Why I think Reach's space combat was practice for Destiny.

Edit: I forgot about the concept art showcasing a cockpit of one of the fighters. This more or less showcases what the space combat would look like up close. Thanks to Obadiah II for the link. Bungie probably used Reach as a guinea pig to test out the cut scenes with our customizable armor as well! I'm sure you all remember Halo Reach's space mission where you had to pilot your Sabre and defend the station from the incoming Covenant attack squads. I always thought it was strange they spent so much effort on a space combat sequence if they were only going to use it for a 10 minute level. Since it's confirmed that we have our own spaceships, it's only natural to think that we'll get to indulge ourselves in some delicious space combat as well. I'm sure Bungie included the space mission in Reach to both test out their systems and get our reactions to how it played out. We were basically beta testing that aspect of Destiny before we even knew what it was. "[i]Clever bastards.[/i]" What do you want to see for the space combat in Destiny (once they confirm it)? Small scale dog fights? Battles between giant cruisers? Personally, I would love to see two factions go at it in space with their personal ships. Giant 16 vs. 16 teams would be fantastic to see in-game. What about you Seventh Column?

        • I think back to Colony Wars where you had small spaceships that engaged in dog fights and attacked larger frigates and even dreadnought sized ships. I wouldn't mind being in a larger ship either but Colony Wars was great in my opinion. If we get anything like what we saw in Reach I would be happy, especially if it is my own ship I built/modified. Having a crew complement that I can have maintenance and upgrade/modify my ship while I am planet side would be even better. To answer your speculation, I also thought they were testing what ideas they had for a space battle of their own creation.

        • So long as they avoid Star Wars: The Old Republic's "shooter-on-rails" idea of space battles, I'm perfectly fine with whatever Bungie wants to include. Battles between giant cruisers, solo or small-squadron actions, etc. And please, for the love of God, don't overpower the radar/sensors to make it/them a superpowered all-seeing Eye of Sauron. I'd like a game, for once, where I had to use my eyes to look for other ships hiding in debris fields or asteroid belts.

          • Much of this infiltrating large ships and space battles is sounding quite similar to Star Wars: Battlefront II; however, I would like to see a more in-depth display of the large ships, and not like four rooms...

            • Another thing I think they tested with the space dogfighting level is loading all of it during a cutscene, no loading screen between FPS and flying a spaceship.

              • I would like to see random encounters. In example: In the game menu I choose to leave Earth to go to Mars... Half way through the cut scene it get interrupted to notify you that you have been intercepted in a gravity well. -from this point on all players traveling from Earth to Mars (or vice versa) will now get caught in this gravity well- Your the first to arrive and it's a Cabal ambush! Several fighters and a frigate generating the well. You can't escape until the frigate is destroyed. As you start to engage other guardians get caught in their trap. What was one a suicide mission now looks like you might service. You and the other guardians defeat the Cabal. -After the frigate is destroyed other players will no longer get caught in the well- Then you use your tractor beam to salvage the loot before you continue to your destination. Sounds fun, exciting, and would be a random encounter.

              • I hope that you actually get to fly your ship from location to location, and not just get a two minute cutscene like in Mass Effect of your ship flying through space. A takeoff and landing cutscene would be fine, but having a ship would seem pointless if it was basically the "fly" mechanic in Pokemon.

