Any tips from pro pvpers on how to get better?

So, I need help. Pvp is something I have become quite interested in and I need help because I'm tired of being on the bottom of the leader board. I'm tired of being made fun of because I suck (yep great community right) I've watched just about every youtube video on how to improve. I've watched all of byf's videos probably 10x. After watching byf's videos, I'd have to say that I have seen a little bit of improvement but I would like to see what advice the destiny community has to offer. Any help is appreciated. Any not so nice comments are also appreciated, as they are like wood to the fire of desire to improve. Thank you. Edit: wow guys thanks for all these awesome tips. I'll make sure I read them all before I play my next session of crucible and see how it goes. Keep em coming. Edit 2: As I'm reading through these replies I'm seeing a lot of practice, playing certain game modes, use thorn lol, radar, map knowledge, and finding my play style. I'll start applying all these helpful tips the next time I play. Thanks again.

  • What weapons do you have access to and what weapons do you use?

  • Find guns that fit your play style. Just because everybody and their mom uses thorn doesn't mean you have to. In fact, I find that I'm in favor of TLW over Thorn, because I am more accurate and have been using it since week 2. Don't be afraid to "go against the grain" and try some weird shit out, who knows, maybe it'll work for you

    • Here's a good tip from an average player. Unless you're fleeing, never run. The easiest players to pick off are those that run everywhere for no apparent reason. Take it slow. Your weapon will always be at the ready. If you die a lot. Stop what you're doing. I'm still guilty of getting angry and try to rush back into the action - those are the games I end up near the bottom!

Since i i first Started playing competive at CoD 4, i pretty much get it all for free in any FPS game. And why is that?, HOURS OF PRACTICE! I think i've been above 3.0 in K/D in pretty much every shooter since then and it all comes from the routine i have gathered :) So how do you get good? Devote your life to a game. Sad but true! P.S Map knowledge and being able to read te other players is key, let them come for you! People do the same shit no matter what game they are playing, and that's rushing in with no brains.

    • Honestly I'd go into control. You can guess where most people will be since, well, they'd be by the control points and you can get more target practice this way. I also hate to say it and I hope this doesn't come off as rude at all but it might, you probably need to use the "OP" weapons. I in no way am "pro" but I do play my fair share of pvp and used to be awful, so bad that I'm still working on fixing my KD to 1.0 bad.. ((but I do have over 1.0 on one character!! Knock on wood)) Back to the point though, op weapons. I started out with Red Death, well at least that's as far back as I can remember, I'd do bad, pulse rifles weren't for me, but it was a good start. I moved up to thorn, I was awful with that, couldn't control the recoil at all, I had to get used to it and then I wrecked. Then I finally upgraded to using Last word. Again, was awful til I got the hang of it. The sucky thing is, most people will be using thorn or last word, so to counter that you either need great gun skill with any other weapon, or to use the same gun as them but be better. As for class most prefer hunter, but I like warlocks. Sunslinger is great and fire bolt grenades with voidfang are op. Just have fun with it, know the right class perks and grenades and it'll be great. Use a Machine gun for heavy so you can get more kills in the long run, use blink and at the start as you progressively get better don't run out on your own, stay with teammates so you'll die less but get more kills with them by your side. Sorry if this is long but I just wanna help!! If you're on 360 I'd be down to play and see how you play and give you some tips here and there or just play to have fun! ! Goodluck! !

    • To start with, play clash, and play conservative, too many teams go into skirmish and control that'll just shut you down. Just sit back, pick people off, use your team mates as meat shields if you will, move behind them until you learn the choke points, high traffic areas and best ways to traverse the map. Once you have those down, you'll want to start getting in there and practicing your close quarters gameplay. If you're not used to fast-paced shooters, it will be quite difficult to start with due to all the people using blink. All you can really do is battle through the rough patch at the start of your crucible life, I'm by no means a pro but since I started this game badly, I got used to the pacing, and I'm generally top of the lobby even on a losing team these days.

    • Play Call of Duty dude . It is the foundation of any pvp game . You experience lags and whatnot just like COD. The best players surpass the cheaters and campers (:

      • Play rumble and skirmish. I used to be sitting at .6 when I first started, now I'm averaging a 1.5 k/d. At first you can't really tell if you're getting better, it just kind of feels like you're getting used to it. I honestly just noticed my first improvement today in IB. On the cauldron, a golden gun popped on zone B and everyone on my team on zone A starts to run but I go up to the doorway and crouch shotgun him as he walks in. A month ago I would've been in that crowd running away getting golden gunned in the back. 2 months ago I probably would've wondered why everyone was running lol.

