That's because they're not trying to be the original. In the same way people recommend the redlettermedia reviews for the Prequels, I'd recommend their review for Star Trek 2009. He basically says that the way Abrams is doing Trek is the only way for Trek to have survived in modern cinema.
They're still true to the characters and the setting, and are still good movies. I think that's all that is needed.
