds and calling you mean words .. It's the reason people don't talk in game chat much any more. There are just way to many bullies & Mean people out there ruining the experience. Oh and don't forget those 14-16 year old Teens (Like myself) who think there top doge and swear 24/7 while there broken microphone crackles and buzzes so loudly you go deaf.

                • I think it is actually way more interactive and easy to meet people in destiny like if you dance somewhere a bunch of people will dance with you it's really cool how we can have that level of interaction without saying a single word. Though I still think it would be better if we had open chat in the tower even if you had to push a button to talk.

                • my first strike neither of the people had a mic, but we did pretty good on the strike. Most players are jaded by other games chat systems. So they don't bother with chat. If people would get their head out of the rear end and be more mature when talking and stop the annoying crap. then maybe people will use chat again. That is the number 1 reason most don't want proximity chat. Gamers can be extremely immature no matter the age.

                • I feel a proximity chat in the tower could resolve everyone problems... Or even installed in the tower and in the game world... Regardless, they need a chat system of some kind. Even a chat box like most all other MMOs. This is something that will bring the community closer together, even if it means the risk of a few foul mouthed players. It's needed period. As this is how players band together, by being able to communicate. Especially if there not allowing raids to have a match making feature.

                • The fun part would be finding people here on the forums. Many have actually pointed out that this would be an easy way to find people for fireteams, raids, and strikes. As far as finding people in world, yeah, it's absolutely terrible. However, that doesn't mean you can't find friends. Having a good matchmade strike will probably boost your chances, but speaking with others might not be a go-to. Honestly, if you want a somewhat talkative team mate on the Xbone, add me. Why the hell not, right? Gt is the same as the username. Also, for Titanfall, I never really got the point of trash talking there. Only your team mates can hear you and it kind of defeats the purpose. That, and most trash talk can be replaced with "Xbox, record that!"

                • This all started with party chat. Everyone in Halo 3 had a mic and we all had fun with each other. Oh those times were fun. When party chat came along, everyone became secluded. THe only games that didn't become secluded was Call of Duty when some playlists couldn't allow party chat. I think we need proximity chat with destiny. Include an option to disable it for all player, or to just leave it on fire team members or friends.
