On Microtransactions - are they really all that bad?

Hello everyone. I've been wanting to address this topic for a while now, so here it goes... A few weeks ago Bungie introduced the Eververse Trading company, where you can "trade" your silver that you can buy for new emotes (but you still can't trade with other players.) Cool. They gave players a free starting point of 400 silver to be used. You could get two blue emotes, but if you wanted a blue and a purple, you've got to pay a little extra. BDobbinsFTW talks about how this could start a cycle of continuous purchased here; http://youtu.be/kLUDTpSs0Sk (whether or not you agree with him he has very valid points). I think many people wouldn't buy all of the emotes because there's no way to have more than 4 emotes at a time, so there's little incentive to have all the emotes for a lot of players, but it's still a possibility. To get into the main point of this; are these Microtransactions really that bad at all? The answer is no and yes. No because if they are just cosmetic then it's in a "safe" spot. Yes because it is an attempt at getting more money from players, and it has a very real possibility of becoming something more than that, something ugly. Yes I know that the price of games have not changed in a very long time, and sometimes more money is needed in order to reflect the changing economy, but have we forgotten how much money they've already gotten? It's not like Bungie is hurting for cash. Here is Activision's stance on MicroTransactions: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/destiny-microtransactions-and-expansions-can-co-ex/1100-6431944/ (originally found on this post https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/170368602/0/0) This scares me. This screams "we have plans." To be fair, I nor anyone else knows what these plans may be. We can speculate for days and never know until they actually do anything. But when using the information we have on how they've done other things (DLC priced higher than what it should have been, European, Australian, etc. players paying way more than US players) it is a very real possibility that more than just cosmetics will come into play. And I am sure we can expect higher silver costs for items as well. This is the reason why me and so many others cringed at Microtransactions being in this game. Because we are scared of what this has a possibility to turn into. We don't want this game to take a Payday2 route, we don't want this game to continuously milk its players (yes even the ones who continue to buy expansions while some of us decide to break away, we don't want you to get screwed over), and we don't want Microtransactions to fully cross-over to the dark side. For now, Microtransactions are sitting in-between the green zone and yellow zone, so they're Ok. If you want to spend your money on these things then fine. No one can stop you. I recognize that you can do whatever you want with your money, so I ask that you recognize others can do whatever they want with their opinions, as long as they don't insult or be immature. As a side note to add on to that, although I usually believe my opinion to be fact, which we all do and it's why we all argue, it is still just an opinion. You don't have to agree with me, you don't have to like the opinion, but I do expect you to try and show respect because I'd like to show the same to you. It's about time this community unites in respect, even if we don't all necessarily agree. Thanks for reading. - N7 Edit: my topic has completely disappeared from trending. Someone wasn't happy!

  • Alrighty, finally finished reading this. Was a good read. My thoughts on the matter are this... Free to Play games rely on micro-transactions to get by and I'm totally cool with that, mainly because all of the game's content is generally 100% FREE which has been a growing trend for PC Games. In fact, I usually take a great deal of interest in what their Cash Shops have to offer. Likewise, most of these guys don't dance around the bush with you. If you want something in specific, you can just buy that one thing, not spend more money getting a bunch of crap you don't care about like in Atlantica Online. Monthly Subscription games are dead as far as I'm concerned. Guild Wars was honestly the final nail in that coffin. Buy to Play games are the standard. You buy the game and you're good. Now...as far as micro-transactions go for B2P games? PC Games? Eh... Console Games? No... Console Games already require you to pay a monthly fee for things like Xbox Live. Likewise, console games also ALWAYS have this Paid DLC stuff which is basically already a form of micro-transactions as far as I'm concerned. Generally speaking, PC Gaming is just way cheaper by comparison these days. My other gripe with console games having micro-transactions in general is because they really don't NEED to be there. Its nothing but the company looking to draw in EXTRA profits, a clear sign of corporate greed going unchecked. PC Games have a similar issue, but because there's just so much competition in that market the companies really can't afford to be ticking off their players. People can very easily say "screw this" and then head off to another game. Especially with the advent of F2P games which typically offer more in general. There's a reason Destiny isn't on the PC. It just wouldn't be able to survive there. It would hurt their overall sales figures because of all the competition and how easily accessible everything is. Meanwhile, the market for the console is EXCEEDINGLY limited still and people usually don't possess the wide variety of experience that PC folks have. So its usually easier for companies to "get away" with screwing over Console people. That's just my 2 cents on the topic, though.

The micro transactions in Halo 5 are the way they should be done, since you can earn the currency to use them by just playing the game. The items for sale are actually useful rather than completely useless dance moves. The most ridiculous thing introduced in gaming since weapon skins. Cosmetic BS is only the top of the iceberg that will ultimately sink this Titanic Piece of S**T.

Good or bad depends on how they use micro transactions. There is no denying that micro transactions are becoming the new thing in gaming, as developers and publishers are realizing that you can make way more money from them, than they ever did with DLC. If they are used in way for cosmetic items, like COD, no problem really. But if used to assist or give some advantage in game that would be too much. It will be a double edged sword though, since with micro transactions all excuses stop from Bungie. With MT the fan base is going to come to expect more for their money, like a working PvE and PvP balanced game, and a story with content.

