There are only three authorized hand signals when driving a car; right turn, left turn and stop. Extemporaneous hand signals might confuse other drivers of your intentions leading to a crash - which is why they are specifically prohibited by law. The appeals court didn't buy that explanation, ruling that the "nearly universal recognition that this gesture is an insult deprives such an interpretation of reasonableness."[/quote] [/quote] Two different things, the officer in the article believed the person was trying to get HIS attention, not other drivers as a signal. If he would of used the explanation given by myself, it might of been different. There are so many different things you can "charge" the person with, it is sort of a catch 22. Some courts will accept it, some won't.
