So my parents are helping me buy a laptop since I'm about to go off to college and also because our desktop isn't fast enough for the photoshop editing that I do, AND because I'm the only one in the family without a laptop. So I was looking at some laptops and it appears to me that the Alienware M18x R2 is the best deal I can find for my needs. It's plenty fast for what I need it, it can game like no other, and it has the best benchmarking scores of any laptop I've seen. I will buy it refurbished likely around $1800, and it will come with DDR4 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, quad i7 3740QM processor clocked at 3.7GHz (once I'm done with it hehe), and dual 2GB HD 7970M graphics cards. It's also upgradable which is nice, although being unfamiliar with gaming laptops, I don't know if this is standard nowadays because I know a lot of laptops aren't really upgradable.
I just wanted your opinion if this is a good deal or not. I know a lot of people hate Alienware (I'm usually one of those people as well but with laptops, it's different), and I would NEVER buy an Alienware desktop because I'm no stranger to custom PC builds, but gaming laptops such as this are completely new to me. So please just give me some input.
Only two options, you think I should get it, or you think I should get something else.

You can get another laptop just as good for half the price lol

Edited by Gatsby: 6/21/2014 5:47:19 PMI had one and returned it within a couple of days. Way too heavy and the battery ran out too quickly. Carrying that and all my textbooks is impossible. I'm looking into getting an MSI GS70, it's super thin and light, and it has a great GPU. www.amazon.com/MSI-Series-GS70-STEALTH-037-17-3-Inch/dp/B00JKCHRXC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403372789&sr=8-1&keywords=MSI+gs70

Don't do it For college you'll need portability and battery Alienware offers none of that Just because the specs look good on paper doesn't mean that it'll mean your needs Honestly for a college student I'd recommend the Samsung Series 7 Chronos or Ativ Book 8 (They're the same thing) Quad core i7 2.4 Ghz 1920x1080p AMD Radeon 8870m 5 pounds 7 hour battery life 8 GB RAM (12 max) It's portable and it's powerful enough to handle your programs and games It's around $1500 Look it up It's a great laptop Here's a detailed review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Samsung-Series-7-Chronos-770Z5E-S01DE-Notebook.91341.0.html

Edited by Recon Number 54: 6/21/2014 5:28:53 AMA gaming laptop is probably not the best thing for school. Most of them are very large and heavy. Carrying around that sort of weight sucks.

I have one! :D

Dual NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB graphics cards, with the second one being in an ultrabay. Just saying... you can get near enough to the same thing for much, much cheaper. People say not to buy them because they are massively overpriced, and you're spending hundreds of extra dollars for the brand and the pretty lights.
