Halo Books Vs. Halo Game series

I see alot of the fanbase has taken quite an intrest of detail of the Halo novels. That's great, I'm glad your reading and using your imagination to picture such wonderful stories. There's a schism between the Books and the Game series though. Would someone please inform me which started first.....the game or the book series? Thank you. Although it is fun trying to make sense of everything...trying to relate everything to the novels. Just stop. Please. No. No more. What I mean is...yea, dig up obvious info and chat about it. I just dont like the fact that everyone seems to think they are "Prophets" and think they know everything that SHOULD be in the upcomming game. Example: The number of spartans on the ground of Reach should be the exact number posted in the books. Some particular movies are not fully based on it's novel (or comic) but it's ok! Some movies turn out great and some turn out bad. Same for games...if you stick to a movie story line and create a game on that...the results are pretty bad (Ex: Transformers revenge of fallen, Spiderman games, etc...) Point is.....I hope this new game does not follow through on everything on the books. I would like for this game to have new suprises and not everything i think I know about already that should be in it. Let it free, let it become what it is. I'm quite sure millions of people will buy the game and will not be disappointed over the game not following a Book.

 • The first book, then Halo CE Then the other books then Halo 2 then 3. So book came first, but was based off of the game.

 •
Posted by: ares23 if i remember correctly bungie had the books made and the first one came out like a month before the first game so they were both made around the same time give me sec to check it out though im not positive about that
You are correct. TFoR released about a month before Combat Evolved did... but as we all know, Halo was in development for quite a long time before that, and saw many, many changes along the way. Anyway, on the subject of the in-depth discussion of novels: Thing is... while other franchises might not stay directly true to their novels or other pieces of content, Bungie has always tied the games and the novels together as best as they can... sometimes in the most incredibly detailed and microscopically intricate ways that took years for people to even take notice of (example: Opog's "Johnson is a Spartan-" Theory, which was created long before Johnson was confirmed to be a Spartan by the HGN and Contact Harvest). In the end, Bungie can exercise their right to take the game in a different direction than the novels, but we've always used the novels for the finer details of the Halo universe because the games don't usually deal with them (except for in subtle places like the Terminals). If you don't want to see all of the novel talk, then this probably isn't the forum for you right now since we really have no information on the game. But in hindsight, novel discussion makes sense here... because Reach's story began in the very first piece of Halo content ever released... the first book, and is a completely untapped resource of Halo storytelling material. In either case, the novels are a reliable source of information from which we are able to base a lot of our well-accepted theories and ideas.

 • I think that Bungie will stick to the canon, but will have a side story that will occasionally intersect with the novel's story. It'll also possibly help cause some of what happened to Fred 'n friends (like when Church went back in time in RvB).

 •
Posted by: SplitScreenLag Well the games came before the books. The books were created to expand the cannon and make more of a lively universe. In that area it defiantly succeeded. I agree with you though. I want there to be surprises in this game. If they go on the books word for word then nothing will be a surprise and it will lose alot of the "wow factor". I think they should keep the key events of what happened to stick to the cannon. The battle of Reach for example. Other than that I want to see a new and fresh storyline with twist and turns.
Thank your for your ideal support. I do hope this turns out to be something diffrent that we are all expecting....Well...not another RTS...(not that it's bad or anything) but something very new to our eyes. The Beta release will give us an insight on what to expect and i'm sure Bungie will answer to a fraction of our "reasonable" calls on the game.
