Ignatio Delgado, a pilot, is charged by the complex's leaders to safe-keep the Rubble's last datachip with un-Cole Protocoled NAV records... aka, a map back to Earth. The Jackals quickly break their "alliance" with these humans, and try to steal the chip from Delgado; luckily, he is saved by a member of the radical infiltration group of Spartan IIs, Grey Team. As Delgado interacts with Grey Team, two individuals are trying to deal with the appearance of modified-for-human-use plasma weaponry: a younger Captain Keyes is tracking things on the Innie side, while the not-yet-Arbiter Thel investigates the Jackals. Naturally, these two end up at the Rubble, but both are captured; Thel and his group of Elites after being betrayed by their Jackal escort, and Keyes after being betrayed by one of his crew (actually an Innsurrectionist). It is then revealed that the Jackals are massing an army of Grunts on a nearby moon, under orders from the Prophet of Truth (Thel, being tasked by Regret, obviously had no idea). The S-IIs end up heading to the moon as well, and destroy a few installations to allow Juliana, Rubble's AI, to drop the complex's asteroids on the moon, thus destroying the Grunt army. The citizens, naturally, end up escaping to Earth in a massive hollowed out asteroid fitted with slipspace drives called the Exodus. On Thel's side of things, he is forced to kill one of his Elite friends who realized the true insidious nature of the Prophets; on the UNSC's side, Gray Team is given a new ship and heads to territories unknown with Delgado as their pilot, while Keyes is promoted to Commander. [quote][b]Glasslands[/b][/quote] Halsey, Mendez, and the Spartans, having explored the Dyson Sphere for awhile, end up at some kind of installation. After some weird characterization - Halsey being a foolish, doubting airhead, Mendez being high-and-mighty, and the Spartans acting like normal marines - they make their way inside, but Lucy leaves the group and falls through a wall or something. After getting her bearings, she realizes she is inside a room full of war sphinxes (see Cryptum/Primordium for explanation as to what those are) and shoots an Engineer because she freaks out under stressful situations, but only if she is alone in a room with a possible enemy and not facing immeasurable odds with other Spartans. One of the Engineers devises a system of communicating with Lucy through sign language and her HUD, making them best fwiends forever. Anyhow, after being shown up by Mendez in terms of morality and intelligence, basically-useless-Satan Halsey and the others find her, and try to figure out how to get a signal out to the UNSC. Halsey starts repeating this fact because she is "stressed" or something, and decides to threaten an Engineer with a gun because that's something Halsey would do, threaten people with guns. Because she has the self-control of a five year old, and not a Spartan, Lucy becomes enraged - as Halsey predicted earlier in the book, since Ackerson and ONI chose to pump the S-IIIs full of rage-inducing drugs - and punches Halsey straight in the face, instantly killing her. Oh, wait, Spartans are basically Stormtroopers now, which means Halsey gets back up with only a minor nose-bleed. Everyone seems fine with Lucy punching Halsey in the face, and eventually they figure out how to get a message out to the UNSC. Meanwhile, ONI -blam!- Parangosky has assembled a crack team of operatives to start a civil war amongst the Elites. Without the Covenant, the once-capable Elites are suddenly brainless morons, unable to perform the simplest of maintenance tasks without destabilizing the engines and setting off the fuel cells. As such, it would be a smart idea to kick them while they are down, especially those who respect and as such, have allied with humanity, like that Arbiter -blam!-. Included in this team are Serin Osman, an S-II washout who hates Mengel- I mean Halsey - with everything she has, Vaz and the other ODST, who both end up hating Halsey by the end of the book, a translator guy, S-II Naomi, and the AI Black Box. They begin to incite civil war on Sanghelios by giving guns to local radical Jul. After some inconsistencies and boring "let's make Halsey look bad" stuff, the UNSC/ONI (ONI being all-powerful now) arrives at Onyx - which has been dropped out of the Dyson Sphere, meaning it now occupies the space Onyx used to - and arrests Halsey because they can. Vaz almost kills her in her sleep after reading the awful things she did on her own to those poor kids, but doesn't because that would make him as bad as her or something. Parangosky tells Halsey to her face that ONI had no idea about anything Halsey was doing with the S-II program - you know, the same ONI that had complete control over the S-II program, and ended up repeating it with even worse atrocities with the S-IIIs - especially not the flash clones, and basically decides to lock her up and make her a slave of ONI. The translator from Serin's team is allowed to stay on Sanghelios for a bit, but just as he does, explosions happen and the book ends. [quote][b]Cryptum and Primordium[/b][/quote] I'll just give a brief bullet-style rundown of what happened in these, so I hope that's good enough. Kinda sick of writing about Halo thanks to that last one. - The Forerunner come in multiple castes, and advance through what basically amounts to changing one's DNA (i.e., a Shaper can take on the traits of a Warrior if they so desire). Basically, they are kind of like caterpillars in that they metamorphosize. - Ancient Humans, once on the level of the Forerunner, were defeated by the latter in an interstellar war, due to having to fight on two fronts (one versus the Forerunner, another versus the Flood). - Bornstellar, the main character of Cryptum, "mantles" (not the term, but I can't recall it and this is close enough) the Didact, the most deadly Forerunner of them all. Essentially, Bornstellar takes on his physical and mental characteristics - he's still Bornstellar, but he's also something more. - There are actually 11 or so Halos, and another Ark. A Halo can repair structural damage by removing the broken piece and linking up the next and previous piece on the "chain;" this makes it smaller, but functional. - Mendicant Bias is capable of shutting down other Forerunner AI systems (there is a good name for this too, but alas, my memory) and has allied himself with the Flood/the Precursor - Bias uses the Halo Array to attack the leaders of the Forerunner, destabilizing them in preparation for the oncoming war - Humanity had captured the Precursor - a powerful being, scorpion-like in appearance but infected by the Flood - using a time-stasis pod (like cryo), but he managed to escape... then is caught by Bornstellar-Didact - The Prophets used to be a race known for their beauty. Ha! - Some Forerunner stuff - War Sphinxes (small fighters that are similar in design to, you guessed it, a sphinx), hard light (the light bridge being an incredibly basic example) which can change the very structure of a ship before your eyes, Combat Suits, time control, and gene manipulation. - An important caveat to gene manipulation: some particularly adept Forerunner - such as the Librarian, the Didact's lover, are capable of installing a [i]geas[/i] to a particular line of DNA. These [i]geas[/i] can influence the actions of an individual even hundreds of thousands of years down the genepool line. Crazy stuff. - Example of a [i]geas[/i]: a certain line might be able to navigate a trap-filled structure, even if the individual had never been there before, all because his/her greatx6 grandfather had this [i]geas[/i] implanted. - By the end of [b]Cryptum[/b], the Didact is seemingly killed and Bornstellar fully takes on his personality. Bornstellar's human friends, Chakas and Riser (I think, this has been a looooooong time) are missing. - By the end of [b]Primordium[/b], the Precursor has been captured by Bornstellar-Didact, and after revealing that the sought-after cure to Infection (which, supposedly, the Ancient Humans had created) is a myth, for the Flood chooses whom it shall infect, is killed using a time-lock (rapidly aging the creature into nothing). -Chakas himself is revealed to be Guilty Spark, or at least a copy of Guilty Spark, having been turned into an AI, and escapes the ONI ship he was being interrogated upon to find the Librarian in modern times.
