About the whole "Marathon-Halo" thing

How could Marathon be the prequel(sp) to Halo if Halo takes place in 2552 and Marathon takes place in 2794?

 •
Posted by: haloplayer2kill I dont know if Marathon is in a different Universe then halo or they are in the same universe. But i do know they are connected somehow. I hope in the future Bungie tells something about this big debate.
Well Marathon and Halo are connected in this regard: They are both videogames made by the same company, and built around similar themes. Beyond that, there is no evidence for a plot connection. And Bungie has said something big about this debate--that they are not part of the same universe.

 • Well, the Universe DOES end at conclusion to Marathon Infinity, so it COULD be a prequel by a couple Billion years and one Big Bang later.

 •
Posted by: High Truth The only thing that could possibly make the time line problems obsolete would be that the Marathon universe just uses a date, while the Halo universe uses the date in relation to a "Military Calender". How does the "Military Calender" coincide with a normal calender?
I'll wiki it. EDIT: I think the military calendar is the same as the regular one. [Edited on 09.21.2007 3:30 PM PDT]

 • Dalmedya it may not be in the same universe but its possbile Marathon is in an alternate universe. There are just so many similarities. And whats up with the Marathon Symbol? Does the symbol have something to do with the connections between Marathon and Halo? I dont think Bungie put that symbol in halo just as an Easter egg because it is shown several times in the halo series. The symbol is on Captain Keyes Uniform in halo 1 and it is on the POA. What does this symbol mean? Heres a list of things which shows Marathon is eaither in the same Universe as Halo or is an alternate Universe. 1. The Control Room chamber in halo 1 is in the shape of the Marathon Symbol 2. SPNKr in Marathon to the Halo Rocket Launcher (this can show that the SPNKr is very similar to the Halo Rocket Launcher because it is from an alternate universe) Here is the link for more refences in halo that are realted to marathon http://halo.wiki.com/wiki/List_of_Marathon_references_in_Halo#Halo_2 Mabey The Marathon symbol in Halo is the symbol of the UNSC. The symbol is also on Keyes Pipe. So since the symbol can also be found on human guns in halo and on there ships that shows that it can be the USMC's symbol. This can show that the UESC in Marathon is an alternate universe version of the USMC which have similar names. This will show that even though Marathon is in a parallel universe then halo, it still shows that some things are not different between the 2 universes. It is also possable that the Symbol is a forerunner symbol because many forerunner things in halo have this symbol. Look at the link i posted for more evidence. This can also show that mabey the Jjaro in Marathon are the Forerunners in halo. They are very similar.

 • Agreed with everyone else -- there is no connection aside from similar elements drawn from the Marathon Universe to create the Halo Universe. Think of those similar elements in Halo as being a tribute to Marathon, rather than part of the same universe.

 • There are a bunch of fun theories, and I've kicked around a few myself, but without something more substantial than repeated themes and imagery, there's no real way I can think of to draw a plot connection between the two.

 • I hope mabey in the future Bungie makes a game that connects Halo with Marathon.

 • I kind of like the theory that marathon actually takes place before halo is fired, though you'd have to talk to some of the more obssessive unity theorists to get the whole thing.

 • It is possable that they dont take place in the same Universe but insteid take place in an Alternate Universe. So the Marathon Universe is an Alternate Universe of the Halo Universe. Thats why so many things are similar but there are differences. [Edited on 09.20.2007 6:52 PM PDT]

 • Many people would certainly like to be able to directly connect the universes of Halo and Marathon. At first glance, there seem to be a myriad of similarities between the two games which suggest that they possibly share the same universe. The most obvious of these include similar cyborg heroes, similar weapons, similar hostile alien races, and similar advanced artificial intelligences. The fact that the 26th century of Marathon's timeline is "intentionally blank" and coincides with the century of Halo's timeline in which the Master Chief is battling the Covenant seems to add credence to the theory. However, if one digs deeper into both universes, various contradictions can be found; especially on the topic of technology. For instance, the Marathon, which was built from 2405 to 2472 and launched in 2472, has a teleportation system which the various AI's use to transport the Security Officer around. Teleportation technology is unknown to humanity in Halo's universe in 2552. Also, in the Halo universe, faster-than-light space travel was invented in 2170. In the Marathon universe the Marathon was built from 2405 to 2472, yet was not capable of super luminous speeds. These simple contradictions alone are proof that any direct connection between the universes of Marathon and Halo is not viable. Personally, I think it is obvious that Halo was largely inspired by Marathon in the same way Fallout was inspired by Wasteland. It is easy to see the many and various aspects of the Marathon universe which were revisited in Halo. However, this does not mean that the two games take place in the same universe or that they can be connected in any straightforward manner.

 • Lots of people seem to think Halo is the sequel to Marathon. I think Halo is the prequel to Marathon. I think the timeline goes Pathways into Darkness--> Halo--> Marathon.

 • The Marathon and Halo universes certainly have things in common but i don't think anyone would say Marathon was the prequel to Halo (someone correct me if my Marathon knowledge is obvious lacking here). [Edited on 09.20.2007 2:11 PM PDT]
