Teenager's stomach removed after drinking a liquid nitrogen...

Teenager's stomach removed after drinking a liquid nitrogen cocktail.
Gaby Scanlon was celebrating her 18th birthday at a bar in Lancaster when she had the drink and began to feel breathless. She developed severe stomach pain and was taken to hospital where she was diagnosed with a perforated stomach. Doctors performed emergency surgery to remove her stomach and save her life.
Linky. Man, that sucks. I expect to hear about a court case soon.. Though I am curious about one thing: How does having no stomach effect one's life? Discuss.

 •
Posted by: Stukka Bomb Diva Cool. Now read the rest I had to say
You, and about a dozen other people in this thread assume that she knew the drink contained liquid nitrogen. A picture of a drink giving off vapor is not the same as a warning given about the presence of liquid nitrogen. Dry ice is much safer in this regard, because it sinks to the bottom of the glass. And since it is a solid, people can comprehend the choking hazard even if they don't know it will burn them. The article did not state that she knew the drink contained liquid nitrogen. The bartender most likely did not warn her about the dangers of drinking the still effervescing beverage, or could have poured the liquid nitrogen too heavily. In either event, he is responsible for creating a dangerous beverage. If you would like to make the claim that she chose to get drunk, and couldn't comprehend the directions that is immediately countered by the fact it is illegal to serve someone who is that impaired. •
Posted by: Lifts Her Tail I want to know how she accidentally ingested liquid Nitrogen?
This. And if she did know that there was liquid nitrogen in her cup, did she never learn anything about liquid nitrogen in her science classes?

 • No sympathy, nobody should think drinking liquid nitrogen is appropriate.

 •
Posted by: spartanfornow
Posted by: Stukka Bomb Diva I tend not to drink alcohol unless its wine. But the point still stands that it was her choice to drink it. Not the bartander.
So if someone decides to sweeten their wine with antifreeze, and you drink it and get sick/go blind, clearly it is your fault for drinking the wine? •
Posted by: Stukka Bomb Diva
Posted by: coolmike699 When you buy a drink, you generally assume that it is safe to drink, right? If someone buys a beer, drinks it, and then tries to break the bottle over their head as a dare, then they are responsible for any injuries they get (because a reasonable person would expect to get hurt smashing glass on their head). But a reasonable person would assume that the cocktail they just bought would be safe to drink unless someone told them otherwise. If the bartender didn't tell the girl that their cocktail isn't safe to drink right away, then they were negligent.
I mainly drink water for a reason and I tend not to drink alcohol unless its wine. But the point still stands that it was her choice to drink it. Not the bartander. And the other posters are right that it is sold at high end bats. But that doesn't mean it is healthy. The least the bartender could do though was warn her of the risks involved, I agree on that.
Yes, it was her choice to drink it, but it was the bar that made it. They chose to serve that particular drink. Just because you choose to do something doesn't mean that you are responsible for dangers you didn't know about beforehand if you weren't given any warning.

 • This effect could have easily been accomplished with dry ice. Dry ice is much safer because 1) you can see it 2) you can contain it in such a way that it cannot be consumed. You shouldn't serve someone a drink that could be harmful. It's like serving someone a flaming shot. You're just asking for a disaster, but what is worse, vapor looks much more innocuous and does not speak to primal danger of FIRE HOT.

 •
Posted by: Forge Fan92 Firstly, it's her fault for drinking at a bar at the age of 18. Secondly, why in the world did she drink that stuff when it clearly looks toxic?
what age is it to drink where she was? And the bar was serving it... Many eat at McDonald's whilst knowing about the long term damage they are doing...

 •
Posted by: Google Chrome
Posted by: SubtleSpartan What kind of -blam!- up bar serves drinks with liquid nitrogen in them?
I feel like it might be common in a lot of higher end bars. Although I feel as if the article left out the fact that all of these bars probably have a disclaimer and a warning telling the customer NOT to drink the beverage until after it has stopped smoking so they do not inhale or ingest any of the liquid nitrogen.
It's the Daily Mail, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Everyone should know that liquid nitrogen is liquid at around -200 degrees and then pouring in your 91 degree body. It'll be like drinking boiling water and having steam inside your body. She was lucky EDIT: Fixed nitrogen liquid temperature
Ahem? As long as she listrened to drinking instructions, it's not stupid. It's considered a delicacy, and you should be prepared to drink it given instructions People use liquid nitrogen in all sorts of cuisine, takes one person to down it wrong and problems arise.
