Grenade Launcher 101

By now we all know how awesome the Grenade Launcher is and how much butt it kicks. Yep, it kicks a whole bunch of butt, but today I'll show you how unfrigginbelievably useful our beloved ProPipe can be if you know how to use it properly. To aid me in my quest of informing you, I have prepared a little fotostory. Imagine this scenario: You are being shot by an enemy sniper and pushed back into cover. If you peek out for too long, the enemy will take off your hat with ease. Seems like a desperate situation and guess what, your trusty Grenade Launcher is the desperate measure! Seek out your enemy, pop out of your cover and shoot a Grenade right in his direction. Remember, you want to hold the trigger down to perform a perfectly timed detonation right under his family jewels. The only problem is, you can't really see where your grenade is because you are behind cover and can't peek out. You probably know by now that the ProPipe has this very handy feature of letting you know the distance between you and your grenade. But how do you know when it is in the vicinity of your enemy? Let's have a look at the display that is attached to the side of the ProPipe. It shows you the distance and status of your primed grenade. Ok, so as we have seen before, while the grenade is airborne the display will show you distance and status. When the grenade approaches a player (friendly or foe), the display will give you additional information about the amount of entities inside the blast radius. Notice the skull with the x1 next to it? That's the signal for you to let go of the trigger and blast your enemy into nirvana. Mission accomplished :D But wait, that's not it! There are more possible applications for this feature. You could plant a grenade near a lift to observe player movement and warn your team about any incoming hostiles. I bet there are way more uses for this and I would like to hear them from you. Give me your ProPipe tactics!
Posted by: BravoZulu That EMP blast the grenade gives off? Same as any other EMP hit, it kills a vehicle's mobility instantly. Great for bringing down Falcons and Banshees to jacking level as well as disabling Ghosts, Wraiths and any other ground-based vehicle. Take care, as the vehicle can still fire.

Posted by: scmitar1 Be careful, because I think dead bodies count as entities.

Posted by: Lacrimor I'd recommend aiming where they're going to be, because you have to compensate for the time it takes for the Grenade to travel. Also, it's clearly noted in the Reach manual that this is a medium/long range weapon, (not quite as long range as a Sniper Rifle though) therefore you can use the emp the same way you use the plasma pistol. I wouldnt reccomend that because ammo is rare, and it's a lot more fun taking out groups of enemies. Sword Base is fantastic for this weapon, aiming at walls, bouncing them around corners is just awesome-brings back memories of the Magsec handgun from Perfect Dark. Oh yeah and you can hold the charge for the grenade, effectively turning it into a proximity mine. I don't use that though because the Reload time for this weapon is pretty long and my "mines" usually get destroyed by grenades, however I can see some fantastic scenarios of using this in Infection or CTF!

Posted by: Llionboy4 you forgot the main thing, bounce a shot if they are close, only aim high if desperate or aiming at an opponent who is running for their lives(a bounce will slow the grenade and it won't catch them). if you do it right, people get pissed.

Posted by: ATuin Minor When fighting characters like jackals, try to aim the grenade in primary mode so it air bursts behind them, nullifying their shields.

Posted by: MATCLAN Regular detonations pack more of a punch than manual detonations but are obviously less of a utility. But if you want to destroy vehicles use the EMP first to stun them then unload with the regular grenades for more damage. Also use the normal grenades for groups of enemies as the blast radius is bigger.
Mythbusting evolved
Posted by: danoob You might want to see this, and research on it a bit. I have yet to test it out for myself, but with a better explanation the Pro Pipe might impossibly prove even more useful!
I tried this and it didn't work. Here are pictures: I aim at my enemy and the reticle is red. He starts moving slowly, but steadily. I shoot while the crosshair is still red. The grenade travels and I keep my reticule on the opponent. The grenade misses even though I kept the reticle on my enemy and it was red throughout the entire process. I tried this several times over different distances and with both firing modes. I also tried to track land vehicles aswell as airborne targets. It never worked Myth busted. ...for now. Feel free to test this yourself. UPDATE:
Posted by: CabbagesnKings Actually, that thing on Halopedia was partly right; there is a tracking system, but only for the Falcon-mounted grenade launcher. As far as the individual launcher goes, your information is spot-on. Good stuff.
tl;dr There's a skull icon in the Grenade Launcher's display that shows the amount of players in the blast radius. [Edited on 05.27.2011 10:03 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: RigaTony
Posted by: RC Clone Hey Rigatony; What inspired you to make this informative thread? I saw one once about Active Camo that caught my attention, but this one blows that one out of the water. It has lots of explanation, example pictures, and a guide. Now the only problem is getting to the entire community of REach players so they'll stop wasting shots on Powerhouse and Sword Base by using the normal fired mode.
Your Response here. Shortened for people that scroll
Well said. It really seems like there are very few community members like you around these days. I wish every post was as well thought out as yours, but I guess I'll count my blessings any time I see a post that is half as well written as this.

