Just in time for Hatred, an upcoming video game about a dude who goes around and mindlessly slaughters everyone, the video website Twitch announced last night that users will no longer be able to stream games rated Adults-Only by the ESRB.
It’s a curious move by Twitch, which was purchased last year by Amazon for $970 million. Although in practice this ban will have very little effect—very few games actually get an AO rating—it’s clearly designed to prevent people from streaming Hatred, which comes out tomorrow for people who pre-ordered (and next week for everyone else).
Hatred has drawn an inordinate amount of media attention for its shock value, but it’s also become something of an icon for those who have strong feelings about censorship, especially after Valve (briefly) pulled the game from Steam last year. Clearly, Amazon and Twitch don’t want to deal with whatever controversies or consequences may arise from users streaming a mass murder simulator.
Curiously, the ESRB’s website has no listing for Hatred, although the game’s developers said earlier this year that it had received an AO rating.
Booo. Should be over a certain age to be on and watch twitch. Make it so only accounts can see high rates material. Build a fence you -blam!-s not a slide.
a dude who goes around and mindlessly slaughters everyone
That's GTA in a nutshell.
-
reminds me of when Manhunt first came out...

A game about committing mass murder on innocents is banned from a website watched by lots of children? I'm perfectly fine with that. I don't know why people are getting so upset about censorship. That game is honestly disgusting.

Edited by DukeOfStuffing: 5/29/2015 4:27:19 PMIt's not very gory. Mortal kombat is infinitely worse, but it is pretty disturbing on a psychological level. I'd actually probably avoid anyone who actively plays this. Good ban is good.

Just watched some Hatred gameplay. Looks kinda fun but totally not that gruesome at all. Mortal Combat has way more gruesome shit like sick fatalities.

Edited by Wompy: 5/29/2015 1:02:04 AMI watched some gameplay of hatred, I think people seriously overestimated how bad it would be. I don't see how it could be rated AO. I saw much worse in GTA, Mortal combat and other games. If it does get that rating it's probably only due to the context

It's fine to ban them. In fact they should ban them in general. If their is a video game that wants to make you a mass murder, it's hatred.
-
This doesn't affect me at all. There are a lot of children that watch and hitting that "mature audience" button doesn't prevent anything. I don't see why it's a big deal. You can probably watch clips of any of the banned games on YouTube anyway. Who cares if it's not available for live streaming.

What a bunch of pussies. This is what happens when you have a monopoly.

Look at all my cares...
casual
this is retarded. hatred is basically a remake of the original postal game but starring nathan explosion's generic clone and as a twin-stick shooter instead of a clunky kbm only nightmare. it's not even bad.
-
Twitch is full of kids. That being said, if you can't raise your children to be able to distinguish fantasy from reality you should probably be sterilized.
-
That'll probably change in 3 years time when video games push the social norms more and more. Or VR will set it back because all the crazy people.
-
Oh yeah, I forgot about the adults only rating. I haven't seen one in years.
-
Does it really matter? Most people that use and visit Twitch rarely stream anything that isn't popular. There are very few AO games to begin with.
-
There's only a select amount of those games. If I could remember, it was like 4 or 5

Edited by HuhbZ: 5/28/2015 6:03:47 PMWhat do you mean by adult gamers? Like anyone over 21 like Reckful and Sodapop? Or they are going to ban whores like that porn chick that games? Edit: Adult Games not gamers...I read it wrong. Just looked up the story. Kind of whack...but I can only think of a few games that would be banned like GTA
