This is a feature that many other forums have, and I think it'd be pretty useful t have on B.net. It'd make it easier to give people credit in a thread, specify who first said something in a quote, etc.. It wouldn't be that difficult to implement (at least, I don't think it would be. My knowledge of web coding is minimal), and it could work pretty simply from a user-standpoint.
For example, if I wanted to tag a user I could simply place an "@" symbol before their name. This tag would automatically turn the name into a link to that person's account, and they would receive a notification that they were tagged.
As an example here's how it would look while I'm composing a thread/reply:
Do you remember @Crossbone's last thread?
and it would come out like this:
Do you remember Crossbone's last thread?
In addition to the automatic reformatting, the tagged user (myself, in this scenario) would receive a notification.
Anyway, would this be a possible feature to implement? Again, my knowledge on webcoding is pretty minimal, but this doesn't really seem like an incredibly difficult thing to add.

Edited by Ghost 0f Dawn: 4/28/2014 7:46:41 PMITT OP wants twitter.

Edited by SuperSmeller: 4/28/2014 4:11:05 AMthe only problem i can see with that method is that there can be multiple users with the @Crossbone display name. you'd have to "tag" a specific unique id, which often isn't the user's display name. i would like such a feature, though.

What I'm curious about is how it should handle a situation where a large number of users are mentioned. Obviously if it's just the one username being repeated like above it's pretty simple to just fire off one notification, but what if I start mentioning @a, @b, and @c? What if I mention @a...@z? How might this affect the performance of the system? We can't really answer that, but it is a relevant question nonetheless. However, setting aside performance reasons for a moment, should such a thing be possible - to "spam mentions" so to speak? If no, the reasonable thing to do is to of course put a limit the number of possible mentions that can occur, say five (@a, @b, @c, @d, and @e), but, to me, that doesn't seem very intuitive to a user if they are legitimately mentioning a number of people only to be held back by a single mention of @f; you want their mentions to register, but at the same time, you probably want to prevent abuse of the feature. The feature works well on other networks like the StackExchange sites, but that's because of the way it's implemented. IIRC, a "mention" will only register if it is placed within the first five or so characters of a post, and you can only do it once. However, that's due to the lack of structure of the comments system they have - it's not a forum, only a comment to the response/answer. This site has more than one instance of feedback between users - it is a forum after all - so addressing each reply to the person you're responding to is superfluous when the site already does that for you. What I don't think really has been addressed yet is the motivation for it being implemented, and as much as I'd like to see it here, I too am at a loss to give an adequate justification for its existence.

I like it. BTW: add #FeatureRequest.

Not a bad idea. I like that said person would get a notification.
