I recently read that out of the UK's 90,000 troops, we could theoretically deploy a maximum of 60,000 at any given time.
Out of pure curiosity I was wondering what the figure for the US is, without resorting to the draft of course.

I'm locking this before it turns ugly.

Depends how the media has changed americas mind
-
Interesting how importnat Deago (sp?) Garcia, a British possesion, is to those plans. That lease for the base they have there must be very important
-
You forgot the 792,486 winged monkeys the US has stored.

Google government search would be a good place to start. this is an interesting read that is semi-related... I just skimmed it thoug, the information you seek may be there.

It is not yet really political, but it really could become so. Have to resist urge of replying politically to post.

You have to be insane if you actually believe that we are nearly as over-stretched in Iraq as the media lets you believe. Oh -blam!- this is political I'm out.
-
Hah, our military is just as -blam!- up as the americans. The soldiers lack all the equipment they were meant to get, half the gear doesnt work properly in the desert and we are cutting the size of it in the middle of operations (not that i support them any way).
Posted by: Socialist They have currently deployed (or nearly have) 100, 000 in Iraq. True they are a bit stretched at the mo. And If britain can theoritically can field nearly 2/3 how couldnt the US field 1/3? Still it was only a guess.
Well two thirds of our forces is less than 2 thirds of the US, we dont have to travel as far, and we are supposedly better organised.
Posted by: Socialist The US is meant to have about 1.5 million in the armed forces isnt it? So I would say maybe 500,000 at one time, if it was really pushing it. And it probably couldnt sustain it for long.
hmm with a total force of 1.5 mil theres no way they could field 1/3 of that at once.. it takes alot of support to keep them abroad i'd have to say closer to 100k if that.

cheers for the answers (all of them :P) - thats a pretty uber force
