networking fix for multiplayer

people with bad or slow INTERNET or people who experience lag i am sorry but this issue is a personal one (for the most part) that can be addressed if you use a wired connection and other tools i will talk about here, I've dabbled in making my connection better for year since the whole blops 2 ordeal and even a little before that. I can definitively say with destiny and other online games there has been an issue with connection stability, dedicated servers help but since destiny doesn't seem to have these for now, here is how to get the most out of your INTERNET speed. 1) use a non proprietary modem or modem router combo - the main reason is this actually is a way for companies to control your bandwidth usage without your knowledge since you have so little control over the type of devices they give you, it also saves you a lot of money! - fix for this is simple get a modem or modem router combo of your own, many INTERNET businesses might tell you your not "allowed" to have a different device for their service.... this is a lie to sell you more junk,(one thing to keep in mind is to set up your modem by calling the company you are purchasing INTERNET for to set it up on their end) 2) wired connections work the best and the best Ethernet cables around for streamline connectivity are fiber optic (which unless your rich forget about it), cat-5e and cat-6. - when it comes to cost cat-5e is affordable and a little slower than cat-6 but lacks some of the things cat-6 provides, cat-6 it the current standard and can be a little pricey but the speed is well worth it, the difference in price mainly comes from the foil insulators on the inside of the cable itself to prevent internal wire damage, as well as the speed and sometimes snag less covers 3) some people like to port forward, which to me is a nice thing but opening most of those ports shows minor improvements over the ever changing ports a game can have with all of its different servers, a good thing to check to combat connection issues is your NAT type. - to fix your NAT type lets begin with a simple fix but hard for people who don't know how to change information in their router without locking themselves out of it. Enable UPnP! this is essential mainly because the ports open themselves for your specific devices! - now before any PC fanatics come attack me here is a disclaimer for UPNP it can allow mal-ware to enter your computer but hear me out mal-ware can get into your computer just as easily without it being open so be sure you have a GOOD anti virus program and its up to date on all of its information Playstation nat types nat type 1 -open nat type 2 - moderate nat type 3 - strict (you need 1 for maximum efficiency) Xbox nat types open moderate strict (your gonna want an open nat type here too) i hope all this helps people as it does for me it wont fix everything but this fixes the issues with individual problems, all other lag is contained to either the game servers or other people. if you have something to add run it by me and I'll see what i can add.

    • Destiny is the only game that lags this consistently for me. It's not my internet or equipment. Bungie needs to do some server maintenence and fix their end of things. The lag is bad for so many people. It's definitely the servers.

Nat type 2 is also Open NAT Type 1 is directly wire connected between console and modem. No other devices can share the internet connection. Type 2 is connected through a router or gateway (wired or wireless). Other devices share the internet connection, and traffic is routed to the proper device using NAT (Network Address Translation). Type 3 can be Moderate or Strict. A port or ports used to send data is being blocked by a firewall, your ISP, or is being utilized by another application. You dont want a Moderate or Strict NAT for gaming. Playstation doesnt list your NAT as open, etc, it shows your NAT type 1, 2, or 3. Gaming applications will list your NAT as Open, Moderate, or Strict. I always get Open NAT with NAT type 2. Most people (99%) dont understand how to set up their home network to optimize it for online gaming. Most will still get Open NAT without doing anything, BUT, they may still be lagging for many other reasons that are beyond them. They are not actively "lag switching", just because you see they have a red bar. They are just going about their buisiness, perhaps not realizing they need to clear their routers cache, or unaware little Timmy in the next room is streaming video. The most common cause of an unstable connection is connecting through WIFI. This could appear to be lag switching. It's not. Peopple who use the term "lag switcher", etc, are simply demonstrating their ignorance, and are likely part of the problem we all face in online gaming regarding latency, aka "lag"

If a person has crappy internet service (high ping) it doesn't matter if they have a nat type 1 or 2. They're still gonna lag. Even with upnp enabled they will still lag. There is no way to tell what nat type another person has just by watching their movements on screen. If they're rubber banding and such they have high ping or packet loss going on. I agree with some of your suggestions but most people use their own or an ISP provided modem and router setup. That would immediately give them a nat type 2 or SOMETIMES type 3 without some fancy router configurations that the average person either doesn't want to or doesn't know how to change. Which means type 2 would is the most common nat type you're going to come across and works fine for gaming. The only nat type that will give you real problems would be type 3. ISP provided modem/router combo's can give you a nat type 3 regardless of DMZ'ing or port forwarding or UPNP. If that happens the only thing you can do is to 'bridge' the ISP combo setup. Or as you suggested, buy your own decent quality stuff. It's a good post but maybe you should give examples of how to get a type 1 or 2 connection. That would help people understand it more clearly.

            • Thing is.. and i understand all of what you have said. why should _we_ 'fix' our end.. This isn't the first ever online game why doesn't the game's creator come up with a solution?

Cat5e and Cat6 have the same throughput of 1gb/s. Also, a permanent fix for nat type issues it to transition to ipv6. You can also bridge your connection through a pc to solve nat type issues.

                • Cat6 is pointless outside an enterprise environment (excepting major networking enthusiasts) and needlessly expensive Type 2 NAT is fine, 1 is way too open. Having a good A/V program is no excuse for being stupid/reckless

                        • Nice explanation and write up. Part of the problem is alot of players are inducing lag on purpose to get an advantage.

                            • Activision shells out some leftovers from their money pile to spend on dedicated servers. How's that for a fix? There is no excuse whatsoever for not having them in AAA game with insane budget. Well apart from greed I guess... I just answered myself.
