PSA: We've All Been New.

We've all been new, it's no secret. We all know the feeling of arriving at a mysterious new place, knowing nothing about it, and knowing no one. It is a very uncomfortable feeling. This happens right here on B.net. I know when I first started posting I didn't have any idea what was going on, and I'm still fairly new here. I think that we tend to push new members away here and I think we also tend to exclude them as well. I believe this has to change. We were all new once and how great would it have been for someone to reach out to you and give you some advice or even invite you to their private group so you could make some friends on this site? As it is right now there are very few brand new members but soon I think we can all agree that there is going to be a ton more. If someone post a thread here and it's obvious that they have no idea what's going on and it's also obvious that they're new here, don't ridicule them. Help them out and offer some advice. I'm not asking you all to be fake and wear a mask that has a smile, I'm just asking that you try to be a little more understanding with new folk. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I'm not saying that we're a bunch of jerks, because we're not. Most people here are pretty cool members, but there are some jerks here.I'm also not saying that I am innocent, because I'm not. I have been a jerk before and I regret it, but I want to give new members a better experience than I had. I was banned A LOT. I don't want new members to go through that.I'm sure you're wondering exactly what I'm asking of you all, right? Well, all I'm requesting of everyone is that you all try to lend new members a hand.If they post something in the wrong forum, don't go off on them. Simply direct them to the right forum in the post or even PM them. See a new member going down the wrong path in the flood (spamming, being a jerk, etc)? PM them and at least try to guide them. Most will refuse but some will listen, and that's all that matters. You can't help them all, but you can help some. Simple stuff like that would be cool, but what would be great? It would be great to see members of our community take some new members under their wing and bring them to their private groups or into their social circles to make friends. I would like to see B.net become a much more welcoming place. That's all. Could you do that? I may not be a veteran of this place but I know I'm going to try my best and I hope you all do the same. ITT: Discuss things that would have helped you when you were a new member here. TL;DR: Be nice to the newbies, mmkay? [Edited on 12.22.2012 2:49 PM PST]

  • Agreed. There's nothing more discouraging for a new fan than to enter a forum or community and have a ton of "veterans" be jerks to you.

If people are jerks it turns you into a jerk as well. It's a defense mechanism. If the people around you are jerks, people adapt and be jerks to fit in. This is what we don't want.

  • I'll try to be nice to them to best of my abilities(answer questions, point out rules if they break them, etc.) but I honestly think that the web team should create some sort of introduction video on how to get around B.net. Such topics should include work the forums, send a PM, possibly go over important rules(because who spent the time to read all the forum rules before posting). • We've all been new, but we haven't all ever lacked the ability to use common sense, read forum rules, or check a page or two to see if a thread was posted. Calling people out means they likely won't keep doing the same stupid act. Fun fact: New people that don't act ridiculous have nothing to fear.

I agree with you also and I also encourage everyone to try and help out with new members. It will make the forums and the community in a whole a better place and we will all have a better experience here with each other. To be honest this isn't hard we just have to all be willing to take a few extra seconds to lend a helping hand Remember you don't have to do a huge thing... Even the little stuff matters. Like being a welcoming face or answering a question. Here is a Thread You can look at for ways to help new members. • No one here that is actually a dick is going to pay any attention to cries for a nicer community. Moderators are going to have to crack down on hostility in a serious way if the culture of the place is ever going to change. That means they're going to have to start reading more than just an OP and people are going to have to report members who are being dicks on page 10 of a 20 page thread.

I'd bet money on that.
I do that all the time...? OT: Agreed, but that goes both ways. If new members are resistant to adapt (bear with me) to both the norms of the site and the rules thereof, patience will surely wear thin quicker than not. This is the case many times with highly active new members who, for lack of a better phrase, continually "just don't get it" or are resistant to do so.

  • You don't tell me what to do. And following the rules abolishes the need for threads like this.

  • You don't have to change them, You just do your part in making the community nicer. You can't change the way other people are by just asking for a nicer community, but you can control what you do. • I doubt things around here will change so quickly. I will, however try and be a bit more..tolerable towards newer members. Just for you, OP. K? K.

People aren't going to change and we know that, but that's ok. We just need the members who are already cool to be even cooler and just lend a helping hand to new members.
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55 OT: Agreed, but that goes both ways. That would be impossible. But, we can help some people and that's all that counts.
Posted by: Bungie Sam You don't tell me what to do. I'm requesting that we make a small effort to be a little nicer and to help the new members out. If you're going to be a jerk then that is also against the rules, keep that in mind. Look peeps, I'm not trying to change how things work around here. All I want is for some people to step up and be a little more kind and to lend a helping hand to new members. Welcome them, invite them to some groups, and just try to be their friends.

  •
Posted by: HOOBLA 911 Agreed. There's nothing more discouraging for a new fan than to enter a forum or community and have a ton of "veterans" be jerks to you.
This is true - and I never experienced it here. I totally remember when I first poked around the forums on my now deleted-due-to-inactivity profile back in high school. I didn't know -blam!- about Bungie. I was looking for rumors about Halo 2. There were two distinct types of members (as I observed in the forums): A) Those who came to Bungie.net through Halo: CE B) Those who were Bungie fans from before Halo: CE Group B was awesome in being nice, pointing me to trying old school Bungie games, and filling me in on Bungie lore, traditions, and customs. Now we are group B. Let us carry on the legacy. Edit: Actually, it was the Myth crowd that struck me as so different. I could connect with the Marathon ppl - I had even played marathon as a child, but forgotten about it. But the RTS corner of the Septagon...they are their own beings.
