Fallen Lore: Compilation of events after HoW. How they fell, why they came to Earth... and more!

A while ago I wrote an entry on the Forums, exploring the relationship between the Fallen, the Hive and the Darkness. In that thread, that became quite popular for a time (you can find it here ), I theorized that the Fallen seemed to be a once-higher race that had decayed. I got that idea because of the contrast in technologies they displayed: their warfare-oriented tech seems vulgar and unrefined, whereas the life-support and transportation tech seems quite advanced. It seems I got that right- but not for the right causes, because in my thread I pointed at the Darkness being the only responsible for their (pun absolutely intended) Fall. After the release of House of Wolves, here is what we know so far (data compiled from the Grimoire and comm talks from Variks and Petra): - The fallen were, indeed, a much more civilized and organized race. Their Houses lived in a harmony of sorts with one another. The Kells held the position of political leaders, whereas the Archons were religious leaders and did not intervene in warfare. When conflicts happened between Houses, there was a Fallen House that acted as arbiter and judge to settle these fights peacefully: the House of Judgement (Variks appears to be the sole survivor of said house). - The Fallen COEXISTED WITH THE TRAVELER for a period of time, before it arrived to our Solar System. The Grimoire entries shows Variks, Skolas and others mention the “Great Machine” and they accuse the City and the humans of “hoarding” it. They seem to have suffered their own Collapse too, and they call it “The Whirldwind”. Why the Traveler didn´t protect them as it did with humanity, we do not know. Either way, the Traveler abandoned them. - During the period previous to their Collapse, the Fallen had grown confortable with their situation. The cards mention that “Ether was flowing”. Ether is the substance that Fallen feed on to sustain their lives. For some reason I also suspect that, the more Ether a Fallen consumes, the bigger and more powerful he/she becomes. - After the Whirldwind (their own Collapse) the Houses temporally begun fighting each other for resources. It is at this point that the political and religious leaders (Kells and Archons) turned into militaristic leaders, basing their rule on force more than diplomacy. The House of Judgement loses their authority here and either retreats, or is practically wiped out. - The Fallen track the Traveler to Earth, attacking humanity (probably in the aftermath of the Collapse). At the beginning of the assault, the Houses were still divided. The Awoken were still a partial mystery for Earth and the Tower at this point. - Finding more resistance than they expected, the Houses of Devils, Kings and Winter join for an assault on Twilight Gap. - Turning point: the House of Wolves (not yet led by Skolas at this point) was about to join the assault, but they were intercepted by the Awoken as they attempted to cross the Reef. The Awoken managed to destroy a vast portion of the Fallen fleet, apparently using some sort of gravitational weapon to draw asteroids into their ships. The remains of the House of Wolves try to organize under Skolas after the previous Kell died, but they were defeated, and Skolas imprisoned in the Prison of Elders along with the Archon Priest, Aksor. The rest of the Wolves pledge their allegiance to the Queen. Without the Wolves and thanks to the defense established by the Vanguard and its Guardians, the Fallen are repelled but the counterattack is not strong enough to drive them away from Earth. Portions of the Houses remain on Earth pillaging what remains. We reach the “stalemate” point between Fallen and Humanity that we were brought into at the beginning of the game´s timeline. - The current status: either just before or right after the Heart of the Black Garden was destroyed, the Nine confronted the Queen about the incursion of the Crows (a espionage unit from the Awoken) into an area known as the Cauldron of Rhea, an area belonging to the Nine. To appall them, the Queen intended to give them a present: Skolas. - Under circumstances that are still not known to us, Xûr releases Skolas, hinting that there is a motive or a reason behind it. Skolas gathers the remains of the Wolves, triggers the revolt against the Awoken and flees with his forces. At this point, the Queen calls us to help her crush the Wolves and capture Skolas. So where are we now? From the Grimoire, it seems that the Queen initially wanted Skolas dead, but after Variks and Petra detected the use of Vex technology by Skolas and his forces, she changes her mind and she wants Petra to capture Skolas and bring him back alive. Why? Perhaps she wanted to use that tech for herself. OR... There can be something else. I am going to thank Baconator119 for this piece, and I quote him: "Skolas went completely crazy because when he was connected to the Vex Networks he could see the future, and he saw that in the future Oryx will come. He mentions the words "Darkness Binder" and "Light Snuffer." If I'm right about the order of the grimoire, after this she [The Queen] contacts Eris and Osiris. With the next DLC using Hive Symbols and being called, literally, "The Taken King", I believe it is save to assume that we will either face Oryx himself or another god in the Hive Pantheon that is much more powerful than Crota". If I missed something, please let me know. But I think this is mostly it. Quite a good story no? Epic, intriguing, schemes… if only we had cutscenes with it! BY THE WAY: Many of you still keep the "Traveler is actually responsible for the Darkness" theory. I know that the Speaker and the Traveler were in doubt in the original version of the game, however, at this point it appears that said theory is non-canon. I have not included any references or consideration to it for that reason.