      • Also, get with a group and communicate. That's the single biggest thing that has helped me. Call out the supers, blade dancer on B, golden gun heading toward the relic, titan rushing our heavy. That goes far. You can shut them down, or one guy take one for the team to try and stop them. Or, the whole team focus fire on the guy trying to steal your rockets. Also call out snipers, guys that are camping, or when to flip spawns, etc..... it goes far.

      • Practice in modes like skirmish, elimination, rumble, and salvage. It forces you to learn maps better and use tactics in a much more cautious way, you learn more from these gametypes.

      • I got way to used to trying to run and gun, if you will. My biggest challenge was learning how to control pace. Too many times I would die because I freaked and starting spamming rounds. Slow down. Land shots, and learn the layouts. I typically avoid high traffic areas, it's a death sentence. I don't care how badass you are, I have reign of terror medals, but you won't go into many 3 on 1 or even 2 on 1 scenarios and walk away victorious without a super or flanking them so bad they dont even know what happened until it's too late. Sometimes there's mass carnage going on and you can slip in and get the kills before they catch you, but typically that isn't how matches go for me. You might get 1, or 2 but usually the radar gives you up and someone will pick you off. Plus fast respawns can put them very near you again, and they may avenge themselves pretty quickly. Remember crouching takes you off the radar. I've ambushed guys at times. Especially Thorn users. They think you're gone, come walking up and bam, shotty to your face. Use supers and heavy ammo effectively. They can turn tides of battle. No need to hold a super forever, but don't use it wrecklessly either. That could be the difference between getting a control point, or not. Just to use one to make a cool clip, isn't helping your team most of the time. The most important is landing shots and getting kills. That guy you drop, may have been on his way to a massive killing spree, or trying to get your mates on heavy drop. Precision counts. If you kill a guy, he can't harm your team for a little while. Those 5 to 10 seconds can mean a lot to a guy on your team. That may be what he needed to cap a point, or pop a super.

      • I'm not even close to being a pro, but if you are shotgunning, don't sprint around corners, and I find that hip fire works just as well as aiming.

      • Couple of things that really helped me are, keep an eye on your radar, and don't sprint everywhere. I'm not that great at pvp but I was a lot worse before ha.

        • If you're playing solo, never rely on a teammate to take action and expect them to kill a person that's nearing your position. You have to be alert and notice everything, stacking in discipline and intellect also helps.

        • Play instead of watch videos and stuff. Consistently use a weapon that fits your play style. Practice makes perfect.

        • The most important thing is the weapon. Stability is everything. ALWAYS shoot to the head. Cover your flanks and always moving. You must know all maps perfectly. Playing with good players (Mexicans are the best in the world). And learn from the hardcore players seeing their streamings or videos.

            • I'm no pro, (last I checked my K/D is a flat 1, bite me) but I can share you some of my usual tactics. - pick a weapon you are most comfortable to use with and play to that weapons range. Use a secondary to cover your primary's weakness. I use scout/shotgun mostly. Pick your fights and make sure that you play to your loadout strength. Don't just dive in and expect to kill someone. This is not COD. - weapon/armor perks. Love that primary you're using? Optimize it by re-rolling it to your playstyle. Use an armor that speeds up your weapon Reload. - radar and map knowledge. Utilize your radar. Know the maps like it's the back of your hand. - awareness. Goes hand in hand with above point. Have a spot you like? Kill a few from there and move on to another spot. Mix it up. - supers. You will die by it. Accept that fact as early as now. It will save you a ton of frustration in the long run. On the other hand, you have yours, use it as you see fit. - watch those corners. Let's face it. Shot gunners are everywhere and they will camp. Be prepared. - classes and subclasses. Titans, warlocks, hunters. Knowing your enemy is half the battle. - headshots. I cannot stress this enough. Practice. - experience. I'm saying this from my own experience and you will have your own story to tell on your own as you play. Don't give up, keep playing. You'll get better. I have shit ton more to tell, but I'm at work and will have to cut this here. If you need a buddy, I'm on ps4. add me up. PSN is the same as my forum name. See you in the crucible.

              • Find a gun and stick with it not necessarily one gun but just a gun type then learn the weapon once you learn the feel of the weapon you will start to improve and once you master one weapon type move to the next a truly good pvper has to be able to adapt if you want a cheap and easy way use thorn but I'll think less of you for that to truly be good you need to master the legendary guns then you wipp be even more powerful with the exotics.
