How do people do stuff like programming and 3D modeling?

How? It boggles my mind on how they can do it. I mean i can follow a tutorial and i can complete it but i don't learn anything from it since after i have done the tutorial i just forget everything, and when i try to do something on my own it looks like a piece of -blam!-. (Both 3D modeling and programming) I have the time and dedication to learn these things but i just don't know how to get started, if anyone could please give me some pointers i would appreciate it greatly. I am the kind of guy who learns from experience not reading a book over and over again to be honest. I want to learn, i really do i just don't know how to get started or keep the information i remember for like 5 seconds after the tutorial for a longer period of time. I have problems with money so book's are not much of an option right now atleast, i would have choosen something with programming as my line of education but i want this more as a thing i do for fun, a thing i do for the enjoyment of other's so i can make them happy and as a thing i can feel appreciated for doing. Also because i want to be my own boss. Please help me. TL:DR Point me in a direction to start please with the two things in the title of this thread. I got Blender alredy if that's any help, and i can maybe make a -blam!- looking table in it.

 • OP, buy an arduino and download Unity and just mess with the programming. That's literally how everyone learns.

 •
Posted by: TheBestTheyHad You gotta do it every day. I use Maya for at least 4 hours a day. And I learned.
I know that it's just that no info from any type of book gets stuck in my head, it's a real pain because i cant learn anything within programming and modeling. I learn from experience not reading but i don't know how to do stuff without reading books and tutorials but i don't remember anything from them and when i try it goes completely wrong. I feel like such a failure at everything because everything i want to do i have no talent in.
Money is a problem, is blender a good temporary substitute?
Get the student version of Maya. That's what I did and I didn't pay a thing. And yes blender is good. • For 3D Modelling use 3DS Max or Maya. I use 3DS Max as part of my course. [Edited on 10.08.2012 1:18 AM PDT]