                • the reach space combat was only one person per ship, it'd be so much better if there were ships were there are gun turrets and different roles inside the ship so everyone doesn't have to fly, and/or the pilot doesn't have to focus on shooting at shit! and they should at least give players and clans the choice of having more than one player in each ship, more like the falcons in reach, also if they used that type of set-up they could put ships into the ground based PVP without making them OP. it would also mean you could have a ship more like the Normandy from mass effect, and have your home ship rather than just a mode of transport? more like the falcons in reach, also if they used that type of set-up they could put ships into the ground based PVP without making them OP. as for PVP game types, it'd be awsome to have small scale ship-ship dogfights, but also cruiser-cruiser battles like in star wars battle front games? and how about a cooperative protect the convoy mode, against AI opponents like horde mode or something? and then a counter game to that where you attack and loot AI convoys, that would be great then if there were different size ships (on both sides) so you can try to utilize the different ships for the best outcome. another thing some others have mentions is when your flying to another planet, getting randomly attacked or being pulled away to help defend something would be epic, especially if when you enter a certain region in the solar system, you'll always encounter the same race of AI, less random, if you see what i mean, so if the cabal are occupying mars, when you fly past you get attacked by cabal...? another awsome idea would be if you get attacked on the ground, and you can call in a clan mate in who is flying the ship to give air support and to attack dropships, or to do extractions and stuff?

                    • They mentioned that when designing Reach they had a gamemode of something like 6v6 space battles made, but dropped it because they thought it didn't fit with the typical feel of Halo. Perhaps that was also testing for a Destiny multiplayer mode as well? In general though, I'd love to see a firefight-esque mode that's like it is in the Reach campaign of tougher and larger, more powerful enemy ships spawning in over time, and players have to work together to not die or defend and objective or something. That, as well as that I'd love to see clans get their own giant ships to store their personal ships in that can be taken into battle with other clans with the members either piloting their own ships, or controlling guns on the main clan ship, with the objective to win to destroy all enemy ships and to hit the critical points of the enemy clan ship to take it down. Preferably though this would only be for aesthetic reasons, and all the ships will still be fully functioning after the battle is over. As for simply player versus player battles in general, I'd love to see both space and planet atmosphere dogfighting, and think there should be two different versions of it: one where you get only one life and have to kill all the enemy players, and another where you get unlimited lives, but are aiming to ge the most kills like a typical deathmatch.

                      • Reach had space combat? Oh yeah. That one really forgettable mission where you fly around in a small flying space and shoot like 5 enemies at a time for about 15 minutes before getting to the actually mission.

                        • I want what MAG did.... 128vs128.... Get on it for ur next game, Bungie.. MWHAHAHAHA I have a PS3, 16 vs 16 isn't that big............. at least 24 vs 24 should be a small match.... They should try that thing from BF1942, the ship vs ship battles...... or what Eternal Silence (the HL2 Source Mod, google it) should do....

                        • If its in (which seems likely), I suspect small dogfights. I can't imagine we will be able to own anything "frigate" sized or above. I put frigate in quotes, because people have very different versions of whats a frigate, and the best scale I can think would be the assault frigates from reach. I imagine we will be able to pilot "corvette" class ships and larger fighters. The best example of a corvette class (as I see it, the definition of classes of space ships isn't very clear cut) would be something like the millennium falcon from star wars. Small, maneuverable, multipurpose ships that can be piloted by a single person but can support a larger crew. Note that my scale of classes of ships comes from the game Homeworld. I could see there being missions where we participate in larger space battles though. Whether we use personal craft, or use something provided is a good question. I also imagine the presence of frigate class or above could happen, but would be NPC controlled. At least, that's how I picture it.

                          • I think they should do something similar to Star Wars Battlefront 2 combined with star fox. only difference is make it where you can travel mostly anywhere and able to drive your big space ship. Also make it where while your fighting a new enemy ship comes in to battle or a friendsly fellow guardian.

                          • Yeah I've thought this since Reach came out, so I agree. My only concern, my MAJOR concern, is that... I don't want to be force oriented. In Reach it forces you to a certain up-down orientation unless you hold a button (which it doesn't tell you about). I should be able to fly whatever orientation I want. Bleh.

                            Some physics would be nice. As much as I enjoy flying my futuristic spaceship/plane through space, I can't get over the fact that rudders don't work for steering in a vacuum. Not that simple flying is bad. I just would love to be accelerating at 7 G's and be able to rotate my ship without losing any forward momentum. Let's say, if there was something right behind me.
