How hard is it to get into the gaming industry if...

If your not into programming or coding or any of that. Like let's say you won't to be on the story board, or be a play tester, and do all that without experience with another company, like how hard is it to get into the industry as a beginner?

 • It's not difficult to get into the games industry at all. It's slightly harder to get into the AAA sector.

 • A sufficiently good programmer can have little in the way of artistic ability and still make a game, but it isn't the other way around. However, the reason that artists and programmers are usually separate people is because not all artists are good at programming and vice versa. Designers are also usually different from engineers for much the same reason. With that said, you should be familiar with how a game functions if you want to become a game artist or designer, so you should at least know enough about programming that you can tell the difference between a bogo and a bubble sort.

 • Play testers have to have some coding/programming knowledge. You could always get hired on as something else, like a writer or a concept artist, though I don't know if concept artists have to do other work in-game, probably, so you'd have to learn some of that.

 • I'd say the best way is to do what you want to do. Want to be a writer for a game? Write stories for games; I suppose the technique, the form, is different than what is required for, say, short stories or novels, so that's a good thing to work on. Want to be an animator, make animations. Want to be X, make X. You will become more experienced and better every time you finish a project, and jobs will be just a matter of time and dedication... I hope.

 • Pretty hard. If you weren't one of the first original chosen few, it's very hard. There will always be someone better then you and possibly younger as well. The only way to get a better advancement is having that degree. I'm getting my Associates in Game and Art Animation here at MMI in MN. I'm also seriously planning on opening up my own video game company as a fall back in MN. There aren't ANY good ones here. But this is if I don't land a job at a creditable game company out west.
Posted by: xNiGhThAwKx19 Pretty hard. There are few spots open for writers, but they do open. There are more spots open for animators/artists. Playtesters have crappy jobs, playing the same game for 10 hours a day purposefully trying to break it gets real old, real fast. I respect them for it though. The best way to get hired as a writer is to go into game journalism first. The best way to get hired as a level designer, according to Kynan Pearson at least, is to work at a prison and get stabbed.
That kinda sucks, cause as much as I really want to make a gaming company, and or work on a game, the predominant jobs tha are open are things I don't enjoy doing or that I don't know how to do. Which like I said sucks. So I guess that's the end of that.

 • It's not hard, it will just take more time. I am sure there are other jobs somewhere in there that don't involve you knowing code and stuff.

 • Play testing is hard as -blam!- and not nearly as fun as you might think. And just looking at Bungie's criteria, you either need to have a crazy as -blam!- portfolio, be some kinda crazy-ass loose-canon prodigy type -blam!-, or have experience at some other place. At least a year or two. Unless you're starting your own company (not as fun as it sounds), joining an indie company (not a lot of money; long hours), or joining a large corporation (you will be one of thousands of people so the difficulty of standing out and getting noticed by superiors and/or moving up the positional food chain is high as -blam!-), you better count on needing one of the three aforementioned qualities.
