Halo 4: A Hero Awakens -- Speculative Thread

I'll assume we've all seen the ViDoc, but just in case... This thread is for speculation of the Campaign. A brief outline of the things that were "new" in the above linked video is provided by yours truly below (if I've missed anything please say so!) - 1:39 in the video - one of the narrative designers, Lindsay Lockhart, says this: "..Chief is a guardian. Cortana is his guardian. The Forerunners were the guardians of their own Universe, and they might have to make a decision that not everyone is going to agree with and some people are going to condemn". "They" is not specified (is it Chief/Cortana, or the Forerunners?) - 2:25 in the video - Jen Taylor voice acting as either Cortana or Halsey (most likely Cortana in my opinion), she says "I'm not doing this for mankind". What is "this"? - 3:19 in the video - a shot of Infinity and a powerful fleet surrounding it, consisting of Marathon-class cruisers. - 3:33 in the video - a shot of two Phantoms being annihilated? By a sphere in the background similar to the one we saw in the E3 demo. - 5:10 in the video - a shot of (presumably) Captain Del Rio of the UNSC Infinity; confrontational with Chief. The big thing here is, Chief clearly turns to face Del Rio with a hint of threat; it looks like Chief is confronting a superior back, not something we're used to with John's usually ice cool nature. - 7:14 in the video - a good section of video showing Chief and Cortana talking about her mortality. Chief mentions getting back to Earth to get her to Halsey, but we know Halsey is locked up near Installation 03 on the top secret ONI research station Ivanoff. - 7:43 in the video - Cortana struggling with a flood of warning and error signs. - 8:11 in the video - Cortana apologises for her outburst, flickering red, as Chief, Del Rio and (presumably) Lasky look stunned. - 8:21 in the video - Cortana recognises a Forerunner symbol for Reclaimer (tie-in with Mendicant Bias's fragment on The Ark sending Chief here?) - 10:08 in the video - Chief walking out on Del Rio, his superior. O.o - 10:13 in the video - Chief jumping off a Ghost like a badass. Sorry, had to include it. - 10:18 in the video - is that Halsey?! She lookin' old. Does this mean Chief visits her at the Ivanoff research station? - 10:33 in the video - eerie moment as Cortana says "Don't make a girl a promise you know you can't keep". Notice the contrast with her Halo 2 line "Don't make a girl a promise if you know you can't keep it". This time, she seems sure that Chief will be unable to hold whatever his promise was. Ok that's all. Speculation 1: I think there's a definite link between this decision that Chief/Cortana will make that people won't like, the scene where Del Rio was angry with Chief, and the Cortana line "I'm not doing this for mankind". I'm not sure what but I'm certain these points link up. Will add more speculation as I think, please do the same!

I don't view 343's canon as the same canon in Halo 1-3 or any of the books pre-GoO. The bricks laid in that canon are not being remembered here in Halo 4, or in Cryptum, etc. I have no doubt the game will be good when not directly correlated to events prior.
The forerunner novels connect to "The Flood", GoO,IRIS, and the terminals which were all bungie canon. IT is the best reinforcement and canon web to date.

 • What would there be to remember in Halo: Cryptum? It's a new insight into the Forerunners, revealing plenty of juicy details that we didn't know before. What would be the point of going over old news anyway? However, if you want to place some links between the two trilogies then here's a few similarities: 1. Halos 2. Arks 3. Shield Worlds 4. Forerunners designed to stop the Flood -- Though nothing like this exists in the original trilogy, the Sentinels proved useful against the Flood as they're non-organic and non-sentient. 5. The Didact -- he's mentioned in the terminals in Halo 3. Remember, the original trilogy primarily dealt with the human-Covenant war. And its conclusion. [Edited on 09.04.2012 12:24 AM PDT]

 • What? Everyone seems to be getting different previews of the book when they go on amazon.com. What does Prone say about the Forerunners and Humanity? Any mention of Didact or Requiem? [Edited on 09.03.2012 5:29 PM PDT]

 • The Forerunners do resemble humans even Prone addresses this in the thursday war. They are just different as adults due to mutations, which are not natural. The rings were managed by lifeworkers.

