Community, gather around. Let's talk it out.

So as many of you are aware today has been a rough day in the community: our beloved Marty the Elder has officially been dismissed by Bungie. This was shocking news to all of us and I can assume that no one here saw this coming. Indeed, this is a massive disappointment and we can all agree that it hurts us. Marty's fantastic scores made Halo a huge part of what it is and I they will forever be burnt into my memory. Whoever fills his position at Bungie will never be able to fill his shoes, and I think we all wish him the best on his journey. He is the best composer in the industry and he will find work quickly. Having said all of that, many of you have failed to handle this bad news the proper way. I have seen many of you lashing out at Bungie with threats to cancel pre-orders and boycott them. Worse than that, I have seen too many people insulting DeeJ. Let's address the situation with Bungie first. Saying you're going to boycott Bungie isn't really a rational thing to do; we cannot blame the company we love for the actions of a select few. Secondly, do not blame the messenger. As the community manager DeeJ's responsibility is to inform us of the happenings at Bungie, and although we received little to no information on why Marty was let go we should consider ourselves lucky that Bungie even allowed DeeJ to release a statement at all. DeeJ is a good man, a great community manager, and most importantly he doubtfully had anything to do with Marty to being fired. So back off of him. All I ask of you all, and man this is a huge request on an internet forum, is that you think rationally about this situation and instead of sending Bungie or DeeJ all your hate send Marty all your love and wish him luck on whatever he plans to work on next. I have my flame suit on so if you're still feeling like you're full of hate, feel free to take it out on me. Just let it all out so we can move forward.

It's not about how we handled the situation badly, it's how bungie handled it poorly.
Maybe Marty handled it poorly, though we won't know unless we get one of them to say something.
• I'm taking out my hate on you. Thank you. Well, maybe they will hire Marty for future projects? That would be really nice and Marty should have more freedom this way.

While it's unfortunate to hear that O'Donnald lost his job, I don't care. M. Salvatori is still there. I hope he'll continue development on 'Music of the Spheres'.

    • Agreed that throwing any threats of any shape and size at DeeJ, or anyone at Bungie not involved in the situation is a major no-no. The only thing I do want to say, regarding pre-purchases, is that it is up to the buyer to purchase anything from Bungie. It is their right as patrons, and their money can be spent however they wish, and dissuading someone doesn't necessarily alleviate all situations (sometimes it ends up aggravating it). It is like voting for a politician: If the politician says one thing that the voter likes, but is seen doing either the opposite or some other suspicious deed, it is the voters right to not elect/re-elect that person (Point is: it's the individuals vote, compared to the individual's money). It is not their right, however, to threaten to do so. It simply happens or it doesn't. Anything in-between that is childish. So, I'm with you on all points except where another person's money is concerned, because it simply is no one else's concern except for the individual (and chances are they may buy it later when they see their friends/classmates/etc. talking about it).

I like you, chorizzo. Always have, and most likely always will respect the hell out of you. And I've always tried to keep a level head around here. Even as decisions were made that I really disliked, I kept my head up and encouraged others to do the same. For the last year since the site update, I've tried like hell to influence the positive change I wanted to see. I've asked people to "just hold on a little bit longer" when they talked about leaving. I've asked folks to give rational arguments instead of spiteful rants. But it's getting damn hard now, dude. This isn't so much about Marty for me. Loved the guy's music. Hate to see him go. But, for me, it's becoming a bit of a circus around here. We're seeing more and more of what kept us here for the last X amount of years slipping away with little more than a "Just keep waiting.. trust us" promise provided by staff. Transparency is nearly nonexistent around here. Just cryptic one-liners that are intended to give us hope of what's to come and as of yet, unfulfilled promises. I bet I'm not alone in this, and Marty is just another straw upon the camel's back. Though it's fun to sit around and say "things were better back in..", I've never really believed all that. This place was always what it was. But now.. now I don't know. Perhaps it's just me, but I'm noticing a disconnect between Bungie and the community in a manner that I haven't seen before. I saw a long time member basically accused of "bringing it upon himself" when someone began to threaten his family. I've seen more than a year of dead groups and main boards filled with mocking trolls as they get banned and make a thread laughing about it 5mins later. And yesterday, I see possibly the most loved and respected member of the Bungie staff fired for an as of yet undisclosed reason, with a send off that had all the sincerity of a forced apology. And here we are, a day later, still not knowing a damn thing. Bungie knew the hell-storm this would cause. And yet they were completely unprepared, or indifferent enough toward the community, to have an appropriate response. I think, as usual, the community is frustrated with something and we simply don't know (or even attempt to find) the best way to vent it. It's easier to make quick posts bashing everyone involved and making whatever threat they can in order to hopefully have their voices heard. It's not productive. And as is apparent, it's not very effective either. But I feel the frustration is just, none the less. DeeJ's role as community manager (Among many others, I'm sure) is to keep the masses quelled. It's also to listen to us as we whine like entitled brats about our displeasure. So in that regard.. I don't have sympathy for what he's dealing with. That's why he makes the big bucks. And the last year could have been handled so much better. Bnet is my internet home. And I'll be with it for better or worse, now and into the future. But damn, this sure seems like an extended "worse" period. The kids are getting restless.