  • Before I say what I was thinking I just wanted to say that I'm actually happy that the story didn't answer all the questions we had, even though many people who don't like Destiny complain about it. It gives us more to talk about and makes things even more exciting as we learn more. So since we know (or are fairly certain) that the Traveler was once with the Fallen and we have seen evidence that suggests the Fallen were once a far more advanced civilization I was thinking about why the Traveler left them. Now this is just a thought, not really a fleshed out theory but it came to mind. What if the Traveler is responsible for all these races converging but not because it is the darkness but to fight the darkness. What if it has gone to each of the previous races in an effort to create a force powerful enough to defeat the darkness. Perhaps it started with the Vex, seeing as they are machines and so (presumably) is the Traveler. Similar the the Manhunters from Green Lantern, the Vex failed and could not defeat the darkness, instead becoming corrupted but not completely lost. And so the Traveler goes on to the Hive, Cabal, Fallen and now us. If this is true maybe we are supposed to be the people that can finally rally all the other races back to the light to fight the darkness together. That could explain why the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us rather than just abandoning us as it's appeared to have done with the other races. If this is true that leaves the question 'What is the darkness really?' and then also 'What if we can't beat it?' I think it would be really cool if after a few expansions we reach the point where we are supposed to fight the darkness but ultimately fail. Things seem like they couldn't get any worse and all hope is lost. I don't know what I'd like to see after that, maybe something unexpected like the Traveler doing something crazy or someone coming out of nowhere. I don't know. I hope you enjoyed my theory and find it interesting. Like I said I didn't look into it too much, just a thought I had when reading these theories. Any thoughts you have for or against it would be greatly appreciated,

The grimoire goes further into detail about his Vx usings, and based on a few theories of my own and that I have come across, I can almost guarantee that the next enemy or an enemy in the future will be Oryx. I myself have not killed level 35 Skolas, but after piecing together that card with the queens cards about Eris Morn (And an unknown male, likely Osiris himself) I have come to this conclusion. Not to mention some other stuff, if you just sit and listen to Brother Vance mumble he will sometimes mention Oryx, also it is Osiris that is talking about Oryx in the Shrine Of Oryx mission. From what I have read it goes a bit like this: Skolas went completely crazy because when he was connected to the Vex Networks he could see the future, and he saw that in the future Oryx will come. He mentions the words "Darkness Binder" and "Light Snuffer." If I'm right about the order of the grimoire, after this she contacts Eris and Osiris. With the next DLC using Hive Symbols and being called, literally, "The Taken King", I believe it is save to assume that we will either face Oryx himself or another god in the Hive Pantheon that is much more powerful than Crota. My only assumption as to why she would call Osiris is because, lets be honest, he is no guardian. He doesn't follow the light. He is as much part of the Light as he is the Darkness. His knowledge of Vex, Hive, and the Darkness in general likely surpass even Toland. "I fear you have become as obsessed with the Vex as Toland was with the Hive. I've heard your own insane prophecies about pits and dead Hive kings. And of Crota, which now I cannot deny. "

        • Nice summary, though you should point out that the Whirlwind and the Collapse are events that could be separated by millennia for all we know. The Fallen took to space and hiding in the dark, that is when they turned to piracy and mercenary activities to survive, until they found the Great Machine once again. They were surviving as much as searching. Also, we don't know what stage of Earth history they made themselves known to humanity apart from that it was post-Traveller. They may have even arrived pre collapse. Part of the collapse could have been caused by humanity refusing them access to their religious relic (this seems like the sort of thing we would do). Remember how Eris saw the presence of the fallen in certain areas (presumably of their own volition) as "Omnigul is clever, she uses the Fallen against you" (words to that effect) - the Fallen were attacking the Hive there, so they weren't allied and being used directly, they were just manoeuvred into that position - maybe "The Darkness" is capable of that sort of positioning also. Maybe The Darkness "pushed" the Fallen towards us, knowing that conflict would follow? Otherwise I see no reason why an uplifted humanity would not embrace the Fallen as trading partners & allies, pre or post collapse. I doubt that they just attacked out of the blue, I can't help but think that we didn't want to share, or that sharing with the Fallen led to problems, or that something in the nature of the Traveller leads to a mental disorder that causes hoarding, or that sharing with the Fallen would have hurt the Fallen more than not sharing (their religious fervour is clearly greater, maybe the Traveller causes Fallen Psychosis)? Anyway. That's enough thoughts for now.

        • I want to believe that the Traveler had contact with the Cabal as well, as they are marching on ancient orders. They have thus far, until disturbed by us, kept to the Mars and their attempts to gain access to the Black Garden. There is also talk of the Vex 'eating' something on Mercury created by the traveler after it turned Mercury into a Garden World. Whatever it was the Vex went as far as to uplift all life on Mercury to hold on to it.

