So yesterday I thought about a way to increase the emotes from 4 to 16 and the post got really high on Reddit. Today I made a simple infographic with some UI ideas for this advanced emote system.
I'm not saying is the best, only way to enhance communication on Destiny... it's just my small contribution on this topic, because we definitely need more communication. ;)
Types of emotes
We're going to need at least 2/3 different typologies of emotes:
1. Long animations in third person view, viewable by the player (like the current ones).
2. Short animations in first person, viewable by the player, with audio cues (similar to the one in Battlefield when you spot someone and you see your hand pointing).
3. No animations viewable by the player (only the other players can see your gesture), audio feedback.
Actually 2/3 could be the same type.
Basically, type 1 actions are intended to be used in low danger situations, for entertainment, while type 2/3 are more tactic and don't require switching to third person view.
Note: I'm not saying, in any way, that this should replace voice chat.
Last Edit: I believe it's already too late for Bungie to implement a feature like this (or a commo rose) but the message for Bungie is very clear: people WANT more ways to communicate with other guardians. We want an easier way to voice chat with friends and also more emotes to interact with strangers.
It wouldn't be that impossible for Bungie to work on these features and add them to a future DLC (2015?).
Please Bungie, consider this topic!
As a compromise, a first step could be add (as many people commented) a simple 8 emotes system, adding a double tap + direction on top of the system in place right now. Double tapping the dpad is definitely not that weird

Saw this on Reddit, and I completely support the "more emotes" movement :)

Wow, I like this, Bump !

Great Idea!

Excellent point and excellent infographic! Good thoughts on how to use a double press system for the extra emotes as well. I'll add that none of the current emotes are at all urgent except possibly "point" and therefore the time it takes to press a button twice won't mean the difference between life and death to begin with. Hopefully Bungie will be able to incorporate these ideas, even if they won't be in the full release immediately.

Edited by WILL NPC FOR XP: 7/24/2014 3:31:30 PM+100 This is especially great for people who are just playing a quick match before work or do not feel like getting out a headset. I for one could have really used that "LOOT HERE" option a few times already. Also I'm just wondering if anyone has actually tried to point at loot in the game and if the screen said you did point at some loot. More people need to look at this article.

Very nice

This is a fantastic idea!!

That's an awesome idea and amazing example in the photo.

Thought I would include the link to the reddit post since I just found it. I made a topic yesterday about a commo-rose. I do think yours is an elegant solution, especially after seeing it visualized. However, I think a commo-rose idea could still work. I believe in Battlefield you hold R1 (the spotting button) on PS4 - for Destiny it could work equally well if you held UP on the D-PAD.

Edited by HankTheYank27: 7/24/2014 5:19:44 PMLove the idea, but it does sound a bit tricky. Not something you could do quickly without memorizing them all. I do want more emotes though. Would love to see customizable emotes like different dance styles, or badass salutes, etc. Also, I think a Hunter would look badass sitting cross legged Indian style!

Edited by Seven: 7/24/2014 6:08:48 PMI really like the idea of a Battlefield-esque hold-down menu. And maybe I'm biased but I'd also really like to see included text chat with spam filter or something.

It's a cool idea i honestly just want more emotes, especially dance moves... the funnier the dance move the harder it should be to get... basically i want to do an exagerrageted continuous pelvic thrust when killing a difficult boss or owning someone in pvp haha!

Awesome idea and great visuals ! Thanks

Simple and intuitive. I like it.

Yes! Want! I would love to be able to tell my team which fallen walker leg to focus on!

This is a fantastic idea. This would make it much easier to communicate with people not in your fireteam or party. It's very easy to understand and adds a layer of depth to the game, almost as if it's the unspoken language of the Guardians. I support it.
-
Highly agree!!! It allows for players without a mic or anything of that nature to have basic communication. Essential to anyone playing the game.

Yesssss

You put a lot a work into this I agree +1

Edited by Valrix: 7/24/2014 8:51:47 PMExcellent post, I agree Chat Wheel (like BF4) would be faster and I think someone could manage holding R3 down and navigate the wheel with the Left stick.

Edited by Dino: 7/24/2014 10:00:17 PMI'll throw in my 2 cents and support for more emotes. Could easily increase the amount available with button combos, holding down R1, R2, L1, or L2 while pressing a direction on the d-pad gives 4 new emotes for each cardinal direction on the pad. (If I remember right, that is how they are done on Final Fantasy XI on the PS4.) Gives you 20 emotes that are instantly available without having to dive into a menu at all. If you want to get really into it, you could have page in the settings menu with a larger list of emotes that allow you to map which emotes you want to the button combo.

Just make it like BF4's wheel.
