On Raid Matchmaking: How to do it right (Discussion)

Bungie has claimed before that Raid matchmaking is something they're not planning on bringing to the game anytime soon. They claim that raids are all about people getting together and organized. However, we all know that some people are not as open minded about picking just any guardian for their fireteam. And they have every right to think like that!! It's been said too that if enough people request something, Bungie might consider it. So here we go. We've got matchmaking for Strikes and Weekly. With Weekly, Bungie went wrong about it. Some people like to solo Weekly; they like the challenge and they like to run it at their own pace. Whatever their reason is, that option was denied from them the minute Weekly was given matchmaking. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the people that benefit from matchmaking. But it's not fair to also exclude those who like to do things solo. Bungie completely neglected those fans and we all know how many people complained about it. And rightfully so. So if we're gonna introduce Raid matchmaking, Bungie would need to learn from their mistakes (which they're pretty good at, apparently) and do it right this time. So let's assume that this is a feature that's already in the game. It would have to work like this: •As you choose whatever raid you're doing, a small window (or whatever) should pop up asking you if you'd like to do a Private Fireteam or Public Fireteam. Then you choose whatever fits you. -Private Matchmaking: This is what we already have right now. You click on Private and you go to that destination. Simple. You have to handpick your team; recruit them from forums or get your friends, etc. If you didn't invite anyone to your fireteam then you're soloing it. Again, this is exactly what we've got right now. •No one can join your team at any point •People need an invitation to join you •You set up your own rules: you want to have a fireteam full of Gallys and HoC, go ahead! •If you want to switch to Public, you'll need to go to Orbit and choose Public and go back to your checkpoint. Public Matchmaking: This is what we've got with Strikes and Weekly. You'll get randomly matched with people with similar levels who are also looking to raid. •You know what you're getting into; you might be matched with raid newbies or douchebags. Hell, they might only be there for half an hour. •If someone drops from the team, the game automatically attempts to replace that person, just like Strikes and Weekly. •The game automatically awards you with whatever checkpoint you're dropped into. Yes, even Gorgon checkpoint. Not too different from people recruiting people to award the Gorgon checkpoint like they do now. •If you'd like to switch to Private, you need to go to Orbit and choose Private. Then relaunch the raid and return to your checkpoint. This feature will be incredibly helpful for those who don't have a wide network of friends ready to raid with or who might want to get good at raiding. There's pros and cons for both features but I believe a middle ground can be achieved. One feature shouldn't affect another one. At this point, it would be a matter of introducing two features that are already a part of the game and making them work appropriately for Raids, not against each other or choosing one over the other. All guardians will be happy. However, by introducing Public Matchmaking, people like me would be able to just join a less strict fireteam and jump into the action. I know what some people might say: isn't that cheating? A raid newb joining a random fireteam at Atheon checkpoint? What if he gets a cool item?!! Well, the answer is no, it's not cheating. However, it's something that we should all be familiar with already. We get that in Weekly and Strikes already. Fair? No, but that the way the game is. And if you're not ok with that, then that's awesome! That's why we should keep Private Matchmaking also!! Not one or the other, but both. Please leave your ideas and comments below. Keep in mind that this is meant to help EVERYBODY and again, this is not a petition to have one or the other. This is a request to have both Private matchmaking and Public matchmaking . It is not meant to affect others; were just trying to introduce an additional feature to the game, a feature we already have. Thanks in advance! --------------------------------------------------- Edit no. 1: Thanks for all the great feedback! It seems like the majority agree with this idea. Again, please keep in mind that this idea is meant to keep all players happy; those who are already good at the game and like to handpick their team (Private MM) and those who are laid back and a bit inexperienced but would like to give raid a shot (Public). We need both features to coexist, not to take one and replace it with the other like Weekly did. --------------------------------------------------- Edit no. 2: It seems I forgot to mention LFG and the app and whatnot. Personally, I do use those tools but the issues are that its a third party site (so you have to do go outside the game to find people IN the game...?) and some people might not want to spend that extra time looking for a fireteam that suits them or a team that accepts them. That's fair. I suppose Public wouldn't be aimed towards those hardcore Raiders. That's why we want to keep both private and public at the same time. Two features that Destiny already has but bring them into raids. Keep everyone happy. --------------------------------------------------- Edit no. 3: Here are some other threads regarding matchmaking with similar ideas. Check them out and give them your support too if you agree! https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/102878440/0/0 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/87786338/0/0 Have a similar thread? Let me know and I'll try to post it here too. Doesn't matter how we raise awareness as long as Bungie hears us out. ---------------------------------------------------