            • My honest opinion: I think Bungie has grown too big for it's own good. They used to be a lovable tight-knit community of awesome developers, but now they're so corporate, and so many elders have left. I just watched Jobs the other night and it was kind of a sad movie, because once Apple grew to a certain point, Steve Jobs had almost no control over his own business anymore, he couldn't do the things he dreamed of doing anymore and they ended up taking his company away from him. That's how I view Bungie now; they've grown and lost control of their own company. I'm sure the employees still care deeply about what they do, but ultimately, the ones in control have lost Bungie's vision.

            • http://destiny.bungie.org/files/marty-after-bungie/ Marty still has part ownership in Bugie. So by boycotting Bungie or Destiny we hurt Marty himself. He says he wants Bungie and the team to do great. So why on earth would ANYONE boycott ANYTHING to do with Bungie or Destiny??????

              • Great piece. Its because of people like you that im going to put my whole social gaming experiences into Bungie community (even though I have no friends here or on PS4 to play Destiny with, if you've got the beta and a PS4, hit me up ill be more then happy to play and chat!: MunsterJB1235) Aaaaaaanywayyyy, I think their was more to it then just throwing him down the drain. He's been with them through the good and bad. And hearing people diss one of the best and most likable companies in the world is really disappointing, Ye should think on the bright side, what happens if they get Thomas Bergersen, a person so good at composing he is known throughout the world as "The emperor of epic". That would keep me more then happy. What I am saying is it is tragic that such a brilliant talent lost his job, but its far from over for him, and that maybe a legend may replace a legend. Music is a big part of a Space Opera esc. game, but it isn't so important that ye need to cancel a pre-order to this motha-chuffing game. (MoreConsole Quote) Regards, One passionate Bungie fella

This latest trend is troubling, and I was more than a little upset when I heard the news. We can only imagine what is going on behind closed doors. One can only guess what kinds of corporate decision making has forced Joseph Staten and now Marty out the door. This was the place to be. The transparency, the involvement we've shared in the design process, the capacity to give feedback, to be heard, I mean Bungie is largely responsible for my interest in design. It's just this trend casts serious doubt on what this company is all about. What kind of good reason that's in the interest of seeing these games we all share and love becoming all they can be, could there be for this turn of events. I mean that was what the split from M$ was all about. Sticking it to the man like old times in their early days and daring to do something great that's not hollow and motivated by corporate greed. There have been ideals shared here that has a great deal to do with my faith in this Dev. I've been the one pushing Destiny on my friends because I've believed in this studio and what it's capable of. But is it now losing its heart and soul? We all knew that the userbase on this site would continue to dissolve and grow at the same time. We all knew the age range and maturity and topics of discussion would begin to resemble the rest of the net. But Bungie was always going to be Bungie even if they were forced to take a different approach to their community outreach. As long as Bungie was Bungie, there would still be a reason to keep coming back here year after year. Change is slow, change is subtle, and now I fear it is beginning to resemble something else. Keep it real, Bungie. That's all we ask. Don't lose yourself in the politics of the big world and forget where you came from. It's been a good ten years, let's make it 20.

                    • It's a shock, but I am sure there are logical reasons behind this. Even though I deeply enjoy Marty's scores, Maybe there was a different direction which both Bungie and Marty wanted to take. Eventually we have to say goodbye to one another, just when it happens, it becomes a tornado of emotions. I too feel what you are saying Chorizzo. Marty4Music. May he have a wonderous journey.

                      • I'm not one to rage on the forums about things, but it is a little concerning to me that there has literally been no explanation as to why from Bungie. It's disrespectful to the fans who are wondering what happened. Until they give a reason(that isn't a canned response that doesn't even coincide with Marty's statement) then I believe the community has a reason to be upset and to vent their frustration. It worries me that something like this came up this close to launch. Even if he was fired unjustly I feel that they need to at least address it to the community. It seems to me that a few people didn't understand the shit they were going to stir up in the community that they don't seem to care about anymore. I don't believe that I'm alone when I say that I feel betrayed for what is a loss of someone I looked up to. I've always liked Bungie for their community involvement and the passion they seemed to put into each and every single game they made. This is making me rethink my love for the company as a whole. Whether or not my pre-order for Destiny gets cancelled or not remains to be seen, but I will likely cancel if we do not hear back from Bungie regarding this matter.

My Two cents... Having known family and friends who've worked in the industry as well as having worked in the industry myself I cannot throw hate like so many have about this topic. He was iconic, this is true. But I myself will not go on the hate bandwagon for what was done. No one knows the full reasons why it happened except for those at Bungie and the only thing we know for sure is that he was let go due to a conflict of interest. I just find it ignorant to judge the company based on what little is known and only basing it all on nostalgic reasons because we grew up on Halo. And while it makes no difference to the fans who feel so hurt. I am glad he was with Bungie for so long and now he can go and do things on his own and make music for other projects and personally I really don't think he should go to 343 just to keep doing Halo music, I feel he should go above and beyond to some new franchise. Even if he's gone from Bungie there are still others with them that are just as amazing and IMO on the current project, Destiny, Paul McCartney is one hell of a musician to be still working on the project. EDIT: Not to mention... Bungie still has Mike Salvatori, why are people forgetting him, Marty wasn't alone to compose the Halo scores.

                        • My thoughts exactly. Just get ready for Bungie to throw out lots of Destiny info to cover up the fact that Marty was fired. That's how they handle these things, replace whatever doubt you have with "oh look! new Destiny images!" "Beta release date!"...
