How many Elites are there
I am not the greatest Halo player and have tried 7 times to get through the "Keyes" level and kill all the Elites but the Achievment doesn't pop.
How many of the tall mean looking dudes are there?

Some spawn indefinitely until you progress through certain areas. It can become quite ridiculous at times, believe me. Lots of special operations elites are hidden before you must escape in the banshee. I highly recommend using a walkthrough to be 100% sure. Be paranoid like me and you'll get it first time.

On Legendary at the end of the level there were about an extra ten that would only spawn if you walked from one side of a door to the end, it took ages, but I'd say that there are about 50 Elites in that level.

OP is looking for "the rest." After you clear out all the downward, straight-forward Elites as you descend (normally), you'll be facing the Banshees with the cosmos to your right. After taking these guys out, all would seem clear. But if you go hard left, there's a doorway that leads into a narrow hallway. Following this will take you to a group of nasties. Clear them out, and you've got the achievement. I know this, because my sop in the day was to just drop down (from level 2), and Rambo it into that exact hallway. (The opposite side from which the "standard" approach leaves one.) Any way you cut it, it's a tough fight.

Usually one of them jumps off if you chuck a grenade.[/quote] No but there are two right there also. I was talking about when you are about to jump off the ship. BTW if you didn't know this OP, you can grenade jump across to the hangar to kill these elites easier.

Before you jump into the pool of coolant, there are a couple of Elites there.

A lot. You should flip the switch in your mind to literally go hunting. Search EVERYWHERE. Right before you take the lift back up to the ship, those elites in the circle like to hide in the lake of coolant if they jump off. I found 2 hiding there. They won't even attack you, so you have to find them.
