The same can be said of comics being only for kids, but you've got examples like Watchmen, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come and 300 that are for adults. For anime, there are a lot of kid friendly stuff, but things like Black Lagoon, Witchblade, Death Note, Hellsing, and Gantz that are mature.
