Bungie: Please Post Maintenance Alerts in "News" too
And not just Twitter.
There's a section in the Destiny app and bungie.net web site called "News". It hasn't been updated since 6/16.
As a result, most people were disconnected at 8am PDT because they didn't see the twitter posts.
