Vault Space Doubled and I'm Pissed. Here's Why (Read This) Edit: I Was Wrong/Constructing a Permanent Solution.

TL:DR I made an error. Didn't go back to confirm before writing. Oops. My apologies for stirring up a pot without a proper foundation. I'm going to leave the original post in cause I feel like editing out my error is...cowardly. Take it how you will. Skip to Edit 4 for what I think is a proper solution to solving the vault space issue. Edit 2: Before you begin to read. From some of the comments I'm getting the impression that folks think that I don't like the update so let me clarify before you get to the post. I love the vault update. Not only are they doubling the raw space, but they've added in a system that can be expanded upon If we ever need vault space again (Which we will). Need more space? Add a page. I'm ecstatic about the update. I mother-blam!-ing love it The original reason for spawning this post which it seems folks are missing is that in my opinion, this update should have came earlier, and I feel like the problem was solved a long time ago. The way it is being presented, as selling point for the The Taken King (even though you get this update whether you purchase or not), suggests that Bungie needed something to convince people to buy the next DLC. This game has been in development for 5 years. By design they knew people would want to hold onto things. The vault should have never been a problem, and I don't think it was right to blame last gen for not releasing a proper update once players reached a point where they needed more space. They chose to develop for it. Also in my opinion, they didn't even need the vault as a selling point in the first place. With so many awesome things coming with TTK they should have put this in as soon as it was done. But on to the post. Original Post: Watched the stream from start to finish. Beginning to god damn end. A lot of exciting stuff was displayed and showed off and I'm starting to get very excited for the DLC. They're adding more ghosts, completely revamping the leveling system, adding what seems to be a lot more reasons to spend more than Tuesday playing the game. No more caps on marks (yes), No more having to wear the ugly class items from the factions 24/7 (yes), and no more year one legendaries. (Tear) Exotic Blueprints (yes). Shader/Ship collections (yes), and whole mess of other interesting shit. All aboard the Hype Train! But the highlight of this showcase was vault space. Congrats guardians. All the constant posting is paying off. The vault space is being doubled. More than doubled even if you're counting raw spaces. But as soon as I saw the vault, I flashed back to their original excuse as to why they couldn't increase it any more than they did initially. The old consoles couldn't take it. The 360 and ps3 were to blame. This update split a -blam!-ing rift in between new gen and last gen players, completely scapegoating a significant portion of Bungie's playerbase. But look what we have now. Double the god damn vault space. So unless I missed something, last gen is getting this update is well. So I have a question. What changed between then and now that is suddenly letting last gen handle such a steep increase in space. What magical piece of hardware was installed into 360s and ps3s? Or an even better set of questions. Why in the hell did Bungie feel the need to outright lie about it and why wasn't this increase implemented earlier? I just want answers. Still looking forward to the DLC though. Heads up Guardians. Edit 1: Okay let me be a little more clear. I understand that splitting the pages and tabbing the vault lets the last gen consoles handle the new update. I want to know why they didn't split the pages and tab the vault in the first place. There was no reason to blame last gen consoles for a small update when the answer to increase it like they are now was always there. That's why I'm irritated. Edit 3: Okay I messed up. Hugely. That's what I get for posting out of frustration. Bungie did say the original vault update was a short term solution, and that they would continue to look into it. Here's the original weekly update. I want to be the first to acknowledge my mistake, but feel free to rip into me cause I'll admit I deserve it. https://www.bungie.net/en/News/News?aid=12707
Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term. Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen. This had to be accomplished by a team who is simultaneously working on future content. We opted for making sure that players would have enough slots for all Exotics from Launch through House of Wolves - thus the largest increase in slot space is for weapons.
Even so. I still believe this should have been released earlier, rather than wait till they were in hype mode to let us know of their solution. Edit 4: Constructing a Permanent Solution. Through all this another user suggested a wonderful idea. It seems Bungie has provided a solution to the vault space problem without even realizing it. Those beautiful ass terminals. When it comes to shaders/ships/and emblems, we no longer need to store them in vaults. Neither do we have to store our unused exotics if we want to keep them. This new system is probably the greatest thing to happen to item storage since the introduction of the mobile vault. So why can't this system be used for legendary gear? Even rare, uncommon, and common gear? Having a defined list of everything there is in the game, having it permanently unlocked when it drops, and being able to withdraw it at will for some glimmer would free up even more vault space for those of us who will continue to lug around our year one gear for as long as we can. Like I've said in a previous post, I'm not deleting my fate bringer. Plus, when it comes to normal PvP there's still a reason to hold onto old weapons you've grown used to since reforging is getting ready to phase out. I also think this would help ease the pain of not ascending year one gear. My personal itty bitty gripe with it is that by not ascending the gear and having no way to re-obtain the gear, Eventually I'll have to get rid of the things I don't use going against my collectors mentality when it comes to these types of games. I like having all the items, even though I may never use them. Ever. If I had a list of things I've obtained over time, and was able to withdraw my shadow price every time I wanted to have a nostalgic pvp moment, I think that could solve the vault problem as well as make everyone a little bit more okay with not being able to ascend things. Thoughts?

  • I have been saying these same things. Yet we are the bad guys. I agree. This could have been implemented back in TDB. A lot of what we now see should have been in the previous first year.

  • But how could they have pushed DLC more if they didn't lie about that in the past. Bungie lies, A LOT. They save the good stuff for their DLC.

    • Absolutely. I called this a while ago that they were going to "release extra vault space" as a bait for a new expansion. I knew it was NEVER a last gen shortcoming. People that believed that are quite gullible.

