Hey DeeJ, can we have a conversation about weapons and Legends?

Hi DeeJ (and Bungie!), I'm hoping we could have a conversation about a piece of this interview found at Polygon. Specifically the 20 seconds between the 10:50 and 11:10 marks. I know, this is kind of ignoring the larger context of the interview and everything that's being said there (which I'm largely excited about, I promise!) about players growing more powerful and being drawn forward to trying new things and new weapons. This specific piece is important to me though, and I hope I can adequately express that here. The specific quote that I want to talk about is, "A 10 year relationship with one weapon would be a pretty boring game". First I'd like to say, I think I understand where you're coming from with this. The idea is basically that familiarity can breed contempt, right? That there's a host of reasons Bungie wants to continue making new weapons for players, and understandably would like for players to use them rather than have them languish in some vendor's inventory or unused in someone's vault - especially in favor of something created months or even years ago. Destiny's tagline is "Become Legend" right? That can be interpreted in a number of ways. Bungie's interpretation seems to be that a player's accomplishments are what make them a Legend, and you're not wrong. But I'd like to suggest that this is an incomplete picture of what it means for a Guardian to be a Legend. Zeus wouldn't Zeus without his lightning bolt. Thor would be incomplete with Mjolnir. Arthur would have been just another man without Excalibur. Katniss has her bow, Satan has his pitchfork, Patton had his ivory handled revolvers. The list goes on. I'd like to suggest that a Guardian's weapon can add to and enhance their Legend. (Now, that's difficult in Destiny right now, I'll grant you that. Every weapon in the game already has a name, already has something of it's own legend. Bad JuJu, Invective, Thorn, and many others are part of the Legends that have preceded us. I've got some ideas on how to change that, how Guardians can build their own legendary weapons for themselves, if you'd like to talk about that.) Certainly there are Guardians who would set aside the weapons they're currently using for whatever is newer, but I'd argue that more will be disappointed that they have to set aside the weapons that they identify as part of their own Legend. Can we change this? Can we expand the understanding of what a Guardian's Legend can be? I think Bungie's already on the right track here, allowing existing weapons to be ascended to the current maximum, while still building some highly sought-after weapons like Hopscotch Pilgrim or The Summoner (you don't have an extra one of those lying around you want to give me, do you?). I guess more than anything, this comment about not having a relationship with a weapon for 10 years leads me to think Bungie may not fully get how attached we Guardians can be to our favorite weapons. This wouldn't be the first time either, considering the backlash after The Dark Below, where weapons were concerned. I had hoped that the introduction of ascension for weapons meant Bungie understood player's feelings about weapons, but you can see how this latest comment might call that into question, right? I'm hopeful that this can be a productive conversation between Guardians and Bungie in regards to weapons and what they mean to us all. Thanks for listening and participating respectfully.

  • So, DeeJ doesn't approve of the decade long relationship between me and my pet because it's boring? "Well time to take you out to the back of the barn and put you out of your long, boring existence, my friend. Found Verdict: Guilty!" R.I.P DOGE
