Getting over the hump
With the exception of my ghost (286) all my equipment ranges from 294 to 300. I have been grinding Vanguard Strikes popping secret coins trying to stockpile exotic engrams for the day I hit 300. But I have yet to see a single piece over 300 and I am lucky to improve a piece by 1 every 30 strikes or so.
What is the best option to get over 299? I prefer something that can be done solo or supports matchmaking. Should I do heroic strikes instead (I have heard the drops aren't any better)? POE? Are there specific quests I can do?

I'm in the same place you are! I've done most of the normal raid one time and I've got to 299. I've been stockpiling exotic engrams as well. The day I hit 301 I'm gonna have (hopfully) a tone of 310 exotics that I'll most likely infuse into my gear! Lol

4 RepliesIf you were on xbone I would help you with the nightfalls. I've been soloing most of them recently. Rewards are not very good anyway. Don't be intimidated by the raid. Just keep trying groups till you meet the right group or right fireteam leader. They're out there.

I would suggest playing all the way through the crucible quests to unlock the crucible nightfall rewards. [spoiler]i really think you should try recruitment for the normal, then hard raids. That really is the best way.[/spoiler]

I was at 298 on my hunter. Blasted through IB on Monday in 2-3 hours. Dropped a 310 ghost and a 318 MG. Warlock- 314 helm and 316 ghost Titan- 308 gauntlets and a 312 ghost. The rewards are real in the IB.

If you are playing solo, iron banner is really it... Or solo the nightfall.

Normal Kings Fall, all gear will be 300-310, lfg can be hit or miss but if you'll get exp and ultimately get better and boost your light, nothing to it but to do it

Thanks everyone. A bit disappointing. My options appear to be: A- Wait for the next iron banner and grind the same PVP mode over and over again B- Join a raid without the support of a bungee supported LFG or match making tool. Wish they would add matchmaking and proper awards to nightfall strikes. Or provide some reasonable alternative to PVE based advancement for the 290s.

Honestly the best and surest option requires trying to LFG or connecting with some people doing hardmode challenge. But you mention solo, so I recommend Iron Banner. Level 5 rewards (per character, so you can get up to 3) give you a high level armor/weapon and a 310 ghost. Also some chances to win such gear between matches. I've played nearly every IB in solo pickup games.

Exotic sword if you haven't got it already is 310. Iron banner drops 310 class item at rank 3 I think, as well as other drops at rank 5 and at end of matches. Trials of Osiris has some good drops for doing the bounties which you will do easy in a couple of hours even if you don't win a round. Just need a couple of other players who are likeminded. Iron banner got me over 300 and I really do struggle at PvP (and pve, lol).

Normal raid and trials bounties get you 300-310 gear. Beyond that is hard mode raid challenges guarantee a 320 drop of some kind depending on the challenge that week.

Sadly i have experienced the same problem, you need to raid in order to get your light up. However, if you are a great pvp player iron banner can drop 320s and trials of osiris gold and silver tier packages can drop 300+ legendarys and 310 exotics. Also, nightfalls will mostly drop 300+ gear. Thats how i got my 310 zhalo supercell. Find a raid team made up of your best pve friends, or even find a strong group thtt knows how to do it and your light will skyrocket.