Your "by the way" at the end is a little premature. The theory that the Traveler had a direct role to play in instigating the Darkness, or is in fact the Darkness, is still supported by several converging lines of evidence, from the grimoire (The Darkness: Black Garden, I believe) to this involvement with the Fallen (it's a strange coincidence that they suffered a Collapse as well after the Great Machine arrived, and at least highly irresponsible for the Traveler to have moved on to humanity knowing there was an external Darkness to chase it), to the fact that this scenario is highly similar to several stories of previous Bungie games, going back to their very first game (there are some interesting threads on the Destiny subreddit about this), to simply the fact that the extensive damage on the underside of the Traveler is highly suggestive of the possibility that the last Golden Age humans finally stopped or incapacitated the Traveler when it was about to wreak havoc on the Last City (which explains firstly why it's hovering over the Last City and secondly why there is no damage on the upper portion of the Traveler which would have been the case if some external force like the Darkness was attacking it). In light of all this - what evidence do you have that not only argues against this theory in a convincing way, but in fact confirms it as non-canon? And don't forget the anonymous play tester early on during release that confirmed that the Traveler WAS the Darkness in an earlier version of the game - very close to release - before Bungie gutted the story. If anything, to simply stretch out this reveal slowly over many years. Which also explains the poor state of the story at release. In fact, any theories other than the Traveler being highly involved with the Darkness, or one and the same in fact, has a huge amount of work to counter each and every one of these factors.

            •
"You don't have one." The Hunter came to a halt in front of the throne, raised her covered face to meet the Prince's gaze. "No," she agreed. "My next death will be my last." "I know the feeling," the Prince said dryly. The Queen kept her expression carefully distant. She sat reclined in her throne, legs crossed, surveying the two figures at the base of the steps. Beside her, where the Wolves' Guard used to stand, Techeuns Shuro and Sedia hovered instead, their jewel-like augments gently humming. To her right and just before stood the Prince, facing forward but his body half-turned back toward her. "Your Grace," said the man before her at the foot of the stairs. His voice was soft but strong. When he spoke the Hunter started to turn her head toward him, then flinched as if someone had shone a bright light into her eyes. "Thank you for your gracious welcome," he said. The Queen inclined her head slightly. "Before we begin," spoke out the Hunter. "I will say this." She paused, her head tilted up to the throne. The Queen waved her hand in assent. The Hunter's pale lips tightened slightly, then resumed their usual stony mien. "Your Grace," she said. Shuro and Sedia shifted, a sudden rustling and whispering. The Queen raised one finger to silence them. Uldren's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. "I am not here for you." The Queen stared at the Hunter, her expression studiously unchanged. "I have no wish to play politics. I have no grievance with the City, not anymore. I have no grand hopes to end the war, for long have I known I will not see its end. I am here for one battle, and one alone, because it is a battle we must all fight, together or separately. So I will warn the defenders, together or separately. I will do anything—" her low voice shook with passion— "to end Oryx." A silence rang out in the room. The Hunter kept her head raised, her ambiguous gaze directed at the shadows in the throne where the Queen reclined. Then a small smile curved the Queen's lips. "Well said." She straightened, and leaned slightly forward so the room's light fell on her face. "So let us end him."
• Also, if you're up for the challenge I have another lead on their stuff. There are a few grimoire cards mentioning alpha lupi, either "from the dreams of alpha lupi" or something similar. The only way any of it makes sense is if alpha lupi is the traveller and IT is the darkness. If I remember correctly they talk about how IT can't be defeated but he may have found a way to wound IT. One of them also talks about some kind of equilibrium? If you can piece it all together I think it could be the key to deciphering the story.

This post is great, there is just one tiny thing i think is wrong. In the grimore that mensions Skolas being freed xûr is never mentioned. I know the way it describes the liberator sounds like xûr, but i think that is because there is more than one agent. Xûr is AN agent of the nine, not THE agent of the nine. And because he can do only what the nine want him to and he is created from other dead beings, the nine more than likely create the other agents the same way as xûr so i believe there are more agents extremely similar to him

                  • My personal theory is that the Traveler is being pursued by something it cannot defeat itself. It travels from system to system uplifting different species to fight "the darkness," but so far each species has failed, including the Fallen. Now, here's where things get interesting. Either the Traveler saw some hope and promise in humans and decided to fight to it's last to defend us... OR something forced it to stay (maybe Rasputin?).

Only hole I found at first glance is the Battle of Twilight Gap. You seem to imply that it was long ago, but it was really quite recent. How do we know this? The Queen intervened in the battle. She is no Guardian, no immortal. The Awoken in general aren't. Also, just want to mention that after Skolas is captured, he tells Variks about the "Darkness Binder. Light Snuffer." This obviously refers to Oryx. It very likely means he saw the arrival of Oryx while in the future. Very good oversight of the story.

                      • It's true that the more ether a fallen consumes, the bigger they grow. During the exotic bounty for the Fallen Weapons, a quote from Variks is listed. It is something concerning the consumption of ether (either while waiting for him to summon you or when you need to kill bosses in the PoE), along the lines of "Kells(or Captains) with long sips stay strong, Dregs with short sips stay small." Sorry I don't remember the wording, finished the bounty this morning.
