Bnext: Rip it to Shreds (With Etiquette)

I have not seen this posted anywhere, but then again, in my defense, I'm still trying to understand exactly how this all works. But, my personal gripes are not the subject of this post, instead, your gripes are. While I've been browsing the forums I have noticed a strange trend of users condemning others for posting feedback, stating "chill out brah, it's only a Beta". I can't help but shake my head at this. The point is that Bnext is in Beta mode. That means we need to tear it to shreds. That means we need to find every single thing that we don't like, and then scream at the top of our lungs, waving our arms, so Bungie notices. Betas are tests of future products. The Bnext Beta, I'm going to guess, looks a lot like what the true Bnext will look like. That's why the Beta looks the way it does. It's testing the site and the features to see what the popular community opinion is. If you don't say anything, nothing is going to change, and when the Beta flies away, only to be replaced by the final product, you'll be sorely disappointed when you find that it looks a lot more like the Beta did, because you didn't raise enough hell. Now, I need to watch my word choice here. I'm not saying send Bungie angry rants and tear them a new one. Well, I am, but you need to be tactful about it, so here are some tips for you. 1) Find a pre-existing thread. There is strength in numbers. You'll get more done, and make things easier for the web team if they only have one place to go. One thread of a thousand replies will carry more weight then a thousand posts of only one reply, and, it centralizes the complaints, maximizing the webteam's time for other suggestions. 2) When you find that niche of yours, that nice little rant and the thread to go with it, be tactful. While I can't speak for them, I doubt the web team is particularly interested in reading a bunch of posts in 1337 speak or all caps, or anything of the sort. Use your good English, and stay polite. Happy people are more inclined to agree with you as opposed to someone who's mother you just insulted. Even if you think they deserve it. 3) Most importantly, be specific and concise. Vague ramblings about the "good old days" isn't what they want. They want to know the specifics of what you want, what you like, and what you don't like. Putting it any other way is again, just going to waste their time. So please, take my advice, and tear Bnext asunder with your suggestions and criticisms. Betas are meant for this. But always remember, keep it classy.

I'm all for ripping it to pieces, and I'd hazard a guess that not one person that posts "Chill man, it's only a beta." would say they have no problems at all with it. It's just frustrating when someone (who is obviously going to hate the final layout unless it is a carbon copy of the previous) tries to justify their opinion as a fact. Some have claimed the tags system is too confusing, and I'm guessing that they have yet to actually try to understand it for fear of actually liking it. They compare it to "the bastard child of FB-Youtube-Reddit" and claim that everyone will turn into the users of those sites, posting mindless updates of their lives in 140 characters or less, because for some reason, the layout exudes a brainwashing wave that causes users to behave like they're on Twitter. And worst of all (at least in my book), are the ones who post a sob story of how their experience on B.net has been destroyed and they threaten to leave/abandon the community unless it goes back exactly the way it was. Opinion isn't unwelcome, but expecting B.next to be anything other than a different experience from what you're used to is just being silly. Sorry guys, I had to get that out there. TL;DR People who give useless feedback really rustle my jimmies.

  • Agreed Rollin! We are suppose to rant about things we don't like so changes can be made.

  • I think that the old forum setup was better. I came to browse the forums but now it all seems like a jumbled mess.I think the hash-tag stuff should be removed and replaced with the old tradition forum setup because the hash-tags are confusing and unnecessary for a game developer's website. The reply/comment setup is confusing as well. When I see a post my first instinct is to hit reply but that creates a sub thread of sorts. I think the two should be flipped or even remove one. Why make it so you can only like or dislike the OP? the posts aren't in chronological order either which defeats the purpose of a forum.

    • I agree. This is a beta. The point of betas is to shred them to pieces. We found out which things work and which don't. It is our duty as beta testers to voice our opinions. We need to, as you said, do it tactfully, though. Realize that you are talking to another human being. Be polite, be kind, but have your voice heard.

    • As long as I get my Halo 2 Emblem, I am willing to accept change. I do miss the traditional layout of the forums. I never came to bungie.net with intent to find a specific topic. I came to browse, and if I saw something interesting I would get involved. Bring back stickies!

    • While I've seen plenty of very insightful comments on the design, I think the majority of the community is going to have to accept the idea of the new forum before they start nitpicking the specifics. The vast majority of the conversations so far have been along the lines of "I like it"/"I hate it." We all knew change was coming, but I think it's still a bit of a shock for most. Still, it seems pretty obvious in hindsight why Bungie kept so tight lipped about the coming changes. Rather than sitting around and complaining about them for months, the users now have the opportunity to get used to it before suggesting changes.

      • Agreed. It's something that irks me when I read threads, yet I often find myself saying it in my head.

      • I quite like the new look. Could use some more things, but for now I feel it's adequate, considering it's "beta".

        • Exactly. Nothing wrong with some criticism, just keep it constructive and civil. Although I do enjoy muting people....a little too much. Muhahahaha!

        • I find it difficult to balance my replies between, "clam the hell down" and "yeah, you're totally allowed to complain. That's the point." It can be hard to describe why someone doesn't like the new forum. So we'll end up with someone ranting about much they hate a new feature, but won't explain exactly what about it that bugs them or how they want it fixed or improved upon other than "change it back!" Anyways, like I said, people totally should tear it apart, but they need to remember to say the why and how.
