Edit 1: We're trending! Thanks for helping the post get some recognition guys, keep bumping so bungie definitely take notice Edit 2: Wow! Made it to highest rated! Thanks again to everyone who bumped and liked the idea! I would love to see your ideas, post ideas in the comments for faction ideas, vendor ideas, mini-games, games to bet on or whatever comes to mind, I would love to see what you think. Edit 3: Would love to expand on the ideas of pets and the flashback missions, post your ideas below and I may feature them in the post! Remember to include the character we'll play as, enemies we will fight against, what we'll learn and the parts of the mission. Also include ideas for pets, and how they could be implemented, whether they could fight with us or whether this would hinder the idea of fighting with your fire team (because admittedly, who would fight with other guardians when they could have a tiger watching their back). Edit 4:So when trying to add in ideas from the comments, I hit the character limit, so I'm going to write some new posts possibly going into depth about the ideas, adding in ideas from the comments and some specific ideas of my own. I will link them in this post, so you can easily see the awesome ideas people come up with ;) There have been a few posts I've seen around the forums asking for the areas in 'The Last City' to be opened up to us, and I've had some ideas of my own. Bearing in mind that many of these are very significant changes, that I would expect to need one to two years of development to implement, I'm only hoping to get this on bungie's radar as something which many players would like for later editions of the franchise. Since this will be a pretty long post, I'll include a TL/DR here, but I recommend reading the whole topic... TL/DR (too long didn't read)
A new social space similar to the tower, as a kind of small open world area with vendors and NPC's. Hopefully we can visit areas instrumental in the lore of the game such as twilight gap, and have something to help immerse us into the world, and have features such as casinos, shops, protecting the wall and special cutscenes.
The City I believe that the city should be like an open world, no less dense but a bit smaller. We should see houses, NPC's of different ages and races, shops, casinos, restaurants, street performers sweeper bots and libraries. Each does not have to bring something huge, but things such an NPC talking of the bravery of guardians who faced Crota could bring some of the depth that this game is currently lacking. The city should show signs of a shattered civilization, with kind of districts depending on wealth and landmarks covered in vegetation or rust. There could be rings for the districts, with the poor being outside near the wall, and the very rich living close to the tower, with the middle/upper classes living in between. Crime rates would be higher in poor districts, but black markets could provide valuable items f0r low prices. The rich districts would contain expensive but fairly valuable items and still be very safe, whereas most items would be bought from the middle areas (other than if you want to spend all 25k glimmer on one item in the rich are). Many players are asking for a form of betting system and Casinos could be the solution. Being a player who has looked forward to destiny since far before it's release, I get a sense of nostalgia whenever I look back at concept images of the last city now, and I don't want to look back at them in 1-2 years time and say, I never got to see that... Hopefully if this is included Bungie will find a way to show the pride of the Golden Age as well as the impact that the collapse had on the city. Features I admit that some of these are far fetched and could be topics of there own, but some features that the city could have could add so much to the game. For Example, Casinos Betting could be for ascendant/radiant mats, motes of light, strange coins and exotic shards, using the currency transfer values coming with the speaker in House of Wolves and one strange coin equal to a mote of light. Materials are traded in for chips and players could play whatever games that are included. 1 chip=1shard/energy etc. Casinos would depend on the area, with the rich districts having high stakes and huge, eye-catching casinos whereas the poorest district's casino would be just a small group sitting around a table with no minimum bet. Shops Basically vendors taken to the next level, buying something from a shop in rich districts would be walking through the showrooms and selecting rugs and chairs for your base, and pressing the button you use to inspect a guardian in the tower when you see something you like. Then you would be shown the price and you would choose to buy it. In poorer districts this experience would be much more like vendors in the tower, where you have market stalls showing off what little you can buy, but to buy it you must speak with the vendor. Here is my post expanding on this idea and including some related ideas from the community: Visiting 'The Last City':Shops The Wall This would be a place you could visit to help secure the proximity around the city for civilians favour (rep system, see bottom) as well as vanguard reputation and marks. It would consist of making your way through the dark, twisted tunnels of the wall, taking out fallen as you go along and also watching out for the laser mines from the very first mission. This would return you to the