Human ships had their pilot at the front so there was a big danger about data falling into enemy hands. (Thus the Cole protocol.) 2. They are going to be well fortified in there against enemy attacks, since they are in the center. 3. You have to travel all that distance once inside anyways. 4. They wanted to explode in the first place.
