This thread comes to mind
People may have unique jobs/done cool things which can make interesting discussion.
How should we approach this?
Should a user PM a mod with proof and then have a mod edit the thread saying it is "confirmed"?
-
I like your idea, even though it would probably be rarely used.
-
'IAMA?' Anyways, I'm sure it was the part about spamming somebody's inbox, not the part about it being a lie.

(like famous people, people with cool jobs, etc).

We're not Reddit. [Edited on 12.02.2012 11:07 PM PST]
Posted by: spartain ken 15 How should we approach this?
Simple: go to Reddit.
-
reddit go away there are very few people here who have jobs that would be even remotely interesting.
-
"Moderator Approved" threads are a thing of the past. I hope they never return.
-
There's nothing to approach. You can post whatever you life as long as you follow the rules of this website. People can either choose to believe your or not. The difference between what you're suggesting and what was linked was that the linked thread was designed to harass someone.
-
Sure, and lets add like buttons, and the ability to follow people! How about a section that is only user uploaded pictures!
-
what no this is stupid stop dude really you honestly should just stop right now holy cow

IMO, these threads are dumb. If I cared about your profession, I would look it up myself. If you want to make a thread with discussion value about a profession, then that's fine. But just "I'm a _______, ask me questions!" is not. © [Edited on 12.02.2012 8:42 PM PST]

How about we direct them to a subreddit.
Posted by: GPK Ethan We're not reddit.
We're also not Usenet. What's your point?
-
AMA's are almost solely found on that site, and these types of threads are better suited for Reddit, not B.Net. I'm not saying AMA threads should be locked, but I don't think they belong on this site.
Posted by: GPK Ethan AMA's are almost solely found on that site
Just as almost every other conceivable topic is. Why bother having this discussion here if we could be having it on Reddit instead?
Posted by: GPK Ethan and these types of threads are better suited for Reddit, not B.Net. As previously stated, there's nothing to really approach. And Ask Me Anythings are useful because you get to ask more about their career than what they do. Insight about the average work day, shenanigans, and what not. [Edited on 12.02.2012 10:47 PM PST]

Let me reword what I said. I cannot think of any other site that does regular AMA's, while off-topic threads and forums are present on every type of site that has forums.
Posted by: dazarobbo
Posted by: GPK Ethan AMA's are almost solely found on that site
Just as almost every other conceivable topic is. Why bother having this discussion here if we could be having it on Reddit instead?
To answer your second retort/question. I don't really have a solid idea as to why, it's just my opinion. I feel as though B.Net is a completely different kind of site when compared to Reddit, so maybe that's where I get my it from. [Edited on 12.02.2012 11:06 PM PST]

I think if people want to do it they can. Maybe we could do... COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT!
-
This brings us back to a few 'I'm a girl on the internet ask me anything and i'll do a video reply' threads a month or two ago. I said it was stupid and should have been locked, nothing was done. lol.
-
I lock all AMA threads I come across here. They do not remain on-topic, are often flamebait, are rarely interesting, and nearly always spawn parody threads. Reddit's format is FAR better suited to AMA threads than this forum. So the procedure for AMA threads is don't post them.

Dont know how I feel about it but I know there are some very interesting people that have cool stories to tell in this community. Like Foman hinted at, I doubt threads would remain on topic.

Our community has many interesting people and they may have interesting topics to make about their profession or their day.
