Let's Discuss: Destiny Enemies

I just want to open a thread purely to get my thoughts over the enemy races we will face in Destiny, as well as seeing what you lot think about them. 1. The Vex These lot are looking good. I tend to not to take to machines being enemies in games and film alike, though these guys are shaping up well. 2. The Fallen I think these are the most interesting bunch. They just seem more alien to me than the rest. 3. The Cabal Now these seem interesting, being big and all, but the image of their faces we saw last night made me feel that they were just big ogres. I know they're ugly, but thats about it. They just look like big ugly men. No sort of alien look apart from that. 4. The Hive I have a problem with this faction. That being that they are described as being zombies, undead. Now I know that some people would argue that zombies can be classed as sci-fi and use The Flood as a good example. But I'd say that they were aliens, true zombies are supernatural, not in the bounds of science and Destiny being a sci-fi, the undead have no place in it. Now I just hope that these are basically The Flood for Destiny and are true aliens but the souls instead of noble gases discussion Joe Staten makes me doubt that. 5. ? Okay. Now remember that artwork yesterday that was shown to us of the mood/enemy panel. Notice how there were five of these panels. Four being easily distinguished as the four factions listed above, leaving the yellow one unidentified. Now this could just be the panel for Humanity, but by the look of it, I have the feeling that that big monster that was chained up in the reveal vidoc could maybe be part of its own faction. Sorry some were more fleshed out than others, but I"m interested to see what you all think.

  • There's was this guy who posted old concept art for the hive. They were dead aliens with a worm in the back of their head that reanimated them.

  • I don't think that "true" zombies are necessarily supernatural. Some of the best zombie fiction, like '28 Days Later,' has a biological basis for zombieism. I think the Hive are supposed to be zombie-like, but not literally zombies. They're described as an "ancient race," and are one of the more darknessy... darkness armies. They're so dark that what they consider life seems like unlife to us. I also don't think they're like the Flood, which many people claim.

I think the Fallen are the ones with the souls that get ripped out of their bodies when they die. If memory serves, DeeJ mentioned something like that in a Mailsack a while back. As for the Hive, I think of them more as mummified aliens than zombies. I imagine they avoided that term more because it brings up those ridiculous bandaged weaklings, rather than desiccated corpses. As for the fifth race, we think it's called the Glimmer, it was a name that was copyrighted by Bungie at around the same time that The Hive was copyrighted. Personally I think the Glimmer has something to do with the picture you put onto the post, notice that this is the first time we've seen mixed enemies, which seems odd for a postcard. Even odder is the fact that they are weaponless, and have green glowy stuff coming out of their eyes, and are in an unnatural looking fog. Something is controlling them, and "The Glimmer" sounds like a good name for such a magical force or entity that would do such a thing.

    • The Hive and Vex look amazing to me. Although, I doubt that The Hive will be the successor to The Flood. The Fallen look pretty cool too. Towards the beginning of the GDC trailer, after the Hive with green eyes is shown there was some sort of creature briefly shown. It looked like a Hive-Fallen Hybrid. And idea what it was?

    • I actually really like the idea of the Hive. During the GDC (I believe on a very similar subject, something about souls being ripped out) they talked about the point you raise. That they don't really want to be confined to the sci-fi genre, that they want to kind of break the mold in a sense (obviously not a direct quote). On the same note, however, I feel like we do need to know some kind of backstory/info about them before I can make a real judgement on them. My big question(s) about them is all about how they...exist really. Are they actually born that way? Probably through some asexual way of reproduction if so. Or do they infest like a zombie/zerg/flood type creature would do. Either way, though, as long as it's not just "braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiins" as their objective then they're ok in my book.
