Harry Potter vs. Lord of the Rings?

Harry Potter

Lord of the Rings

Both are massive, popular fantasy epics, and in my opinion the two best fantasy works there are. Out of these two, which do you guys prefer? It's a tough call, but as much as I love Harry Potter, LotR gets a slight edge for me. It just was so....epic. The concept of the journey, the encounters, etc, just gets me so pumped. The LotR trilogy remains as some of my favorite movies of all time. I will say though, I do find the Harry Potter books easier to reread than the Lord of the Rings books.

  • Harry Potter is good, but not that good...

  • I never read the Harry Potter books, but it won't be hard for them to beat the LotR books. Tolkien had a great imagination, but he was not a good writer.

  • I love both series but I think LOTR is better when it comes to fantasy.

Harry Potter is the inferior fantasy.

  • The sheer physical expanse of LotR, the folklore, the magic, and the overall atmosphere was IMO much more interesting than Harry Potter. Now don't get me wrong, Harry Potter is an AMAZING story that I could not even dream of coming up with, but just the massive world where LotR takes place is much more interesting. There's so much history and so many backstories to it that it blows my mind. The books however are extremely hard to read mainly because the events occur at a much slower rate than the movies, but it can really help you feel like you are really part of the story, not just an observer watching the highlights of a sports game.

LOTR has an immense and rich back story to it. The amount of time Tolkien put into developing the characters and the universe is astounding. He even created proper languages for the races of Middle Earth. That's why it gets my vote. Also Gandalf. I enjoy Harry Potter, but I find both the books and the films to be seriously overrated. Especially the films. Was there any need in two parts to Deathly Hallows? Part 1 was just a big "travel the country doing bugger all" fest. You could skip half the movie and you wouldn't have missed anything crucial to the plot.

    • At least LOTR was filmed in New Zealand. Harry potter was done mostly in a green room.

    • For the movies, I think LotR is better because they are all exceptional movies. The Harry Potter movies are much more varied in quality. I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was excellent, both parts of Deathly Hallows were very good, and then the rest of the movies varied from pretty good to "meh", Half-Blood Prince being at the top and Goblet of Fire being "meh". For books, though, I'm always going to have a soft spot for Harry Potter. Granted, I've never read the LotR books, but I don't think they would change anything. Harry Potter was the first major series I started reading when I was probably 5 or 6. And I've probably read the entire series at least ten times through, and books 3, 5, 6, and 7 even more than that.

    • Harry Potter for both books and movies. I found LOTR quite boring to read and really enjoyed the movies though.

    • I much prefer Harry Potter. I'm just not a big LOTR fan. It's too slow paced for me, and it takes itself too seriously.

    • Reading a Harry Potter book more than once is hard for me. It just isn't very deep. It's like watching a Days of our Lives episode more than once. Still I respect the world Rowling created. In the hands of a better author it would have been magnificent. Lord of the Rings however, easily warrants at least a second read.

    •
The LOTR books are tedious and boring to read, but Tolkien obviously put a lot of love into the lore. I still prefer reading Harry Potter. As for movies, there's no contest: the LOTR trilogy is miles ahead of Harry Potter.
This, basically.

    • I too enjoy both, but it is still no contest to me which is better. I'd rather watch / read LoTR over HP.