Forerunners wear combat skins even the civilians. They live in them majority of the time hence why they live so long. The furniture they have is all they need because it can grow to anything they want it to be. Their homes grow with them as well, so all your reasoning's for not liking it already have an explanation in cryptum.
Sorry. It's been a while since I read Cryptum. My bad.
But still, half of the doorways we've ever encountered throughout the Halo games would be too small for the Didacts or any Forerunner reaching up to their height. Imagine any of them trying to make their way to the Control Room or Cryptograph, etc, it would look ridiculous, they would have to teleport everywhere. I really do wonder how the environments and structures will look in the scenes where the Didacts is present in Halo 4.
In Bungie's games the Forerunners were supposed to be about human sized and for the most part human in general. 343 went in a different direction, so the Forerunners are a bit more alien/different than humans now. Also the rings were likely manned by mostly life workers. I could be wrong, but they wouldn't have a problem fitting through the doors we've seen in previous campaigns on Forerunner installations. It would make more sense that the rings would be manned by builders, but being that they are pretty much Promethean sized they'd have difficulty moving around enclosed spaces. This is part of my annoyance with some forerunner class sizes being ridiculous. [Edited on 09.03.2012 5:22 PM PDT]
Posted by: Old Salty27 We still don't have a lot of details on the layout of Requiem. For all we know the planet could have multiple layers inside of it enclosed in slip-space bubbles like Onyx. As one poster suggested the possibility of Requiem being the Greater Ark, that might not be far off. If the planet does have multiple layers encased in slip-space bubbles the Greater Ark could be inside Requiem.
That could be a possibility. A quick google, and I found the picture I was looking for (picture!). I imagine it like a round onion. •
Posted by: the real Janaka
Posted by: UL7IM4 G33K 4. How in any way is this artifact the "biggest Forerunner artifact ever"? I mean, we have Onyx, which was an ENTIRE PLANET. And then we had the Ark, which was basically a small moon and THEN SOME. Then there is the Dyson Sphere in Halo Wars which, again was an entire planet. It seems to me that 343 has lost all connection with the Halo universe and doesn't care. And even then, since when was "bigger" better?
And then some, indeed... The Ark might not be spherical, but it's still able to muster up a lot more mass than a regular moon. As for the MDS within Onyx, Halsey says that it is 300x10^6 km in diameter, and.. I'll just use wiki as a source instead of looking it up in the book...
Although Dr. Halsey calls it the Micro Dyson Sphere, the Sphere is 300 million kilometers (or approximately two astronomical units [1 AU is 149,598,000 km]) in diameter on the inside. The Micro Dyson Sphere's star has a spectra and energy output slightly smaller than the dimensions of Sol.
If Requiem is larger than that, it's fairly -blaming!- large. It would rival a gas giant in mass. Concluding that 343i believes that "bigger" is better is pretty reasonable. I can't for the love of James Mason, understand why they didn't settle for the Onyx MDS when writing the story for Halo 4. Especially now when the seem to be bringing everything that was within it TO Requiem.
We still don't have a lot of details on the layout of Requiem. • I never understood the reason for such a dramatic increase in height for the builder and warrior mutation. If the mutations, at least for the warriors increased their mass/size to double that of a normal forerunner it would make more sense. The wild height these mutations incur has got me scratching my head. I'd imagine a newly mutated forerunner would probably be annoyed at the prospect of having to buy new clothes, furniture + ceilings and doorways would become a the bane of their existence. Can't find my copy of Cryptum, after the brevet mutations are prometheans proportions in line with their height or are they walking giant, lanky twig men of doom? I know Didact's friend stationed on the forerunner ship around the prophet homeworld looked like the hulk, but I don't think he was average for a promethean. [Edited on 09.03.2012 4:49 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Old Salty27 I still think making the Didact 15 feet tall is a bit of a goof, especially if the average Forerunner is Spartan sized.
It isn't a goof it is sticking with the canon. In cryptum Anton worked out his size to be about 15 feet from the information given. He is a promethean and the leader of the forerunner military, thus he is the best of the best. The Master Builder is about the size of the Didact as well, so as you advance in your rate your genes get enhanced as well. I don't think Lifeworkers got taller though and we have nothing to say on the miners.

 •
Posted by: grey101 You also have to consider the average forerunner being infected which i suspect would be spartan height.
Oh, checking Cryptum again you might be right there. Bornstellar's Mother and Sister are around 2 metres; about 6.5 feet. His father's twice that height, but he's a higher form. I suppose if the Prometheans are just the lower caste Forerunners who were infected, it's plausible that they're the height they are. I forgot they're not all the size of the Didact.

 • I still think making the Didact 15 feet tall is a bit of a goof, especially if the average Forerunner is Spartan sized. Think about how difficult it is for someone who's a giant to interact with everything that's made in mind for an average sized person, I'd think the Prometheans would have the same issue. Having him 10 feet tall or even a head taller than the Chief seems more reasonable and practical. 15 feet, even for a forerunner is really, really big.

 • With the flood of new info and spoilers from the new vidoc I don't know what to think. Though Frankie's comments on the mystery behind the origins of the Promethean Knights has got me interested. I'm almost worried the new Forerunner book might reveal too much and spoil some of the game. I'm officially no longer on the fence about this, I've already got the game pre-ordered. A Hero Awakes blew me away. So many questions to be answered. Still not convinced the Didact is really a villain, at least not the big bad 343 has been hinting at.

 • The Didact was the Leader of the forerunner military and a Promethean. Pretty much the best of the best, The forerunners at the end of Primordium were mostly lifeworkers and some warrior-servants. I suspect there will be more forerunners to be composed from the final flood assults. You also have to consider the average forerunner being infected which i suspect would be spartan height. But then again these are just machines and don't depict forerunner size.

 •
Posted by: Wolverfrog But wouldn't they they be larger, then? Unless they were Manipulars when Composed.
Maybe it was like what happened to the Necrons? Unless you were a soldier or lord before bio transfer, you were just shoved in a (comparatively) crude body. Maybe the knights are just lower ranking forerunners while the 'proper' Prometheans have yet to be seen by us.

 • They were just put into a mechanical body. You saw the new vidoc right? Didn't you look at the prometheans and think about the flood? Those odd stubby worm like arms, some of the concepts even looked like piles of goop. They also have this odd organic look to them and even go around roaring and such. Frankie implied that their origins would be explained and interesting. So i think this is a good bet. Thank you.