Now the only problem is getting to the entire community of REach players so they'll stop wasting shots on Powerhouse and Sword Base by using the normal fired mode.
I honestly don't know. I guess I sometimes get this spontaneous boost of "I GOTTA DO SOMETHING AWESOME!" and then it usually turns out awesome. I could have never done this thread on command. It just came to my head in its entirety. I just wrote it down and took pictures. I believe pictures are very, very important when explaining something. For me, a picture tells more than thousand words ever could. I made very positive experience in the past with tutorials and the use of extensive pictographical explanations (I don't know if that makes sense grammar wise, but it sounds awesome). This time around I thought that it would be interesting to incorporate something that would keep the reader on track and wanting to read all of it. That's why I chose to mix the information with a humorous short story. This is also my first thread to receive such a great, positive resonance from the community and I found it crucial to let them be a part of this tutorial by implementing their ideas into the OP. Another thing that encourages me to make such threads is that it feels like a real accomplishment. Everybody can make a quick troll or complain thread and get hundreds of replies in the matter of hours. This is lame and doesn't contribute to the community at all. It is what made this community go downhill. In the future I would like to see more creatively crafted threads filled with information. But not only this, I would also like to see more honesty and respect on the forums. Too many people exploit the anonymity and push their egos. I'm doing my part and I hope I can inspire others to do the same. Oh and the most important part about making threads is that you should always do your best. If you think that it sucks or don't like the way it turned out, don't hit the submit button. And NEVER make a thread just for the sake of making a thread. Only create one when there is really something that you think is truly worth sharing with the community.

 •
Posted by: DE Onslaught lol i am in love with the pro pipe good to see it getting some attention. to all you doubters of its epicness check out this rendered clip http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=8029554&player=Oo 0nslaught oO my best work with it
Killtacular with the GL = Win! I love it and pick it up all the time, but I'm still working on being more efficient with it. For some reason, I always seem to release the trigger a hair too late on the manual detonation when I see the skull. But I'm definitely getting better and I get a lot multiple assists when I EMP a whole team bunched together in yellow lift hall of sword base. I had a game the other day where I picked up the GL with a very specific plan in mind and everything worked out perfectly for me. •
Posted by: Gyro231995 Another really cool and all but unknown trick: 1. With grenade launcher equipped, press on the zoom button (right stick). 2. Look at your target. You should see a distance reading at the top. Remember that distance. 3. Zoom out. On top and bottom of the grenade launcher's reticule are 2 rectangles. Disregard the top one. 4. Instead of aiming right at the enemy, aim above him, and use the distance numbers on the bottom to correlate with the distance you found earlier. http://s838.photobucket.com/albums/zz305/gyro231995/?action=view¤t=reachNoobtoob.png
Fixed for easier use. and thanks. In the future put and in the beginning and end of the website address to make it a link. [Edited on 03.09.2011 6:39 PM PST]

Just wait for them to defrost and then let go of the trigger.
I find it really hard to place a dormant grenade near an armor locker. It always bounces off. Do you have any tips? Does hitting them directly help?
Try bouncing it off the floor in front of them in a way that it also hits them. That should slow it enough to land at their feet.

 • Love the GL and love this thread! :D never noticed the fact that the GL tells you when enemies are near so thank you! Sword Base is arguably the most effective map for the GL, multi kills in the yellow lift are priceless. Also, using it like a mine launcher in yellow lift is FTW. So awesome to have a mine waiting for someone as they fly out the lift.

GL grenades detonate on impact with their plasma shield, killing them instantly.
Your strategy works perfectly for single Jackals. If you are facing a group of Jackals, however, you should indeed try to place the grenade behind their wall of shields to maximize the damage. Otherwise one Jackal will absorb a great amount of the damage and the others might survive.
I routinely get multikills via direct impact. Manual detonation yields a much weaker explosion. Shooting EMPs behind them tends to result in the Jackal patrol evading outward, spreading out their formation; making a multikill impossible.
Oh yeah I didn't make myself clear. I meant an auto explosion grenade to maximize the damage. EMP grenades won't deal as much damage but as RC Clone pointed out that's a great way to stun them.

That is most useful when you have teammates to take them out when their shields are down.

I guess I'll have to switch up the way I play in BTB/Invasion now. GL loadout FTW (even if it doesn't have Sprint/Evade :[)

 •
Posted by: RC Clone I love using that against other players. I have killed so many players by launching them off the edges of maps with that weapon. When I was talking about the splash damage I was trying to contrast it to the brute shot, which could still kill in the same amount of shots when you landed them near the enemy, unlike the CR.
It works exceptionally well on the Spire. There's always a guy DMRing down from the edge. It's so easy to blast them off. And yeah, now I get what your point was. The CR is indeed slightly different than the Bruteshot.
