The idea is a bit unpolished, but I've been thinking about something that would appeal to the people who prefer to do PvE stuff like the Prison of Elders, but find it a bit repetitive. So I thought to myself, what makes Crucible so popular? Honestly, the answer was obvious. The competitive nature of the Crucible is what makes it popular. So I took this idea to one of my friends and we collaborated. What about a competitive PvE function? The idea was as follows (I'm going to hit this one thing at a time, so bear with me): We call it The Colosseum. Obviously this can be changed, but we figured it fit. It's basically horde gameplay, or otherwise fighting wave after wave of enemies that are constantly growing in numbers as each wave passes. This is a simplistic idea, but there could be many variations on how this can be done. Maybe there are modifiers randomly selected on each wave, maybe you get two different enemy types (meaning that the Guardians would be caught in the crossfire), or maybe you unfortunately get a boss round. The variation here would make this something new and fun. The Guardians would spawn randomly in the map, be it separate or together. A timer would appear on the screen, which would count down how long it is until the first wave spawns in...but this isn't the only thing that spawns in. Cover and elevation would spawn in as well. However, one of the problems with this could be something similar to the Prison of Elders: the Guardians would find a place where the enemies couldn't go. To stop this, I suggest something like the jumping puzzle in the Vault of Glass. Cover would spawn in and out randomly. Guardians would fight to meet up, then they would fight to survive. There would be a short break between the waves for ammo runs and regrouping, then the next wave would start (without the random Guardian spawns). While something like this would be fun, it would slowly die like the Prison of Elders or any of the raids. To stop this, I thought of what was mentioned above: a competitive aspect. Whilst the Guardians are fighting to survive, another team of Guardians would be doing similar. The two teams would be fighting to last longer than the other team. Waves of enemies would spawn separately, but the modifiers for each round would have to be the same in order to keep a level playing ground. Victory would be determined by how many waves a team had managed to get through, not by the speed of which they're going. So say Team A is on Wave 8, but Team B is on Wave 6. Team A gets flanked, and shot off map by the ridiculous strength of the Phalanax, and thus are eliminated. Team B wouldn't (directly) be notified that Team A was defeated, so they would keep fighting. Once they cleared Wave 8, they would be notified that they were victorious. All this time, Team A would be sitting there watching themselves slowly get beat, but with the hope that Team B chokes and ends up getting beat by a Shank or something. This would prevent quitting, especially if there was a good loot table. Just to add a bit of flair, to give a true Colosseum feel, there would need to be commentators...right? I would vote that the Vanguard (Zavala and the other two (I'm obviously a Titan)) comment on the rounds. Making fun of the Guardians, the enemies, or even each other. They would comment on good plays or how the Guardians are doing. This would be very similar to how Lord Shaxx comments on the Crucible. They could even utter hints on how the other team is doing. This could also be a monthly event, like the Iron Banner. --------- So in a nutshell, if you were too lazy to read this, please read this instead (a brief summary): (I highly suggest read what was above to completely understand this) A competitive PvE endgame function that's a spin-off on traditional horde modes. Two teams of Guardians fight to survive relentless waves of enemies to ultimately determine who's the better team. Whoever survives the longest wins. --------- If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. It would also be nice if you guys could toss some ideas out to improve this. My ultimate hope is for Bungie to read this, and think "hmm...this is a good idea. Let me go consult the other Bungie Gods...". But as mentioned in the beginning. This idea is unpolished and obviously not something that's ready to go into the game just yet. If you guys comment to add your ideas on this, to keep this thread popular, maybe we can get Bungie's attention and make a competitive PvE scene a thing :) Thanks for reading :) [UPDATE 8/14/2015] Original Idea by: Ded Potato The focus of his post was the fact that there would be teams taking it slow and stealth reviving. The idea that we came up with was Guardians having to wait out the 30 seconds to revive, but Sunsingers could still come back immediately...much like the base Destiny function on everything except hard modes. Ultimately, the timer would make the matches run a bit faster. Original Idea by: Advokain This person actually brought a lot of ideas to the table...and ones that actually fit my idea well and improved on it. His idea was to turn it into a race, sort of. A way to make the Guardians light on their toes and always have to switch on the fly. My only improvement on this is that if there was to be a race type situation, then there would have to be a mercy rule. Revives would make it possible for the other team to catch up. And honestly, if you're that far behind, there's the chance that you're not going to survive much longer. This person also brought up heavy, which is something I hadn't even considered and I see no reason to have to add my opinion to it. Basically, make a mini boss drop heavy on a boss round. I imagine that he was aiming for something like the mini boss spawn being announced, and if the Guardians didn't engage it (thus choosing to rush through the ads in order to take on a boss), it would simply go away after awhile. To sway the usage of something like Gjallarhorn, there would be specific modifiers that increased the damage of certain types of weapons (or something like precision shots do more damage), and then the boss could have buffs like void shields and the such. He/she/it said something about announcing how the other team is doing, like when they reach a boss level. This is something I already addressed a bit, but not in specifics. The Vanguard (or whoever Bungie chooses to be the announcer) would say something about it, like "Team A has engaged a Cabal Ultra...it's not looking good" just so the other team would know.
