Grimoire Card: Mase-5185, 1 (fan fiction)

I included a link above to the original post on our clans page, but I thought I would go ahead and share it elsewhere in the Destiny forums as well. Just a bit of fan fiction that I wrote up where I based it around one of our clan members. The idea is similar in style to some of the grimoire cards (check out The Last Word and Thorn ghost fragments). Hope you guys/gals enjoy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TYPE: Transcript. DESCRIPTION: Conversation. PARTIES: Three [3]. Two [2] unidentified, one [1] Human female [u.1], One Human male [u.2], One [1] Exo male, Mase-4837 [m.1]. ASSOCIATIONS: [REDACTED]; Old Earth; Pre-Collapse; The Fringe; Reboot; Mind Forking; Maintenance; War-Machines; Engineering; [REDACTED]; Mase-5185. //AUDIO UNAVAILABLE// //TRANSCRIPT FOLLOWS.../ [u.1:0.1] It’s an honor to finally meet- [static] [u.2:0.1] Likewise. [audible machine hydraulics] [u.1:0.2] Truly, your work is what made me pursue robotic engineering and study ascendance theory in the first place! It’s taken me years to finally get assigned to this station. I have so many questions! Do you- [u.1:0.3] Oh. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were already working. I’ll just come back when- [u.2:0.2] It’s fine. Stay. [u.1:0.4] Whoa. What is this? A Priority One? [u.2:0.3] Yes. Assigned only a few hours ago. [whistle] [u.1:0.5] Damage looks severe. It must have been one helluva fight. [u.2:0.4] It was. You can read the report here. At least what hasn’t been redacted. [u.1:0.6] Is it even salvageable? [audible machine hydraulics] [u.1:0.7] Wait. Oh, wow. This- [u.1:0.8] Is this..? This is not a battle frame. [audible chuckle] [u.2:0.5] No. [u.1:0.9] I’ve never seen an Exo up close before. Is it alive? [u.2:0.6] Yes. He is alive. Though barely. [u.1:1.0] Is it- I mean, he, turned off? [u.2:0.7] He’s unconscious for the moment. [u.1:1.1] And you can repair him? Even with the fractured cerebral plating and incendiary burns? [silence] [u.1:1.2] Amazing. [u.2:0.8] It will take some time, but yes. Mase here has been, say… a repeat customer. [u.2:0.9] Repairing him however isn’t why he’s labeled a Priority One. Take a look while I hook this up. [silence] [u.1:1.3] A reboot? Geez. I didn’t read his tag initially. 4837? [u.1:1.4] I’ve read some to be in the tens to a low hundred. Why so many on this one? [u.2:1.0] He has an anomaly. [u.1:1.5] A defect from what I’m reading. “An inability to flee, retreat, and or appropriately reproach from conflict even with clear, adverse conditions being present.” [u.2:1.1] In perhaps too simple of terms, when it comes to his flight-or-fight response, he only knows to fight. [u.1:1.6] As you said, a lot of details have been redacted concerning the operation itself. Ah, it says here… “Mase-4837 actions resulted in certain, narrow victory against an overwhelming foe. However, his actions also resulted in the destruction of two Phaeton-class LRv1 Javelin long range jumpships and severe injury to four civilian engineers.” [audible machine hydraulics] [audible clicking] [u.1:1.7] I can’t believe he hasn’t been ordered to be kept offline after all this time. Even with this combat mission rating, he seems to be considered a liability by most of the top brass. They are calling for a full memory wipe, again from what I’m reading, in the hopes of correcting the defect. [u.2:1.2] Oh, yes. They do every time. As you said, however, it’s only most of the top brass. Not all. [u.1:1.8] What does that matter? [u.2:1.3] I want you to go ahead and read his maintenance history there on that terminal. Yes, that one over there. I’m almost finished. [audible machine hydraulics] [u.1:1.9] Almost finished? You haven’t- [u.2:1.4] Go. Read it. [audible clicking] [u.1:2.0] Your work- [static] [u.1:2.1] akin to brain surgery within the system. This- this is incredible. How did you- [beeping] [u.1:2.2] Wait. This can’t be right. He’s been assigned to you for more than half his life span. Every reboot order called for a memory wipe and you’ve only conducted a rudimentary! [u.2:1.5] That is correct. [audible clicking] [u.1:2.3] All you’ve done is repair him. And adjust the strength of his sensory receptors. All these years. [u.2:1.6] The best I could do really. There’s so much we don’t know any more involving our machine brethren. [u.1:2.4] You- are you- I can’t believe you’ve ignored all these orders. Why would you do this? And to have gotten away with it for so long? [u.2:1.7] It’s simple really. This defect, as you put it, I don’t believe it can be fixed. Others tried before and once was enough for me. It may not be a defect at all really, but his choice. [u.1:2.5] His choice?! He’s- it is a machine! Regardless of how sophisticated their systems are, Exo’s are still machines. [u.2:1.8] No. They are not. They are like us. If not more. Especially this one. [beeping] [u.2:1.9] As for why I would do this- you just read his combat and mission ratings, yes? It’s far above average. Stellar, in fact. That’s why he hasn’t been ordered to be shut down. It’s also why I haven’t wiped his memory. He’ll continue to learn and improve. Wiping his memory very well may be the worst thing we could do, despite what the higher powers believe. [u.1:2.6] Y-You know I will have to report this. I respect you, your work, everything, but this is bigger than us. If his memory goes back so far as to the- [u.2:2.0] Oh, it does. He remembers. He was there. [u.1:2.7] My, god. You have to put a stop to this! I’ll- [audible metallic clicking] [m.1:0.1] I wouldn’t try anything stupid, meatbag. One pull of this trigger and you’ll be the one offline. [u.1:2.8] Shit! No, please! Wait. Wait! [u.2:2.1] Calm down. [static] [u.2:2.2] I had you read all of that because it’s best we got it out of the way early. You need to know everything if you’re going to work here with me. With us. The last assistant didn’t work out. [m.1:0.2] Hmph. [audible whimpering] [m.1:0.3] Oh, boy. [u.2:2.3] I know, this is ugly. It’s not what we would prefer to do, but as you put it earlier, this is far bigger than us. [audible whimpering] [u.2:2.4] You’ve heard of the outlying colonies falling dead silent. Fleets going dark right before emergency distress signals being put out. These occurrences are becoming more common by the day. Something bad is coming. [beeping] [u.2:2.5] I selected you, because I saw the research you did both on Venus and Mars. You are tenacious, persistent in your problem solving and I know you’ve studied the sentient species there that predate humanity. First hand. Yes, I know about all of that too. I have access to more than you realize, despite being here in the Fringe. [silence] [u.2:2.6] I could use your help. Apply what you know and see if you can improve what I couldn’t. When you and I are long gone, Mase here is still going to be around. Fighting. Continuing to help protect those who need it most. [u.1:2.9] Sounds like I don’t have much of a choice. [m.1:0.4] You do. [Silence] [u.1:3.0] Alright. When do we start? [m.1:0.5] Now. /...END TRANSCRIPT///
