This event was never going to be special, or particularly rewarding. If they did so, there would be fallout over people being unable to participate and collect such rewards.
The event is a server capacity test under the phrase event. They threw the community a piece of unseen content and a badge, in order to get you in the doors. The actual purpose is pushing the server to capacity, so they can see what those numbers are, and work to prevent and fix such issues in the future.
So yes, the event was scarce.
Yes, it is open beta for the 'special event' as it maximizes numbers.
Yes, lots of you cant get online (or stay online).
Yes, your complaints are all totally missing the point.
Provided they learn what they wanted from this, we will hopefully see less issues on full release (But then again, we probably will still see them, as the numbers participating in a beta are likely to be nothing against the full product.)

I work with QA for a living, so I had guessed as much :). I, for one, think it's a great incentive for luring people online. I do admire the execution, though - most people would've thrown out a message asking people to join in, but this works MUCH better. I hope we get some statistics on how people have attended the beta.. Average hrs played, class division ratios, average hours exploring vs strike vs pvp and all that.
