Dreadnaught is not the same as a new planet
I still play Destiny. Willfully changed my whole attitude from loot pursuit to relax and enjoy. Excited for the Taken King, but still not convinced, and may never be, that it is worth $40.
One of the things I think everyone liked about vanilla Destiny was the atmosphere and detail of the planets' patrol areas. The sky boxes, the weather effects, the day-night cycle. To this day I'll still stop on a patrol or daily heroic to take in the scenery. Bungie did a really good job with the planets. And with the vanilla game, I got 3 planets plus a moon.
So..... Why no new planets for TTK? Oh I know the marketing line about your new explorable space that is the Dreadnaught, but, does it have sky boxes? Does it have a day-night cycle? Or is it just like the interior of the Moon?
If this is a concern for any other player besides me, there is only one solution: wait to buy the Taken King. Wait a full week. Let some reviews come out. While $40 USD isn't much money, if you give it to Bungie and Activision blindly, you are not helping to improve the game. Instead, you are rewarding them for under-delivering. I don't know what y'all are expecting for $40, but if you think what has been delivered to date content wise is underwhelming, stop giving them your money. If you're happy, then disregard this entire post.
For myself, TTK is closer to a rip-off than it is an experience so packed with quality content that I'd be a fool to skip it. I'm excited for the potential of the Dreadnaught. I'd be so much more excited for the Dreadnaught plus Mercury and maybe a moon of Saturn; that would be closer to the content we got for $60 USD... Someone please tell me why I shouldn't have that expectation for a $40 expansion? Or should I just make Luke Smith happy, shut up and throw my money at the screen?

4 RepliesIf it makes you feel better, i'm 90% sure the next patrol is going to be Europa (Jupiter's moon). An iced location. They always knew they were going to do the Dreadnaught after vanilla Destiny. Same as they are now working on Destiny's 2016 and some 2017 content. It is true what you say about escenery and the Sky-boxes. So far we haven't seen too many locations in the dreadnaught where we walk outside of the ship and see the rings of Saturn. That's a great sky-box in my opinion, but I think almost all of the dreadnaught will be inside the ship. As for price, i don't believe we are paying for new locations. We pay for more new cool stuff to do... And it is more fun to do it in new places. If people believe that's not enough for them, then don't bother to buy the expansion and like you said.. Wait for videos and reviews ;)

6 RepliesMercury should have been unlocked along with the dreadnaught. That would have then left no questions on the amount of content we were strong for $40. I guess we will see in a week what we really paid for.

1 ReplyThe content of TTK is almost exactly what we got in TDB, a lot of people are overlooking this fact. Was TDB worth $40? Of course not, but people are paying for almost the exact same amount of content. Suckers.

You're absolutely right. The Dreadnaught is nothing like a planet. And here's why: You see, the IAU (International Astronomical Union) has clearly defined a planet by the merits of 3 criteria. Those are: 1: that it orbits a star 2: that it "has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium" (in layman's terms, it has to be round. 3: that it has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit. So lets grade thd Dreadnaught's planetary qualifications. 1: The Dreadnaught, though it is within the gravitational pull of our sun, is not in fact orbiting it. With a trajectory perpendicular to the average elliptical movements of other celestial bodies, it simply cannot pass this first test. 2: the Dreadnaught, although large, is sadly not spherical, likely due to its dietary constraints and genetics. It isn't curvy enough to be considered a planet, which could negatively affect its self esteem, seeing as the standard set by so many cis-gendered Guardians and their unchecked Light-imbued privilege is that only spherical celestial bodies are worth their time. But fear not, Dreadnaught, with your approximate size relative to Saturn, you could easily pass as a Dwarf Planet. Just ask Pluto. 3: unfortunately, the Dreadnaught fails this test too, seeing as its immediate vicinity is littered with the icy rings of Saturn, the ruins of Tomb Ships, and the carcasses of Awoken floating forever in the vacuum of space. The Dreadnaught tests dreadfully on all accounts, though its naught for the lack of trying. Comparing the Dreadnaught to a planet is like testing all kids based on the same multiple choice standardized test. You have to accept that there are some things that the Dreadnaught simply cannot do, like skyboxes and sparrows. But it might excel at other things, like public events, exploration, and finger painting. Share the love, not the hate, OP. -

I bet that takes quite a while to do. As for content, one new playspace is a bummer. If however they can offset that with quests and just more scenarios to play then I won't mind at all. It's not always about how much or what you have but what you do with it, no?

3 RepliesFor me ttk is just like the rest of destiny. Under developed and short on content. Destinys been out a year. Ttk needs to have more in it to be worth 2/3 a game. I don't get just from what they listed is in it that people are still buying it. 60$ for most games is fair. For destiny? NO. I played arcade games on the boardwalk that had more content and story.

2 RepliesI am disappointed in no new planets being made to explore. A dlc should not cost that much and that's why I am not paying for it. My husband is instead. ^_^ I love the game and enjoy playing around but I'm not too sure on TTK.

1 ReplyIts a hype and nothing more. What you chose to do with it is only up to you. I plan on exploring it and go from there. As far as the public events in it. It will get boring real quick, just hoping the open public events are actually worth doing and not going to be the same public events as far as seeing the same one over and over. Its like how the public event on the Cosmodrome with the fallen walker is always the same public event. BORING....

4 RepliesIt isn't a planet. But it's the same size as the rest of the patrols. (even if it's slightly smaller, it DEFINITELY is beefier with court of oryx and other player activated activities. There will be skyboxes, just.... probably not what we expect. Come on, Bungie is known for their skyboxes. Also, it's orbiting Jupiter, and, it's not like we can go to jupiter or anything. You should know why that is. It's a brand new area and I'm happy. Finally, on price points.. HoW and TDB were $20 each. TTK has arguably more content then both combined. Sooo... If anything, i'm surprised it isn't $50. (In all seriousness, I wouldn't buy it for $50, but I'm just saying that from a simple perspective, $40 does seem about right. Maybe even a little cheaper then I would expect.)

Why do you want a new planet? All 3 we got plus the moon were empty and had nothing interesting to do once you reach level 20. I would rather have more strikes and raids than a new small empty planets

16 RepliesPeople have to understand too, Destiny is going to be around for 10 more years. They're not going to make every planet right off the bat for Destiny 1. More planets and such will come with the future titles.

1 ReplyThe answers to your question at the end. Because it will still be countless hours of enjoyment for the exact same price as dinner at red lobster. To expect a new planet/skybox in an expansion is your vision of the game, not theirs. They already rocked that. Let them try and give you something else that you can admire.
