Why is it that the Covenant has never heard of camouflage?

This has baffled me forever; all of the Covenant's vehicles are bright glistening purple, and covered with glowing lights. Why do they make no attempt to camouflage themselves, so that they aren't instantly spotted and killed? Why do Elites wear bright rainbow colours of armour, why would they denote their highest ranking officers with shining gold armour so that they are easy to spot and take out first? I mean, perhaps this issue is why the UNSC usually won ground battles :P Although, I'm not complaining, the vibrancy of the Covenant is part of why I love their vehicles and weapons!

 •
Posted by: AH4L
Posted by: LordOfBlah51 Active camo > normal camo. That's why.

Among the many solid explanations, this isn't one of them. Only Stealth Elites and Spec Ops have active camouflage.

 • They like purple, are confident in their power and don't feel like hiding it, and the commanding officers are typically expected to face danger. Otherwise, they wouldn't be commanding officers. They have to be leaders, but also deal with the fact that doing so makes them a target. Duty vs. Safety.

 • Whenever you go into the covenant place you usually see sleek purple and blue. That'd be camouflage for the ghost and wraith I guess.

 •
Posted by: Xd00999 Does anyone remember that joke about the pirate captain and his red shirt? Good observation, it is interesting that their predominant colour is also that of their blood. It would be like humans painting everything red.
I really think it would be horrifying if we painted everything crimson red, perhaps the Covenant think that it will have that affect on us, forgetting that not everybody has purple blood :P

However I've also seen walls of bright blue blood as well. Punch them little grunts to make it rain blue!

 • Because hiding in battle is dishonorable I suppose. Also, the high-ranking elites would welcome being shot at so they can get into more fights.

 • Purple iz da sneakiezt ones, cuz' humies ain't crumpd' a purple WAAAGH! /Ork logic OT: When you can turn invisible at will, teleport large portions of our army, and have city leveling weapons, camouflage is not that important. Plus, I would rather fight blue elites than various shades of brown and grey.

Pre-trilogy of course.
Uhh... no. The UNSC just happened to not suck as much on the ground as it did in space. In space, it was like trying to beat down a jet fighter with a rock. On the ground, you're just trying to beat down a tank with a grenade. It's more doable... but you're not on the "better" side here.

 • They have armor that makes them invisible :P I don't think they needed it. And besides, at night a banshee or ghost will blend in very well.

 • This times a hundred. It not only creates a great game mechanic, but it also distinguishes and solidifies their culture as alien. What made OP see a problem with their armor was that he compared their culture to ours. It shouldn't be done!

The UNSC pretty much always won groundside engagements, battles in space were the only times they ever really lost...where did you get that idea?
No, he's telling the truth. Spartans were the only ones truly capable of fighting back against covenant ground forces. A single elite major is capable of taking out and entire squad of ordinary marines.

 • The covanant have "camoflage" I don't think that this is the correct word for it. I believe "Stealth" is the correct word... First of all when I see an elite rage and start charging in some random direction or even towards me I instantly think, Wow, such ignorence that an elite who is supposed to be wise to charge at me without correctly judging the situation. That goes without saying these are just campign elites. On the contrary the elites that take place In Sangheili Halo Clans tend to be much more difficult do defeat as well as put up a formitable fight in which chances of wining or loosing against the elites are 50/50.. You've played firefight. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. ^WOAH, way off topic.. Not sure what was going through my head there.

 •
Posted by: Ockeghem Because Jason Jones realized gamers like colorful, fun, characters and not lame boring poop tone characters. Thank god. I mean, the bad guys in other games look so dull.
And this is also true. It's part of why I love Halo, it's not that dull unoriginal "gritty" tone that all other games use. I hate the "gritty" everything is brown and grey theme most games have, it's so boring...

 • They love the ceremonial armor, and if I'm correct, the gold/white/black elites(Councilors, Ultra, Ship and Fleet masters, zealots, and Spec. Ops.) all had superior armoring and shielding to the other elites.

 • The Covenant is very rigid in it's leadership, the colors likely make it easier for allied forces to recognize the leader of any engagement. While we would be weary of placing our leaders in anything that stands out, it makes sense in the Covenant Hierarchy since it's based on a strict meritocracy. Therefore, being seen or recognized (even by the enemy) is another chance to test your mettle and prove that you deserve your status. A single Field Commander generally has killed thousands of opponents himself, and outside of invincible Master Chief Petty Officer's that is quiet a feat.

 • They use active camouflage instead. Why worry about colors when you can be transparent. "Engaging active camouflage!" - Halo 2, start of "The Arbiter"
