The solution to "no matchmaking"
Unlike other raids, trials has a vendor that's easily accessible... why not just designate that area as a place to find a fireteam? You don't have any friends that play? Than hang out with Brother Vance. If everyone realizes that's a good place to find people who wanna do trials, they don't need to build in matchmaking. I mean really. .. would you WANT RANDOMS with you on that intense of a gametype? I know teams would love to be against a team of RANDOMS.. easy wins!

I wish bungie would add a vendor that would sell placards we could hold. Make it so you had a selection (don't let players write their own or it'd get bad). Stuff like LFG or #masterrace stuff. Then people LFG could stand holding a placard saying what they're LFG for in tower or reef.
