Seventh Column Council

Taken from the recent "History of the Seventh Column" article.
Q: People think of Bungie as just Halo, but 7th Column is the most old-school aspect of the community, where do you see it going in the future? A(Yeroen): In the future I would love to see the 7th Column become much more organized. With organization comes the ability to pull off bigger and better things--bigger FanFests, bigger fan films, whatever. We've considered imposing high level organization on the 7th Column in the past, but always held off. As much as we'd love to be at the forefront of this project, we believe it will only be successful if it is organized from within, by its own members.
Ok, well I suppose we should get to work. Sounds like bungie really wants us to setup some sort of governing body for the seventh column. Might be best to get this started now before halo 2 hits and were all too busy fragging each other. So how do we do this? Should we model the SCC after our democratic goverment and have a president and advisors? I don't really know. What are your ideas? (i know we've had this conversation in the past -- but lets recap). [Edited on 5/6/2004 2:31:32 PM]

 •
Posted by: antman Celenon, seems to be on the rite track. People in chapters should be able to vote. The only thing I seem to question is who who would Bungie pick to be in the Council. their own staff, devotees on the forums......???
Who gives the best bribes... examples would include cookies, brownies, or "other gifts" from hot moms.

 •
Posted by: goweb Elections probably wouldn't happen. Bungie would probably just pick people.
Yeah, you're right. Bungie would probably have to pick. The reason why I set my election parameteres around the chapters and their occupants with the officials "running the show" was because of the huge drop in chapter support B.net has been having. GameJunkieJim made a topic on revitalizing the chapter situation in these forums and how to bring more people back. I thought that under my election plan we would get more thriving chapters while *hopefully* getting more competent people to vote. In the individual chapter voting part it would've been the chater creators that would've moderated his/her group. The officials would only step in if needed. But if noone like the idea, I'll scrap it and keep thinking of more.

 • Damn, sounds cool! I have a council within my own group and it consists of the most active and trusty staff. And then we have meetings on the forum and discuss subject about our group. I think you might try that in a bigger form.

 • Alright, after 10 pages of posting maybe we should compile all the positive and negative info into one clean post to know specifically what we need, want, and must keep out of an idea like this. Here's my general idea: This is on elections. Now, if this has already been talked about and decided upon then I am sorry for the inconveince. But here's my two cents. I believe that a mass message should be sent to all the chapters when an election comes along. From there, it would be the chapter creators' job to enforce the voting on thier members. Specific info can be sent back to the "officials" on which groups have submitted their votes and which have not. This would be a much more efficient way of gathering votes from the forumgoers and would also inspire more people to join chapters thus making B.net much more organized. People would want to join chapters (and stay in them) because whenever an election came around the would want to get their vote in; only by staying in a chapter religiously (not leaving) would you know when an election arises (because they would be spontanious events which their dates would only be known by the "officials".) You see, the "officials" wouldn't publicly state when an election was taking place. They would ONLY send messages to chapter creators and the people in the respected chapters would get to vote. Anyone that isnt in a chapter would be totally oblivious to the fact. To advise new people of the fact that elections are only done in this fashion, a sticky could be posted in one of the forums telling everyone that to be informed of a new election you must join a chapter. This would let people know that there are elections but only by joining a chapter and sticking Those are my ideas and I hope they help.

 • Ouch, this one was dead before my time. I've seen a lot of opinions on this thread, but I think that the SCC should be for promoting the Bungie Community, in a decidedly more off-line stance. We have a lot of tools for the safeguarding of B.net, and creating another system for dealings online is wanton problem solving, and an auxiliary we don't need. Fanfests can be established, on a much broader scale. We can have actual events for the true Bungie fans, sanctified by the Council. I think the council should work as a grassroots team of members actually working to enlarge and enlighten the Bungie fanbase, not just policing it.

 • Thank Yoozel for my current actions, as he has pointed out the current state of Hotness with the chapters may merit a rekindling of this thread. In case you don't know -- I do this when the need arises. I am JIM The Benevolent Bumper [Edited on 10/23/2004 5:18:43 PM]

 • I know. This thread had a large idea. And a good one, at that. This thread did go hand in hand with the revitalization. We will need a council for problems, and this shall be the one to solve it.

 • Is there any particular reason this dropped the sticky? I realize it kind of went off topic, but I think that this and the Seventh Column Revitalization Project kind of go hand in Hand. I'll throw a post in the aforementioned thread, with a link to this, just so it doesn't get completely buried.

 • Perhaps its a little too late for me to chime in, but I'll do it anyway. To whomever thinks having a single "leader" rather than a council is a better idea, I say this: Individuals can easily loose interest in the Seventh Collum (as I have... But I'll still make suggestions). Its happened before. If one person is put in charge, there's a very large chance that that person could suddenly stop doing what he was appointed (NOT elected) to do. If we have a group rather than an individual, if one looses interest, the governing body can still function. And all people elected to this council should have equal power because of that fact. Anyway, what will this council actually be doing (specifically)? Or has that not been determined yet?

 • There's a slight problem with that. You can't create chapters right now. The 7C is on it's last leg, which is breaking. Wait until the new hotness for chapters.

 • Should i make a chapter for this? Send me a message if I should. I would make forum and database dedicated to this and would make the chapter joining open so that all can come and voice their opinion.