    •
What changed between then and now that is suddenly letting last gen handle such a steep increase in space.
Doubling the vault space was always part of the plan, just like the 3rd subclass and ghost skins. (Why do you think the spots for the latter two were in your inventory from the beginning? Bungie couldn't "fix" expand the vault space earlier because that would have taken away a feature of The Taken King. Yup, Bungie and Activision purposefully sold us a defective product last September.

    • Oh come on, WE ALL KNEW it was a total and complete lie that they couldn't increase vault space because of old gen consoles. Really, with coding like that, Bungie couldn't make a game of tic tac toe on the computer. Like Bungie or not, they are not forthright. It's simple. You aren't getting answers you want. You're getting the ones they want to give you. There's a difference.

They also lied when they stated that new subclasses would not be added. Claimed that the extra slot was left over from the alpha build. why lie? It only makes them look stupid when the truth comes to light. Its all about $$ with them.

There is one reason and one reason only this wasn't done already. It was the number one thing asked for. Make people pay to get it. It increases the likelihood that people will be more inclined to buy TTK. Why give away something for free when you have a fanbase that will "throw money at the screen". So yes, their excuse was a lie. It was to make money, nothing else.

I agree.. That's Bungie.. They say they can't do something then 3 months later they do it?? Then they render all your gear previously earned to worthless. Seems like a great bunch over there in Seattle..

        • So is the new vault space taken king only? Did they really just sell us vault space? If vault space isn't taken king only then why is it apart of Taken King hype reveals?

          • You had no reason to back track on your original post. We were lied too and you felt angry. This is a normal human response to being lied to. I felt the exact same way. I had even conceded in another post that it coukd be a reason for limited vault space in destiny as other game developers had cited memory and storage limitations for doing so. It is clear now this was bs. Dont cave to the fanboy trolls trying to make excuses for bungies lies. Its obvious to anyone that they clearly mislead and withheld their real reasons for limiting vault storage. The thing is in other games like mmos it is there for many different functions such as immersion or to challenge the player to resource manage and encourage them to make difficult decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. It can be there to encourage trading and player interaction, although not applicable for destiny its certainly the reason eso limits inventory space. It can also be limited to enable them to sell more vault space to the players. It can be used as part of the feeling of progressing in the game and getting bigger and stronger. They may also limit space so that inventory size doesnt get out of control so players dont give up in frustration. Destiny had the opposite problem and well players gave up in frustration. Im sure theres other possible reasons Ive forgotten point is it was no accident destiny had limited vault space it was their by design for a particular purpose. We can speculate based on the reasons other developers give for limiting inventory but bungies reason of last gen limitations was clearly not it as these limitations have not changed yet miraculously somehow they can increase it. Its not like paging is difficult to code. They already had paging in the game. Others with experience in coding had said all they needed to do was add pages and it wasnt difficult to do. So now a month out from a $40 dlc release theyve finally cracked it and able to do it. What a joke! What gets me is they dont even need to come out and explain it. The fanboys blindly do it for them. It is perfectly reasonable to be angry about it and unreasonable to be told we shouldnt be. Until they give a plausable reason for it not being introduced earlier the best conclusion we can make based on the information we have is that they lied to us. I mean they dont even come out and try to cover a blatant lie with another. Why? Not sure but it seems they dont even need to fanboys will keep blocking for bungie and allow them to get away with treating the community so poorly. We shouldnt be allowing them to doormate us in this way. We shoukd be holding them to account for the lies they have spun.

              • More important question who will need Vault Space now ? Guns weapons etc.. don't posses the importance they had in year 1 . And as year 1 experience thought us well , every Year 2 item will be obsolete in Year 3. So now there is absolutely no reason to keep any guns at all. They increased Vault Space on a time and highly possible they are laughing their balls of to guardians whom still don't realise that Bungie is actually making fun of them...

                • I think they had to change a lot of code to make this happen. It probably was badly designed from the start. This is Destiny 2.0 and I imagine they are working on these changes for quite some time. I think a lot of people don't realize the complexity of a project such as this. Either way, Bungie made more vault space possible, and I am glad they did.

                  • I personally don't think it's enough space. All of my year 1 gear will go into the vault eventually and I'll be out of room. I don't want to dismantle anything because who knows what they will decide to do in the future.

                  • Well to start their original code probably wasn't exactly perfect, and it probably took a while to completely redesign the vault. At first they were probably trying to render everything at once which last gen couldn't handle. Just my guess.

                  • Kids these days have no appreciation into what actually goes in to doing what Bungie is trying to do and successfully doing. Sometimes I wish these games had age limits set on them so that squeakers couldn't post garbage like this!

                  • Eye rolll. 1. The chnages clealrly took a great deal of re-programming of the game's code to achieve. 2. They are still clearly hitting their heads up against some sort of "ceiling" in terms of vault space, by the fact that they had to get creative and essentially create MULTIPLE vaults (the kiosks) in order to accomodate the growth the game. 3. Xbox 360 and PS3 are COMPUTERS. Computers that are basically SEVERAL YEARS OLD (almost a decade old in teh case of Xbox), in a technology envirionment where processing power is still doubling about every 18 months. IN SHORT: Last gen is OBSOLETE technology, so you only make yourself look like a child throwing a tantrum by accusing Bungie of having to lie about running into things that next-gen consoles can do that last-gen ones can't. Seriously. There is JUST no pleasing people around here. Bungie has (again) come up with a elegant----and potentialy long-term----solution to one of the game's major problems...and people are STILL complaining about it.

                      • It's pretty obvious they needed to make significant changes to the back-end to accommodate the vault changes, so they decided to wait and roll these out with TTK. It's not something that can be done overnight. You obviously know nothing about game development or rolling out big changes to live systems with millions of users. Not everything is a conspiracy. Bungie are not lying to you. Things change over time, new ideas get tried. That's all.