very first scene of the game, and your job is to clear out strong, varying fallen patrols. You could also make it to the top of the wall, where you could enter machine gun turrets to mow down enemies in or rail gun turrets for longer ranges. Rewards could be special emblems depicting the wall, as well as shaders. Special Areas Exploration should be the biggest reason to visit the city, and special areas highlighted in the grimoire should be easily distinguishable from normal areas and unique. Flashback missions could be triggered from these areas, special cutscenes and even collectibles could be found here. For example, finding the remains of Lord Radegast's tower (one of the nine iron lords) and deploying your ghost somewhere could trigger a cutscene where you learn what happened in the fall of the iron lords and see how the towers were destroyed from the personal perspective of each of the Iron Lords by finding there respective towers. There are so many aspects of the lore that could be explored in this way, e.g., /// location where you learn each of these=(@_____) ~How did Dredgen Yor become corrupted, How powerful was he? How did Shin Malphur kill him? (@Dwindler's Ridge) ~Who was Toland, The Shattered, did he really die?, why was he exiled? (Toland's journal, @His hive-themed Base) ~Who was Jaren Ward? Did he create the last word, what happened to him? (Shin Malphur's Diary, @Black Market) ~What was Saint 14's role in the Battle of Twilight Gap? What made him powerful? (@Twilight Gap) New Flashback missions where YOU are these characters, Toland facing hordes of Hive, Dredgen Yor corrupting his mind and weapon, Saint 14 protecting the city, the war between the Iron Lords and Shin Malphur seeking retribution. This is just to show the potential that the city could have, and there are probably many more characters that could be brought in. You could also be rewarded with ghost shells, ships, new shaders and emblems, as well as possibly an exclusive weapon for finding and completing all of the Iron Lord Tower missions (each of the 9 iron lords had their own tower). Player Bases This has been on my wish list for a long time, as I feel as a private hangout could be extremely fun to customise and to go to between raids or game sessions. Imagine decorating your house with arcade machines with minigames, Praetorian Heads, hive boomers or fallen house banners awarded for completing raids a certain amount of times, flawlessly or with under three players? Imagine finally getting Gjallarhorn and putting it up in a glass cabinet for others to stare in envy at. These bases could be extended for hefty prices of glimmer and motes of light, and furniture could be bought from new vendors around the city. To not crowd up the game, make the base editor on bungie.net and give players yet another reason to visit it. Different districts of the city may also cost more to buy a base of apartment in. Huge mansions for veterans and smaller bases for newer players. You would have to have some raid completions and trophies to be accepted into some of the higher class districts also. Little Touches ---> Tip street performers in glimmer ---> NPC's have unique/interesting things to say ---> Animals such as Dogs, Cats and domesticated space tigers (seen in the concept picture for destiny below):
http://gamingbolt.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Destiny-Concept-Art-15.jpg
(Maybe pets!) ---> Easter eggs from past bungie games ---> Option to break up fights between civilians ---> Simple reputation system called something like "Civilian Favour" which could increase as you break up fights in the city, put out fires, do random tasks of kindness such as tipping street performers and protecting the wall. This would cause civilians to be even nicer to you around the city and up to a 15% decrease in glimmer needed in item costs across the city.

• Should be a huge mission were you end up rescuing a whole colony of civilians trapped underground. These civilians maybe survived by making an alliance with the cabal who were also reluctant but they were also cut off from their own kind and hive and vex run rampant in the area so there was little choice. You also find several corrupted ghosts in the area who have made dark guardians a new weapon of the dark ess

                              • I like this idea a lot. The only thing is that the tower is on the outer edge of the city. The wealthiest people would probably live and work under the traveler, in the city's center. Aside from that, I think everything you said is a great idea!

                                    • Some really great ideas especially with flashback stuff. I have often looked out at the walls around the city from the tower and wondered what it would be like to defend them along side hundreds of other gaurdians. Maybe it would work like public events, strike missions and open world pve depending what area your entering. That alone would be like a whole new world that you could enter simply from walking around the city without having to separate it by going to orbit.

                                      • Many of these ideas sound great and I'm all for it. And I always love the anticipation and excitement of expansions. But these ideas sound like a whole other game. Deus Ex Human Revolution comes to mind when reading this. So I have the feeling these game styles are worlds apart. Any how fingers crossed that even just one of these ideas makes it to our consoles.
