The Real Issue With Rift for Iron Banner

I've heard some praise but mostly disdain for the choice of Rift in Iron Banner. Playing Rift in Iron Banner is some of the least amount of fun I've ever had playing this game since launch. I support Bungie trying new game types out in Iron Banner, but this run's choice of Rift brings something to light that I think is an oversight. While some points can be gained by acquiring kills, the most points comes from capturing/running the spark and igniting the rift. Most people I’ve played with in the matchmaking system don’t really guard the spark or rift that well, seemingly focusing on kills. This is likely because almost all the Iron Banner bounties require kills to accomplish. No bounties Lord Saladin offers on a daily basis require you to down an enemy runner or run a spark to a certain point or even score with the spark. This seems counter-intuitive to the intended gameplay for Rift. So instead of a game where people strategize and actually cover each other (which does happen on the rare occasion), you get games where people are racking up kills and dominating the spark spawn. If you replaced some of the bounties Lord Saladin offers with Rift-related goals, then I think the focus would shift enough to have a more enjoyable playing experience across the board.

  • Destiny is for me mainly a fun FPS - i get a selection of guns and I shoot stuff. Including racing events, jumping puzzles and Rift (which seems to me a bizzarre blend of two almost exclusively North American sports "American" football and basketball) does make the game marginally less enjoyable. Having said that I did enjoy playing IB Rift this time and even managed to ignite a few Rifts, but I would much prefer Control again in future.

  • I have to agree. There should be some points awarded for protecting the spark runner and being near the enemy rift when it is ignited. I tend to let the hunters carry the spark due to their increased agility and work to plow the field to give them a clear path to the rift.

    I don't know mate, I REALLY enjoy Rift. It brings a different focus to Crucible where instead it's a shooter, it becomes something akin to a sport. Different play styles is what will help keep this game alive. Also, in defense to the bounties, acquiring a score of 2500+ in a win bounty is best achieved through running the Spark.

    • I agree with everything but the last part. Simply because, as you stated: Getting the top score requires you to carry and deliver the spark. The end result is that you end up with a team of players all trying to hog the spark to score, some of which have no business trying to run the spark. As a result, your team is more likely to lose, and no one gets what they're looking for. So honestly, making Rift-related bounties is just going to compound the problem. IB Rift was a mistake to implement.

      • Rift stacks the deck for good players playing in teams. If you were one of those, it was great. If you were an average solo player, you hated it. It is a good idea to try new things. It is a bad idea to stack the deck even more in favor of good players.

      • I've hated almost every minute of IB this go round. Normally, I have 3 characters to rank 5 by Sunday. I'm having trouble getting up the desire to finish one character. IB this time is just a chore and most matches seem to be a blowout.

      • Agree with you there - worst IB ever. I have no desire to get another of my characters to rank 5 because it's simply awful playing games that can so easily be one sided. Never, ever, make Rift IB again. Or at least make it easier to slowly grind rank by cashing in medallions or carrying more of them and change the bounties to match the game type.

      • I love destiny. I am an addict. IB rift is an abomination. the other issue besides what is noted in this string is that teams can be relatively even, but one team scores the spark 3 more times then another and then the teams are split apart. This IB has been garbage. If Bungie does this again, Destiny goes in the trash can.

      • I have enjoyed this IB event but not as much as the previous one. I agree that there should have been some Rift based bounties but I have to acknowledge that not everyone is good enough to be a spark runner (including myself). I think that the one bounty with "Top Overall Score" pretty much requires multiple spark runs but the rest have been distractions from the event goals.

      • Just to clarify, I don't have an issue completing the bounties at all. And while the regular Crucible bounties do work in Iron Banner (because Iron Banner IS a part of the Crucible), Rift bounties are only ever available once or twice a week. And it's only 2. I have 2 of my 3 classes at rank 5, so it's not impossible. My point is that the bounties offered by Lord Saladin don't foster the gameplay that Rift seems to require. And I also think future Iron Banner bounties should encourage the gameplay that the chosen game type requires. I love playing Destiny because it's fun and this is the first time where I overwhelmingly felt like this was a chore. I don't have to play Destiny, and I don't need to play Iron Banner. But I want to continue to play Destiny and I want it to be fun, whether it's easy or hard.

      • Sums it up in a nutshell. Well said. People playing kills rather than objective. Not much fun. Achieving Level 5 was a relief rather than an accomplishment. Usual shyt rewards though: Didn't see one decent drop for anyone along that torturous journey either. I got a 306 chest and I'd say that was the best piece I saw.

      • I never comment on anything, because I am very open minded and sometimes things in life are tough to accomplish. That being said I could not avoid comment about what a terrible idea Rift Iron Banner was. Play Clash if you don't want to make it Control, but Control is the only game that gives people who are not skilled a chance to do better. Rift is difficult and not fun. Control has three "Action Zones" that spread out the bullets coming your way, while Rift has 12 players already to unload their entire clips on the same circle. Also, even as a team event, the only point is to get the Spark. Strangers will not share opportunities to do so.

        • I agree that rift shouldn't be in IB. The games are so one-sided. I'm average in the crucible, but I played around 17 games of iron banner and only won 2 of them. that's complete BS as opposed to winning every other game in control and clash.

          I like IB Rift. It gives people who aren't as good at PVP a chance to get the top score gold bounty and 2500 point daily. I think IB should alternate between Rift and Control each month. What I don't like are the loot drops. They have been terrible. It has honesty given me no incentive to play IB next month after all the work and no reward this month.

        • Good post. It is an objective PvP game mode so have more related objective mode bounties, not just for Rift, but for ALL PvP objective game modes. Leave the kill type bounties for Clash and Rumble modes.

            • I have played IB for 3 days long and I haven't received any IB weapons. Never. Only 5 hunter armors and 4 boots. I guess there is something wrong with the mechanism of this. I have enough to receive blue 265 weapon or something . IB is my only source to get better equipment/weapons (I don't play raids), I don't like rift mode I have lost to 3 days to get nothing. I got level 5 an sincerely for the first time I don't want to play Destiny anymore..

              • Your point is big part of the problem that is a massive oversight. They are rotating the daily bounties which is good. The loot system seems to be working. But then you add in that.... Matchmaking is broken. Red bars are everywhere. Limited spawn points on the maps lead to spawn camping. They are still sticking with a 5 loss coin linit. And it all adds up to equal an extremely frustrating banner.

                I agree 100%. This has been a frustrating experience so far. Just grinding away to max out my characters so I can be done with it.

              • The games feel really one sided. Either I get in with a large fireteam and we stomp, or I'm the one getting stomped. There's no balance whatsoever in the matches. Breaking up teams doesn't work either, since the same thing happens next match. I'm also still seeing tons of red bar players whose lag makes the losing streaks even more frustrating. It's also extremely annoying to watch the worst player on your team get the best gear game after game.

                100% agree if some bounties were rift related games wouldn't be so 1 sided