I was fine when people were coming forth from within the company to say it would pay towards free dlc but now that activision says people have paid for both so well charge for both I'm not a big fan of it. I haven't and won't pay money for cosmetics but if it's not going towards the game and it's j sit extra revenue for them than I'm very disappointed

      • They say it is so we can get free dlc. Not holding my breath on that one. When all these other awsome games come out and the destiny community is gone where do you think they will make up there profit?

          • Yes they are bad. It always starts at cosmetics then it gets warped into something else. In game transaction need to stop now.

I believe micro transactions in a paid game...never mind a paid beta game...shows the true intent of a company that has already made BILLIONS from the halo series. It tells me that bungievision are being either petty, or they shot themselves in the foot so bad with the release of destiny that they are really hurting for cash due to low sales of tdb and how and now ttk. And apparently they are shooting themselves in the other foot again judging from all the flak they are getting from implementing micro transactions...never mind implementing player trading, optional matchmaking, carry over of year 1 gear, dedicated servers...you know a sign that they are listening and care about the quality of game and gamer experience. Bungievision suffers from shortsightedness...they don't understand the end game. Make a loyal fanbase that will give more money in the long run with their continued loyalty. They are more concerned with the short sale and we all know what happens to businesses stuck on the short sale. They don't understand...you have to give to get. Hence why I'm giving them a reminder...a BOYCOTT Cause the billions from halo, just ,aren't enough!

              • As they currently are, only cosmetics, they're not a huge deal. But I don't see it staying that way. At this point, I'm not touching anything that has Activision writen on it, and the way Bungie is "fixing" this game isn't doing anything to convince me to come back. The patterns this game is showing tells me the microtransactions are going to go down hill real quick. Slowing down the grind, the RNG system that I honestly thought couldn't get worse, until it did. The complete lack of straight answers when Bungie tries to answer questions from the community. I see the Eververse suddenly carrying timesavers in some form. Weapon parts packs, strange coins, engrams, time limited boosts to RNG odds and money drops. The would-be pay to win list goes on. It's a matter of when, not if. I dare Bungie to tell me I'm wrong. Because, the community will hold them to it.

                • Fair enough. You didn't really state much more than worries for the future, which is what many of us have. Personally I've chosen to go with the more hopeful outlook. A game adding extra things to buy does not scare me, it excites me. Especially because I really wouldn't mind seeing some really cool shaders for purchase. Especially with that breast cancer shader going around. I would love to see Bungie create shaders, sell them, and donate all the money to charities Yes, pay to purchase guns or armour would be a bad thing. But trust me on this, they are 100% aware of the fact that it isn't something the majority want. If they do decide to add them, which is unlikely, they know they'd instantly piss a lot of people off. I'm looking forward to the future of this store, I have high hopes and I've just found out my Canadian credit card actually does work overseas, so I've finally been able to buy some. The grim acceptance shrug is now my favourite. The one point I would argue you are wrong about was the price of the game for different countries. Halo 5 was a good 40$ more expensive here in Australia, same game, totally different economies. You can't use that as a slight against the company when minimum wage is 7-12$ more in Aus than America. All we can do is just wait and see. Though the super negative posts about it does more harm than good. So thank you for being constructive.

                  • I disagree completely with what you said about cosmetic micro-transactions being okay. Here's why- Cosmetics used to be used in games as a sign of achievement. If you did some secret thing, or showed some skill in an area, you received a cosmetic as a reward. You can see this in destiny with the implementation of shaders and emblems as rewards for raid gear, and rewards for faction leveling. These cosmetics are not a sign that you spent cash. They are a sign that you played the game and did something cool, that most players won't do. Instead, game developers now treat them as a cash cow. Those emotes could have easily been put in the dlc as achievement signs for doing several activities. They could have even been used as Easter eggs for the player to discover. Could you imagine how cool it would be if when your whole team died during the raid, you received the slow clap emblem? It would have been funny, interesting, and would have really added something to the game. The Halloween event could have awarded a legendary mask for each player, with the skull mask being a unique and special reward for the people who completed the quests. The dances could have been given to the player, or awarded for killing several specific ultras while wearing a jackolyte. This would have turned this event into something fun that we could have really enjoyed, instead of being a cash cow in disguise intended to part us with our cash.

                          • Keep them cosmetic and im all for it even shaders i dont care. BUT Sell any gear or even a strange coin and im done and this game is done and will quickly turn into a worthless app type game where only those who are constantly spending money are getting anywhere. Any skill needed to obtain items will be overcast by those with an endless bank role.

                          • If the micro transactions ever go to anything other than cosmetic fluff, I'll truly leave this game in the dust. I just hope Bungie pays close attention to their players on this.

                            • Personally, not to worried about it. If Bungie wants to charge for some new emotes that's okay. If they offer weapons and armor then that will change.

If prices for the game vanish then sure, why not have micro-transactions to purchase quests and bounties to lead to awesome loot.

                                    • Bump for actually stating an opinion professionally. I see why some of the community is worried about this. It has the potential to go there, but so far things have been exactly what has been advertised: cosmetic. The glimmer or weapon exp items do nothing when it comes to progression, and the spawn changing thing is cosmetic. All of those were timed anyways. As long as they stick to what they have been doing, then I won't be worried by what it might be. I think they meant events like the Festival of the Lost when they were talking about their "plans." Which would be perfectly fine. My two cents.
