= could be an amazing game.
I know games like the War Z are sort of playing around with the concept, but I'd like to see a bigger budget studio try this out.
What I'm talking about is semi-persistent worlds with win or lose conditions, fast character progression balanced out by huge death penalties or perma-death.
An example could be aliens invading planet Earth, and over a period of 4 real-time weeks players have to fend off their attacks, investigate crashed or landed UFOs, invade their bases, and find a way to eliminate the alien menace before they unleash a devastating weapon that would leave the planet in ruins. You'd level and gear up fighting off the aliens in cities across the world, then form parties and launch attacks against UFOs or form raids to invade alien bases while trying to gain information about the alien and gear up for an attack against their headquarters. Players could craft gear themselves out of alien alloys and dynamically effect the server by investing resources in research trees to unlock new vendors, skill trainers, or craftsman (engineers/scientists) that others on their server could make use of.
I think it has potential. What do you think Flood?

So I played it and it was pretty fun, got to level 17 before I got killed by the raid boss. I definitely think it could use more of a tutorial though. I think there may be a main hub in the game, but nothing pointed me in that direction (I saw an icon that said Nexus, I assume that takes you there maybe?) The CONCEPT is exactly what I'm talking about. You're just running around fighting stuff, you meet up with other guys, fighting bigger monsters, then go raid some dungeon with TONS of players, all in sort of short spurts. If they could make that into a AAA-title, I would be down for dropping 60$ and maybe a sub. [Edited on 10.07.2012 1:07 PM PDT]
