Ruminating over Raids (or lack thereof)

So a week has come and gone. I decided to give HoW test drive, see what was what. As a pure PvE player, I wanted to see if this thing had anything to offer me. What follows is my take on it and the path of Destiny on the whole. First my bias - I don't want to PvP. It isn't a good/bad thing, which I've tried to explain to my friends who try to drag me in. Don't try to tell me how to get better - I know how. It would only take practice and time to do it. I'm a patient man, I know I can do it. I don't want to, simple as that. I've done enough PvP in my nearly 40 years of gaming. That's dead to me. (Original Atari owner here, if you're curious) In the past I would ignore PvP and play PvE. That worked fine (outside of PvP crying for PvE-affecting nerfs), but the game was fun. A lot of fun. Nightfalls, Weeklies, Raids... great stuff. Sure the raids had problems, but getting on a good 6-man team and playing the raids... that was sweet. Now we come to HoW. What is there for a PvE player who is raid-oriented? Nothing. Nada. Zip. If Bungie's intent is to convert PvE players to PvP-style play via small arenas with constantly spawning enemies of escalating difficulty landing right on your position and shoving you to the center of the arena if you try to post up and hold a spot, then PoE is a good attempt. Sadly, with only 3-man fire teams, clans are being fractured. At least, that's the case for ours. Then there are the rewards. There isn't much worth fighting for through the PoE horde mode. The Queen's weapons are nothing special, and in fact can often be superseded by older legendaries. Worse, the truly good new exotics need to be acquired by, of all things, PvP. ToO to be specific. Elemental burn exotics that are acquired through PvP bounties make little sense as these guns have little value in PvP. The only possible reason to tie them to PvP is to force PvP play. If I'm wrong, please correct me, and Bungie could sure clear this up if that was their way (it isn't). What I can dig up says the Fate of All Fools, the premier exotic scout rife, can only be acquired through ToO. I can't find much info on the shotgun and who knows whether the Vesta will actually make it or not. It's all muddled and confused to the point that for me, this DLC is probably the least defined aspect of the game yet. This part is for sure - if you want to see the Lighthouse or Mercury, you're going to play ToO. As the saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome". If you want what this DLC has to offer, you're going to play PvP and ToO. Now all of THAT aside, I would be just fine, except... raids have been rendered irrelevant by virtue of denying Etheric Light, and Weapons and Armor Cores. Once you have all the old exotics and raid guns, why would anyone want to continue to raid - or more accurately - how does one raid and continue to progress to 34? There are only so many gaming hours in the day, and if you want to get to 34, you have to PoE, ToO, and Nightfalls. That's it. Considering this all before me, I had to ask myself - why do I want 34 anyway? Used to be I wanted to max my level so I could contribute to my raid team. But... if raids don't matter now, why does max 34 light matter to me? Following that thought, why do the weapons matter? If all there is for me in this game now is patrols, Nightfalls, and Weeklies, all that can be accomplished at lower levels. This thought hit me like a brick. I don't even want to go into the stupid vault-clogging farming I have to do to play mindless horde mode so that I have a chance to get weapons that aren't as good as I already have so I can try to take them into raids that will never happen. Sigh... The one and only reason I log on right now is to interact with the friends I made here. That's the only thing Bungie did do sort of right. Beyond that I find the direction of the game anathema to me as a PvE gamer. Bungie - DeeJ - if any of you are reading to this point, it's time to make clear what you want this mess to be. Make it clear to yourselves first, then find someone with enough command of the English language to clearly and concisely communicate to us what you want to see from us. If you want this to be a PvP game, say so, directly. It will save us all a lot of time and hassle. No hard feelings on my part, I'll stop wasting my time. Honestly, I have a ton more respect for companies that stake their claim and stick to it than this aimless mess you have going on right now.

  • I enjoy POE, but your post makes perfect sense. It is like they are pushing pvp. I play pvp 1 out of 25 log ins or so. But this new dlc is definitely going to get me and many others into the crucible.
